SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Dear SWISD Families, Welcome back to SWISD! This next school year promises to be one of our busiest and most successful. During the past four years, SWISD students and teachers have set new and the highest academic mark on the most rigorous state exams to date. The SWISD staff and students have been on an upward trajectory second to none. To say we are proud of their results in the classroom and on the stage, courts and fields is an understatement – we could not be prouder! This year we officially open the doors to our newest facility – Southwest Legacy High School. We will start the 2017-2018 school year at SW Legacy HS with 9th-11th graders and add our 12th graders the next year (2018-2019). Opening our second comprehensive high school in SWISD will afford many more opportunities for students, prepare us to embrace the future as we grow, and will essentially start new traditions. We are excited to bring the Titans along with our Dragons. As we embark on this new school year, please be on the lookout for our strategic plan and accompanying commitment to our community called “Every Child, Every Day.” Our strategic plan included over 2,500 survey responders, developers and designers to outline six important goals to work towards. The goals include Instruction, Social Emotional Environment, Communication, Academic Environment, Community Engagement and Professional Development. In our commitment that will be mailed to each SWISD household, we outline what our parents/guardians can expect from us, and we will be accountable to delivering attainment of our goals as measured in an annual District Health Card posted to our website at the end of each school year. In closing, I would like to congratulate our Board of Trustees for being selected as Region 20’s School Board of the Year. Our Board connects, supports, and inspires success in all they do. They serve with high expectations for each other, for me, and for all students. I am truly blessed to serve alongside seven modern-day heroes, who lead with dedication, integrity, and full hearts for SWISD’s students, parents, and community. We look forward to seeing everyone on the first day of school, August 28, 2017. We remain committed to ensuring pathways of success are available for all students and we pledge to keep our parents well informed along that trajectory. We are ready for a great year. We are excited to have our students back in school, and We ARE Southwest!

NEW FACES, NEW PLACES Anita Chavera, will lead our newest campus Southwest Legacy High School as principal.

SWISD FAMILIES ENGAGE IN STEM ACTIVITIES This summer, Southwest ISD provided a place where families in our community could come and work on STEM activities. They were able to program robots, code on the computers, build with Lego kits, and problem solve with science. “The kids had a great time in MakerSpace. The stations were fun, educational, and age appropriate. We hope to see it made available every summer,” said parent Wanita Kaupert. SWISD had nearly 45 families attend at least one session of MakerSpace.

AREA STUDENTS COMPETE IN CYBER CAMP

Through a partnership between the CyberTexas Foundation and Southwest ISD, students from across the area were able to participate in two one-week boot camps. The camps taught the students the concepts of network architecture and security, as well as securing computers with the Linux operating system. The culminating activity was the online competition, in which teams of four were given compromised networks and computers where they applied their skills to secure the machines and build a functional network in less than four hours. The top team in each camp received a Chromebook to use while practicing their new networking and Linux skills.

ACE RACE SPARKS FIRST OF ITS KIND COMPETITION

In an effort to promote and excite students about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs, Toyota Motors Manufacturing Texas partnered with Southwest ISD to create a one-of-a-kind event for several area school districts. The Inaugural Alamo City Electrathon (ACE) Race, which took place on May 19, was composed of an alternative engineering team of students from six participating school districts, with Southwest ISD being the exhibition team. Students from Edgewood, Somerset, Southside, South San, East Central, and Harlandale ISD built their single-passenger electric-powered cars using 73 lbs. of lead acid. Teams went through a series of inspections, including electrical, mechanical, driver and dynamic, to ensure their vehicles were safe to compete and race. Toyota Motors Manufacturing Texas supplied the seed money to help initiate and maintain this program they hope will become a National Sanctioned Electrathon Event with Electrathon America, one of approximately 12 in the nation.

EXCITEMENT BUILDS AS STUDENTS' PREPARE FOR SOUTHWEST LEGACY HIGH SCHOOL Nearly 2,000 students will start the 2017-18 school year walking the hallways of our newest campus, Southwest Legacy High School, Home of the Titans. Southwest Legacy will be the first high school built south of Highway 90 from the ground up in 40 years, and home to the district’s STEM academy. “It feels real good to be part of something brand new, the first, forever first,” said incoming junior, Fernando Martinez. Martinez will be part of the first graduating class of SWLHS. A dedication ceremony was held Thursday, August 10.

