SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Southwest Legacy High School: A STEM Focus High School of the Future

Recently, I visited our near-completion newest facility: Southwest Legacy High School. As I walked the corridor of that beautiful building I felt a mixture of pride, anticipation and joy. I was struck with a distinct sensation that I was not alone. I paused and visualized for a moment about the pioneers who farmed and ranched this area for over three hundred years. I thought about the founding members of Southwest ISD along with the first graduating class of eleven seniors from Southwest High School who graduated in 1952. I reflected upon the hundreds of former teachers, administrators, and community members who for over 64 years have been the backbone of our great local education system. I visualized our Board of Trustees welcoming our future ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students who will enter these great SW Legacy HS corridors next August of 2017. I walked the building for over an hour in silence, except for the occasional echoing sounds of workmen completing finishing touches, and imagined the importance for each of us knowing the history, each of us being a part of the legacy and each of us being aware that this new campus will be the pathway to the future for our SW youth. I imagined future SW Legacy HS students standing up to bullying as members of the AHA-B (Anti-Harassment, Anti-Bullying) group. As I entered the Career and Technical Education area I could see future students working on STEM projects such as Cyber-patriot, building a Hydrogen Fuel Cell car, preparing culinary masterpieces, and earning workforce certificates in auto-tech, auto-collision, welding and advanced manufacturing, just to name a few. I could see the tremendous pathway to high demand occupations and postsecondary experiences. I saw a place in the building, perfect for showcasing student projects such as the electric car that the SWET (Southwest Engineering Team) displayed at the White House. With each following step, I thought about how our academic performance continues to rise with many success indicators meeting and exceeding state standards. I thought of our National Merit Scholars and our National Hispanic Scholars. I saw students, designing and twisting wrenches as part of comprehensive teams, concerned with the drag and resistance factors of their experimental vehicles. Waiting at the end of the hall, I saw the new Principal of Southwest Legacy High School, Ms. Anita Chavera, prepared and ready to begin the inaugural year of this great high school! Southwest Legacy High School will welcome parents and community members on tours after the holidays and move towards a full opening of the campus early fall of 2017. Please plan to join us sometime this spring to visit and tour our new sister, Southwest Legacy High School. Let’s hold dear the legacy of our past while we open the door to the future for our students - together. We will send out special invitations during the spring of 2017.

Watching construction crews put the finishing touches on Southwest Legacy High School (SWLHS) is sparking excitement throughout the SWISD community. SWLHS is the second high school within the district and the first built from the ground up in 40 years south of Highway 90. SWISD has grown by 500 students annually over the last 5 years. SWLHS will address those enrollment enhancements. The structure is 369,700 square feet with a core capacity to hold 3,000 students. The new campus will also be home to the district's STEM Academy, focusing on the studies of science, technology, engineering and math, creating opportunities students would not have in a one flagship large high school. Here’s an inside look at SWLHS.

2ND-GRADE STUDENTS “LEARN TO SWIM” Palo Alto College partnered with Southwest ISD to provide free swim lessons to approximately 1,200 secondgrade students during the 2016-17 academic year. During the two-week “Learn to Swim” program, participating second-grade students progress through 10 swim-training stations during 45-minute sessions. “Swim lessons are not something every family can afford, but it’s a skill we hope every child can acquire. We strive to provide the best educational experiences to our students and value our partnership with Palo Alto College,” said Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft, Superintendent of Southwest ISD.

“We have a common goal and that is the opportunity for all learners to be confident, resilient, and successful global citizens.”

FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT SELECTED AS TRICENTENNIAL PARTNER The city of San Antonio will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2018, and Southwest ISD will be a part of the excitement. In September, the SWISD Fine Arts Department was announced as one of 44 community partners. SWISD is the only school district partnering with the Tricentennial that will take place throughout a 12-month calendar year in 2018. “The Southwest ISD Fine Arts Department is honored and excited to be selected as a Tricentennial Partner with the City of San Antonio,” said Richard Flores, Southwest ISD Fine Arts Director.

