Basel East Trinational Conurbation

Structural upgrading of an inner-city transitional space

The metropolitan area of Basel is a part of northern Switzerland where many people live and work. While the region is renowned as a high-quality place to live and work, the landscape still needs to be qualified and protected as a key local recreation area with distinct landscape patterns.

The inner-city area is characterised by large-scale transport planning from the 1960s and 1970s. The task is to develop ideas and design concepts for a postfossil fuel urban development, e.g. by restructuring the road and adjoining mixed-use spaces and tapping into the potential of open space. The tools of open space planning and urban development should be used to give the area in question its own urban identity. The task involves exploring the concept in depth taking the example of one sub-section.

The task is to design the Large Loop and surrounding space in the Upper Rhine Country Park with its landscape, cultural, archaeological, industrial/commercial and tourist features and attractions. The area in question includes the landscape on both sides of the Rhine to the east of Basel to Möhlin/Schwörstädt. The task involves exploring the concept in depth taking the example of one sub-section.

Candidates may be studying these disciplines or already working in them. The project is initiated by the Senate Department for Urban Development and Environment. The prize plays a key role in developing new ideas in design, planning and use of plants in horticultural architecture and landscape planning as well as promoting the careers of young planners and designers. The work focuses on illustrated depictions. Work is assessed on an anonymous basis. Each candidate must submit two draft plans on paper in the required DIN A0 format and one CD containing printable versions of both plans as pdf and jpeg. The work must be submitted in German. English is also accepted. For each task, an independent jury will decide which solutions will be awarded the Peter Joseph Lenné Prize. Other high quality work may be

awarded Peter Joseph Lenné Commendations. Karl Foerster Commendations may be awarded to work displaying very good use of plants. The winners will be awarded their prizes at a ceremony in November 2012 at Berlin's Akademie der Künste. A selection of work will be exhibited in Berlin. The results of the process and illustrations of the best and most interesting work will be published in a document. Remuneration A Peter Joseph Lenné prize amounting to #5,000 can be awarded in each of the categories. The Peter Joseph Lenné Commendations involve a book prize. The commendations from the Karl Foerster Foundation are worth a total of #1,500. Participation conditions Teams or individuals are eligible to take part provided that everyone is under the age of 35 on 10 August 2012. Each participant may only compete in one of the two tasks and may only submit one entry. There are no other participation conditions.

By participating, the candidates agree to their submitted work becoming the property of the initiator, being exhibited and discussed in public and being reproduced for documentation and archiving. They also agree to the work submitted for the competition or parts thereof being published by the institutions involved in the call for tenders (Senate Department for Urban Development and Environment; Grün Berlin GmbH; Akademie der Künste (Academy of the Arts), Berlin; Federation of German Landscape Architects (BDLA); Technical University of Berlin; Beuth Hochschule Berlin; Karl Foerster Foundation) with reference to the author. Wherever possible, the designs will be forwarded to the appropriate organisations for future use. Copyrights remain with the author.