SWHS GRAD ATTENDS PRESTIGIOUS PERFORMING ARTS UNIVERSITY

Karina Gutierrez, a recent graduate of Southwest High School, is preparing for her first year at the New York University Tisch School of Acting. This prestigious university annually receives over 500 applicants and accepts approximately only 180 students from around the world. Though Gutierrez hopes to become an actress, she believes her journey to New York will open the door to many more opportunities. Many famous performers who have attended NYU include Lady Gaga, Kristen Bell, Adam Sandler, Alec Baldwin and Anne Hathaway. Dragon Drama and SWHS are both extremely proud of Karina's accomplishments and want to give her a shout out to "Break A Leg!" in New York.

This 2016-17 season, the Dragon Baseball team won their first ever Regional Quarter-Final Championship, the first in school history. They also extended the record amount of wins in a season. 6

SPECIAL EDUCATION HOLDS OLYMPIC FIESTA

On Saturday, April 22, over 150 Southwest ISD student athletes competed for gold at the annual Olympic Fiesta. The SWISD Olympic Fiesta combines a Special Olympic Track and Field Meet with the spirit of the Fiesta season. Students competed in multiple events including softball throw, running and standing long jump, turboJav, shot put, noodle throw, motorized and manual wheelchair races, 25M walk and assisted walking, 25M, 50M and 100M Dash, as well as several relay runs. Over 300 volunteers manned more than 60 booths which provided food, games, information and merchandise to purchase. This event allowed all community members to enjoy a Fiesta atmosphere and support SWISD.

AHA-B, A MOVEMENT TOWARDS KINDNESS

On Thursday, May 4, Southwest ISD held its first Anti-Harassment, Anti-Bullying Community Rally. Over 1,000 students, parents, staff, community members, and law enforcement officers came together to take a stand against bullying and harassment. The crowd heard from guest speakers Matt Molak, a strong advocate for David’s Law, SAPD Chief of Police William McManus, and the Public Information Officer for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. Students also participated in the event through an artwork display and the AHA-B sign Spinners.

HOLT CAT CONTINUES PAID INTERNSHIPS

HOLT CAT will continue its partnership with Southwest ISD to provide paid internships to SWISD students. The internship is part of the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program, in which students apply and interview for internship positions. This opportunity allows students to receive technical trade, business, and IT experiences at HOLT CAT, while earning high school credit for graduation. Eighteen SWHS students were the first group to participate in the program. Both juniors and seniors meeting the criteria will have the chance to apply for the program in November 2017.

NORTH PARK TOYOTA DONATES NEW CAR

For the eighth year in a row, North Park Toyota will award a brand new car to a SWISD senior who completes the 2017-18 school year with good attendance, grades, and behavior among other criteria. During the annual SWISD Senior Walk held on May 18, hundreds of parents, students and community members gathered to see who would win the 2016-2017 Toyota Yaris, a tradition North Park Toyota holds dear. “You guys just have such a passion for what you do, we’re just blessed to be part of this,” said Meryl Gothard, Owner of North Park Toyota. Out of the 30 students who were given the opportunity to win this past school year, it was Samantha Hernandez who had the winning key. $1.7 MILLION DONATION PROVIDES NEW CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY On May 22nd, the Toyota USA Foundation announced that they would be making a $1.7 million donation to SWISD to expand our STEM programs. The money will be used to pay for new technology to be put into classrooms to help prepare our students for high-tech jobs. TTMTX added to the Foundation’s contribution by donating robotic arms and a Spurs Toyota Tundra to be used by the Southwest Legacy High School Auto-Tech classes. 8

SWISD HOLDS 2ND SUPERINTENDENT SCHOLAR SUMMIT

Southwest ISD held its 2nd Superintendent Scholar Summit, where Southwest HS students who participated in the first event back in August were recognized. They were presented with a patch similar to those earned in varsity extra-curricular activities. The top 10 percent GPA students from all four middle schools, grades 6th - 8th, were also invited and presented with a certificate of Excellence for Outstanding Academic Achievement. It was a true celebration of academics, and congratulations to all of our students who were recognized.