AP & NATIONAL MERIT STUDENTS RECOGNIZED Eight Southwest HS students were honored during Homecoming halftime for their amazing achievements in academics. AP scholar is granted to students who demonstrate outstanding college-level achievement and receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. AP Scholar with Honor is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams. Students recognized as National Hispanic Recognition Scholars are among the top 5,000 students of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who took the PSAT last October. Students recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars scored among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students nationwide who took the PSAT test in October 2015. SOUTHWEST HS STUDENT ADVANCES TO NATIONAL COMPETITION Corey Verstraeten’s restored 1971 Oliver 1855 Tractor has received a lot of attention this year. After the Southwest High School Junior put in more than 800 hours of work into restoring the big green tractor, it won Grand Champion at the 2016 State Fair of Texas and was selected as a finalist in the National 2016 Delo Tractor Restoration Competition. For winning Grand Champion at the State Fair, Corey received numerous prizes, including a new welder and a toolbox filled with tools. For his selection as a finalist in the Delo Competition, Corey and his teacher, Mr. Matthew Sullaway, traveled to Indianapolis for a week, where Corey presented his work to a group of judges and answered questions about his tractor. This is Corey’s third time to be selected as a finalist in the National Delo Competition, and to make the trip to Indianapolis. Mr. Sullaway said, "Corey’s already getting ready for next year’s competition, and he has high expectations."

4th grade student, Daniela Olivo has completed over 800 Think Through Math lessons since the start of the school year. That accomplishment gives her the number one spot not only in TTM completions on the Bob Hope Elementary campus and throughout SWISD, but also throughout the entire state of Texas. Not only is Daniela a successful math student in her Dual Language class, but she also has perfect attendance and is on the A & B Honor Roll. Her teacher, Irene Mauricio, said Daniela's mom will call her to tell her she’s out of lessons and ask her to upload more.

SWISD TOPS THE MATH CHARTS The three charts show the state, county, and Southwest ISD Math STAAR testing results for 3rd graders over the last four years. All three charts show an increase in 3rd grade Math STAAR performance, but SWISD shows a much steeper and faster increase. In 2015, 80 percent of our SWISD 3rd-grade students passed the STAAR Math, outperforming the state average of 77 percent and county average of 74 percent. (The orange line on the chart symbolizes economically disadvantaged students, which is a category that 83 percent of our students fall into. Despite that percentage, our district is leading the way in math performance.) These statistics are huge indicators for future success, and SWISD is proud to be at the top.

MCNAIR MS TEACHER RECEIVES KENS 5 EXCEL AWARD SWISD 2015-16 Teacher of the Year, Mr. Michael Maldonado, received the KENS 5 Excel Award in November. All McNair 8th grade students joined in the celebration at a pep rally held just for cybersecurity teacher, Mr. Maldonado. The pep rally featured performances by members of the McNair Band and Mariachis. SWISD Superintendent, Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft also shared some motivational thoughts before Deborah Knapp, with KENS 5, presented the award to Mr. Maldonado. He also received a $1,000 check from the San Antonio Credit Union to be used in his classroom.

AHA-B WINS SPURS TEAMUP CHALLENGE

RACHEL RAY DONATES TO SCOBEE MS When good samaritan Lester Brown bought all of Sabrina Drude’s school supplies while she was checking out at Wal-Mart back in September, the story made national headlines. The Scobee 7th-grade teacher, Mrs. Drude, made an appearance on the Rachel Ray show after they got word of the story. During her show appearance, the company Yoobi decided to donate a pack of school supplies to every Scobee student. Each student received a supplies pack filled with pencils, a sharpener, erasers, color pencils, crayons, markers, a ruler, glue, a folder, and a notebook. The donation will help provide the students with supplies needed in the classroom everyday.

Thanks to the generosity of the Spurs Silver & Black Give Back, SWISD won $10,157 to fund the AHA-B Student Sign Spinners spirit group, which will be made up of approximately 50 Middle School and High School students. Capitalizing on a growing trend in roadside guerrilla marketing, Southwest Student Sign Spinners will receive professional training and brightly colored, cleverly designed spinning signs that contain our AHA-B messages. A group of Steering Group Members applied for the Spurs TeamUp Challenge grant, which relies on a partnership with AArrow Sign Spinners, a nationally recognized marketing firm for training and sign production.

SUPERINTENDENT SUMMIT PREPARES STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE Southwest ISD hosted the Superintendent Scholar Summit to recognize the top 10 percent, along with ninth, tenth, and eleventh-grade students who are enrolled in Dual Credit courses. Alumni from both local Universities and Ivy League schools spoke with parents about the opportunities available to their students. Guest keynote speaker was Alex GarzaLopez, who is a Southwest HS alum and also graduated from Stanford University. DR. VERSTUYFT BECOMES SOUTH SA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE LEGEND SWISD Superintendent, Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft, was one of five people to become a 2016 South Chamber of Commerce Legend at the Legends Gala in October 2016. The Gala commemorates those who continually give their time and attention to the betterment of San Antonio’s southern sector. Dr. Verstuyft has served SWISD as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, executive director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. His successful tenure is evident in SWISD’s continued growth.

MAESTRO DE LA ESCUELA SECUNDARIA MCNAIR RECIBE EL PREMIO EXCEL DE KENS 5 El maestro del año 2015-2016 en SWISD, Sr. Michael Maldonado, recibió el Premio Excel de KENS 5 en noviembre. UNA ESTUDIANTE DE LA PRIMARIA BOB HOPE CLASIFICADA #1 EN TEXAS “Su diligencia inspira a los otros alumnos en su clase.”

Estudiante del cuarto grado Daniela Olivo ha completado más de 800 lecciones matemáticas (Think Through Math, TTM) desde el principio del año. Ese logro le da el lugar número uno no solamente en la primaria Bob Hope y en SWISD, pero también a través del estado entero de Texas. Daniela es una estudiante exitosa de matemática en su clase de lenguas dobles, tiene la asistencia perfecta y está en el cuadro de honor A/B. Su maestra Irene Mauricio dice que la madre de Daniela la llama cuando le faltan más lecciones y pide que suba más.

LOS ESTUDIANTES DE SWISD SUPERARON EN LAS MATEMÁTICAS Estas tres gráficas demuestran los resultados de la evaluación matemática STAAR del estado, condado y SWISD por los últimos cuatro años de los estudiantes del tercer grado. Las tres gráficas indican un aumento del desempeño en matemáticas STAAR del tercer grado, pero SWISD demuestra un aumento más destacado y más rápido. En 2015, 80% de nuestros estudiantes del tercer grado aprobaron las matemáticas STAAR, sobrepasando el promedio estatal de 77%, y el promedio del condado de 74%. SE RECONOCEN LOS ESTUDIANTES DE AP Y MÉRITO NACIONAL Durante el entretiempo del partido de la reunión de ex alumnos, ocho estudiantes recibieron honor por sus logros sobresalientes en academia. Se ofrece el Becado de AP a los estudiantes que demuestran logros sobresalientes del nivel universitario y que sacan un puntaje de 3 o más en tres o más exámenes de AP. Se ofrece el Becado de AP con Honor a los estudiantes que sacan un puntaje mínimo de 3.25 en todos los exámenes tomados de AP, y se ofrece el Becado de AP con Distinción a los que sacan un puntaje de 3 o más en cuatro o más exámenes de AP. ESTUDIANTE DE LA ESCUELA SECUNDARIA DE SOUTHWEST LLEGA A LA COMPETICIÓN NACIONAL El tractor 1971 Oliver 1855 restaurado por Corey Verstraeten ha recibido mucha atención este año. Después de lograr más de 800 horas restaurando el gran tractor verde, el junior de la escuela preparatoria Southwest ganó la Gran Campeón en la Feria Estatal de Texas, y fue escogido para participar en la 2016 Competición Nacional de Restauración de Tractores Delo. Por habar ganado el Gran Campeón, Corey recibió varios premios incluyendo un soldador nuevo y una caja de herramientas llena de herramientas. Por ser finalista, Corey y su maestro Señor Matthew Sullaway viajaron a Indianapolis por una semana donde Corey presentó su tractor a los jueces y contestó preguntas sobre ello. Es la tercera vez que Corey fue reconocido como finalista en esta competición y tomó el viaje a Indianapolis. Sr. Sullaway dijo que Corey ya está planeando para la próxima competición y tiene altas esperanzas.

ESTUDIANTES DEL SEGUNDO GRADO “APRENDA A NADAR” Colegio Palo Alto colaboró con Southwest ISD para proveer lecciones gratis en natación a aproximadamente 1,200 estudiantes del segundo grado durante el año académico 2016-2017. Durante las dos semanas del programa “Aprenda a Nadar,” los estudiantes avanzaron por 10 estaciones de prácticas de natación en sesiones que duraron 45 minutos. “Lecciones de natación no son de un precio accesible a cada familia, pero es una habilidad que esperamos que cada niño aprenda. Tratamos de proveer las mejores experiencias educacionales a nuestros estudiantes y estimamos nuestra colaboración con Colegio Palo Alto,” dijo Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft, Superintendente de Southwest ISD.