STUDENTS EXCEL IN NATIONAL MATH CONTEST Students from Southwest ISD competed in the Imagine Learning Students Love Math Contest and out of 19 winners from across the country, eight of our SWISD students were selected. A certificate was sent to the teacher and student pairing that won from Imagine Learning and TTM. Overall math scores have been on the rise at SWISD. This school year 60% of our 1,000 eighth graders took algebra; with an overall pass rate of 90+ %.

LITERACY PROGRAM LAUNCHES ON CAMPUSES Southwest ISD is committed to improving your student’s reading ability through a new literacy program: Shine a light on your future. ELM CREEK PRINCIPAL FINALIST FOR H-E-B AWARD

Elm Creek Elementary Principal Luis Rojas was selected as a finalist for the H-E-B Excellence in Education awards for Principal of the Year. Rojas was one of eight finalists for the statewide award, and received $1,000 for himself and $2,500 for the ECE campus. Rojas was touched by the nomination and says after all these years he is still passionate about his work. Rojas has been in education for over 40 years.

SOCIAL WORKER WINS STATE AWARD

Congratulations to SWISD’s Nilda Castellanos for being chosen as the Texas Social Worker of the Year. Castellanos was honored at the Texas School Social Workers Conference in Austin. She has been a school social worker since 1993, but has 35 years total in social work experience.

SWISD POLICE OFFICER RECOGNIZED BY INTERNATIONAL AGENCY SWISD Police Officer Armando Hernandez was recognized at the 2017 ASIS International Law Enforcement Award Ceremony at Oak Hills Country Club. ASIS International annually recognizes law enforcement officers from all departments such as FBI, ATF, DEA, SAPD, Bexar County, independent school districts, municipalities and other law enforcement agencies.

EL PRINCIPAL DE ELM CREEK FUE SELECCIONADO COMO FINALISTA DEL PREMIO DE H-E-B El principal de Primaria Elm Creek Luis Rojas fue seleccionado como finalista en el premio H-E-B Excelencia en Educación para Principal del Año. Rojos fue uno de ocho finalistas para ganar el premio estatal, y recibió $1,000 para sí mismo y $2,500 para Elm Creek. Rojos estaba conmovido por la nominación y dice que después de tantos años, todavía queda apasionado por su trabajo. Rojas ha cumplido más de 40 años en la profesión de educación.

SEGUNDA CUMBRE DE SUPERINTENDENTES ESCOLARES SE LLEVÓ A CABO A SWISD

Southwest ISD se llevó a cabo su Segunda Cumbre de Superintendentes Escolares, donde se reconocieron los estudiantes preparatorios de Southwest que participaron en el primer evento el agosto pasado. Ellos recibieron una insignia semejante a las que son ganadas en actividades extraescolares. Los alumnos con el diez por ciento más alto GPA de cada cuatro escuelas medias (grado séptimo a octavo) también fueron invitados y recibieron un Certificado de Excelencia de Logros Académicos Sobresalientes. Era una celebración verdadera de la académica, y felicidades a todos los estudiantes reconocidos.

SWISD TIENE ÉXITO EN UNA COMPETICIÓN NACIONAL DE MATEMÁTICA Los estudiantes de Southwest ISD compitieron en Imagine Learning Students Love Math Contest y de 19 ganadores en todo el país, ocho de nuestros estudiantes fueron seleccionados. HOLT CAT CONTINÚA EL PROGRAMA INTERNADO PAGADO

HOLT CAT continuará su colaboración con Southwest ISD para proveer internados pagados a los estudiantes de SWISD. El internado es parte del Programa de Educación Profesional y Técnico (CTE), en que los estudiantes solicitan y reciben entrevistas para recibir posiciones de internado. Esta oportunidad permite que los estudiantes reciban experiencias técnicas, negociantes y tecnología de información en HOLT CAT, mientras ganan crédito para terminar el bachillerato. Dieciocho estudiantes de SWISD formaron el primer grupo para participar en el programa. Tanto juniors como seniors que completan el criterio tendrán la oportunidad de solicitar por el programa en noviembre de 2017.