EL DEPARTAMENTO DE BELLAS ARTES SELECCIONADO COMO SOCIO DEL TRICENTENARIO La ciudad de San Antonio celebrará su aniversario de 300 años en 2018, y el Southwest ISD será parte del entusiasmo. En septiembre, el Departamento de Bellas Artes fue proclamado como uno de los 44 socios comunitarios. SWISD es el único distrito escolar colaborando con el Tricentenario que se llevará a cabo durante el año calendario de 2018. “El Departamento de Bellas Artes de Southwest ISD se siente honrado y emocionado de recibir la selección como socio Tricentenario con la ciudad de San Antonio,” dijo Richard Flores, director del Departamento de Bellas Artes del Southwest ISD. Al mirar los trabajadores completar el trabajo de la Escuela Preparatoria Legacy (SWLHS), el entusiasmo creció a través de la comunidad de SWISD. SWLHS es solamente la secunda escuela secundaria dentro del distrito, y la primera para ser construida desde el suelo en los últimos 40 años al sur de carretera 90. SWISD ha crecido por 500 estudiantes cada año por los últimos 5 años. SWLHS aborda este aumento en matriculación. La estructura es 369,700 pies cuadrados, con la capacidad de contener 3,000 estudiantes. El nuevo campus será el centro de la Academia STEM del distrito, que enfoca en ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemática, así creando oportunidades que los estudiantes les faltan en una sola escuela principal enorme. MENSAJE DEL SUPERINTENDENTE

La Escuela Preparatoria Legacy de Southwest: Una escuela del futuro enfocada en STEM. Recientemente visité nuestra facilidad más nueva y casi terminada, la Preparatoria Legacy de Southwest. Al caminar por los pasillos de este bello edificio, sentí una mezcla de orgullo, anticipación y gozo. Sentí la impresión singular de que no estaba solo. Me detuve para imaginar a los pioneros que cultivaron y criaron esta área por más de trescientos años. Pensaba de los fundadores del Southwest ISD y la primera clase de la Preparatoria Southwest para graduarse en 1952 con once estudiantes. Pensé en los cientos de maestros, administradores y miembros comunitarios que por más de 64 años forjaron los cimientos de nuestro gran sistema local de educación. Me imaginé a nuestra mesa directiva del consejo dando la bienvenida a los estudiantes futuros de los grados noveno, décimo y undécimo que van a pasar por estos grandes pasillos de Legacy HS el próximo agosto 2017. Caminé a través del edificio en silencio por más de una hora, excepto al oír el sonido de trabajadores poniendo los últimos retoques, y pensaba en lo importante que es para cada uno de nosotros el conocer la historia, ser parte del legado y estar conscientes de que esta nuevo recinto escolar marcará un sendero hacia el futuro para nuestros jóvenes en el Distrito Escolar Independiente Southwest. Me imaginé a los futuros estudiantes de la Preparatoria Legacy como miembros del grupo Anti-Acoso, Anti-Intimidación (AHA-B) enfrentando a los abusadores. Al entrar a la sección de Educación Carrera y Tecnológica, podía ver a los estudiantes futuros trabajando en varios proyectos STEM como patriota de ciber, construyendo un automóvil con pila de hidrógeno combustible, preparando obras culinarias, y ganado certificados en auto-tecnología y auto-colisión, soldadura y manufactura avanzada, entre muchos más. Podía ver el camino tremendo disponible para ocupaciones de alta demanda y experiencias terciarias. Vi un lugar en el edificio perfecto para exhibir los proyectos estudiantiles, como el automóvil eléctrico que SWET (el Equipo de Ingenieros de Southwest) demostró en la Casa Blanca. Con cada paso, pensaba como nuestro desempeño académico sigue levantándose con indicadores exitosos que alcanzan y sobrepasan los estándares estatales. Pensaba en nuestros National Merit Scholars y National Hispanic Scholars. Podía ver a los estudiantes, diseñando y torciendo llaves inglesas en equipos completos, preocupados con la resistencia de sus vehículos experimentales. Esperando al final del pasillo, vi la nueva directora de Preparatoria Legacy de Southwest, la Srta. Anita Chavera, preparada y lista para comenzar el primer año de esta gran escuela. La Preparatoria Legacy de Southwest dará la bienvenida a los padres y miembros de la comunidad con excursiones después de las fiestas navideñas, y esperamos abrir completamente al campus en el otoño de 2017. Por favor, haga planes para compartir con nosotros esta primavera y visitar a nuestra hermana nueva, la Preparatoria Legacy de Southwest.