NORTH PARK TOYOTA CONTINÚA SU DONACIÓN DE UN CARRO

FIESTA OLIMPIADA PARA EDUCACIÓN ESPECIAL

El sábado, el 22 de abril, más de 150 estudiantes atléticos compitieron para ganar oro en la Fiesta Olimpiada anual. La Fiesta Olimpiada de SWISD combina un evento Olimpiada Especial de Pista y Campo con el espíritu de Fiesta. Los estudiantes compitieron en varios eventos incluyendo tiro de softball, salto largo de correr y sin carrera, turbojavelina, tiro de la pesa, tiro de fideo, carreras de silla de ruedas a motor y a mano, caminata, y caminata asistida, de 25 metros, carreras de 25M, 50M y 100M, tanto como varias carreras de relevos. Más de 300 voluntarios atendieron a sus puestos que proveyeron comida, juegos, información y mercancía para comprar. Este evento permitió que todos los miembros de la comunidad se gozaran de un ambiente de Fiesta, y apoyar a SWISD.

AHA-B SE MUEVE HACIA LA BONDAD

El jueves, 4 de mayo, Southwest ISD llevó a cabo su primera reunión comunitaria de Anti-Acoso, AntiIntimidación (AHA-B). Más de 1,000 estudiantes, padres, personal, miembros de la comunidad, y agentes del orden público se congregaron en el Spring Sports Complex para tomar una posición fuerte contra acosadores e intimidación. La gente escuchó a los oradores invitados, Matt Molak, defensor de la Ley de David, SAPD Jefe de Policía William McManus y el Oficial de Información Pública del Sheriff del Condado de Bexar. Los estudiantes de SWISD también participaron en el evento por medio de una exposición de arte. Los rotadores de rótulos de AHA-B también ayudaron propagar el mensaje de bondad.

ALUMNOS ANTICIPAN UNA NUEVA ETAPA EMOCIONANTE EN SOUTHWEST PREPARATORIA LEGACY

Casi 2,000 alumnos comenzarán el año escolar 2017-18 caminando los pasillos de nuestro campus más nuevo, Southwest Preparatoria Legacy, Hogar de los Titanes. Southwest Preparatoria Legacy es la primera escuela preparatoria construida a partir de nada al sur de carretera 90 en 40 años, y es el cuartel de la academia STEM del distrito. “Se siente bien ser parte de algo totalmente nuevo, el primero, siendo siempre el primero,” dijo junior Fernando Martínez. Martínez será parte de la clase inaugural de terminar el bachillerato de SWLHS. Se llevó a cabo una ceremonia de dedicación el 10 de agosto.

Karina Gutiérrez, graduada reciente de la Preparatoria Southwest se prepara asistir a su primer año en la New York University Tisch School of Acting. Esta universidad prestigiosa recibe más de 500 solicitudes anualmente y acepta solamente algunos 180 estudiantes. Aunque Gutiérrez espera llegar a ser actriz, ella cree que su tiempo en Nueva York abrirá la puerta a más oportunidades. LA CARRERA ACE COMIENZA LA PRIMERA COMPETICIÓN DE SU CLASE

Para promover y animar a los estudiantes de los programas STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y matemáticas), Toyota Motors Manufacturing Texas colaboró con Southwest ISD para crear un evento singular para varios distritos escolares. La Primera Carrera Alamo City Electratón (ACE), que se llevó a cabo el 19 de mayo, consistió en un equipo de estudiantes ingenieros de seis distritos escolares, con Southwest ISD siendo el equipo de exhibición. Algunos estudiantes de Edgewood, Somerset, Southside, South San, East Central, y Harlandale ISD construyeron un coche eléctrico de solo pasajero usando 73 libras de plomo ácido. Los equipos pasaron por una serie de inspecciones, incluyendo eléctrica, mecánica, conductora y dinámica, para garantizar que sus vehículos estaban seguros para participar en la carrera. Toyota Motors Manufacturing Texas proveyó el dinero inicial para comenzar y mantener este programa que esperan que lleguen a ser un evento nacional con Electrathon America, uno de 12 en la nación.

Anitra Crisp, previamente vice presidente en la Escuela Media McNair, es ahora principal.

Roxie Freeman, previamente la vice principal de la Escuela Media Resnik, es ahora principal de la Escuela Primaria Hidden Cove.

Aracelie Bunsen ha sido nombrado la principal de Southwest Preparatoria.

Anita Chavera, estará encargada como principal del nuestro campus más nuevo, Southwest Preparatoria Legacy.

Joseph Guidry, previamente el principal en la Escuela Media McNair, es ahora el principal de la Escuela Media McAuliffe. Judy Foster, previamente vice presidente en la Escuela Primaria Southwest, es ahora principal.

LAS FAMILIAS DE SOUTHWEST ISD PARTICIPAN EN ACTIVIDADES DE STEM Este verano Southwest ISD proveyó un lugar donde familias en nuestra comunidad podían venir y trabajar en actividades de STEM. Podían programar robots, codificar computadoras, construir con Legos, y resolver problemas con ciencia. “Los niños se divirtieron grandemente en MarkerSpace. Las estaciones eran divertidas, educacionales y apropiadas para sus edades. Esperamos verlo disponible cada verano,” dijo Wanita Kaupert. Casi 45 familias de SWISD asistieron al menos una sesión de MarkerSpace.

ESTUDIANTES DEL ÁREA COMPETEN EN CAMPO DE CIBER A través de un socio entre La Fundación de CyberTexas y Southwest ISD, los estudiantes del área participaron en dos campos de entrenamiento de una semana que enseñan los conceptos de arquitectura y seguridad red, tanto como asegurar las computadoras con el sistema operativo Linux. La actividad culminante fue la competición en línea en que equipos de cuatro personas recibieron redes y computadoras defectivas y tuvieron que asegurar las máquinas y construir una red funcional en menos de cuatro horas. El equipo superior en cada campo recibió un Chromebook para continuar practicando sus nuevas habilidades técnicas.

MENSAJE DEL SUPERINTENDENTE Familias de SWISD, ¡Bienvenidos otra vez a SWISD! Este año escolar promete ser uno de los años más ocupado y más exitoso. Durante los últimos cuatro años, los estudiantes y maestros de SWISD han puesto nuevas y las más altas marcas académicas en los exámenes más rigurosos hasta la fecha del estado. El personal y los estudiantes han seguido una trayectoria ascendente sin igual. A decir que estamos orgullosos de sus resultados en los pasillos, en el teatro, en las pistas y los campos es quedarse corto – ¡no podemos estar más orgullosos. Este año oficialmente abrimos las puertas a nuestra facilidad más nueva – Southwest Preparatoria Legacy. Comenzamos en año escolar 2017-2018 con los grados de noveno a undécimo y añadir el grado duodécimo el año siguiente (2018-2019). Abriendo nuestra segunda escuela comprensiva en SWISD dará más oportunidades a los estudiantes, nos preparará para recibir el futuro con brazos abiertos mientras crecemos y así comenzamos nuevas tradiciones. Estamos emocionados a traer los Titanes junto con nuestros Dragones. Al comenzar este nuevo año escolar, favor de estar al tanto de nuestro plan estratégico y compromiso a nuestra comunidad llamado, “Cada Niño, Cada Día.” Nuestro plan estratégico incluyó más de 2,500 respuestas a la encuesta, y desarrolladores y diseñadores para bosquejar seis metas importantes en las cuales estamos trabajando. Estas metas incluyen Instrucción, Ambiente Social Emocional, Comunicación, Ambiente Académica, Compromiso Comunitario y Desarrollo Profesional. Nuestro compromiso será enviado a cada hogar y explicaremos lo que los padres/tutores pueden esperar de nosotros, y en que estamos responsables de cumplir nuestras metas como se mide en la Tarjeta de Salud del Distrito anual. Se puede encontrar esta tarjeta en nuestro sitio del Internet al fin de cada año escolar. En conclusión, quiero felicitar nuestra mesa directiva de haber sido seleccionado La Mesa Directiva del Año de la Región 20. Nuestra mesa conecta, apoya e inspira éxito en todo lo que hace. Sirven con altas expectativas entre ellos, por mí y por cada estudiante. Estoy bendecido para servir con siete héroes contemporáneos que guían con dedicación, integridad y corazones generosos por los estudiantes, padres y la comunidad de SWISD. Tenemos muchas ganas al ver a todos en el primer día de la escuela, el 28 de agosto, 2017. Estamos totalmente dedicados a proveer caminos de éxito para cada estudiante, y prometemos mantener nuestros padres bien informados con nuestra trayectoria. Estamos listos para comenzar un nuevo año, estamos emocionados tener nuestros estudiantes de la escuela una vez más y, ¡SOMOS Southwest!
