The instruments in the orchestra are divided into instrument families – strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Sometimes, instruments within the families look or sound similar. The orchestra is led by a conductor, sometimes called “maestro”. How many instruments can you name?

Juan Arriaga (1806-1826)

South of the Border Mexican Medley

John Philips (1930-present)

Nicknamed “the Spanish Mozart”, Juan Arriaga, was a child prodigy who wrote this piece when he was just 14 years old! Los esclavos felices is the overture, or orchestral introduction, to his opera of the same name. Sadly, only the overture has survived. Overtures can sometimes tell us about the time and setting before an opera begins.When listening to this piece, try to imagine where this opera takes place and what the story could be about. Do you see a peaceful forest or a busy city? In music, a medley is a piece composed and arranged from parts of other popular songs. Listen as we explore the familiar folk songs of Mexico: Celito Lindo, Las Chiapanecas, La Cucaracha, and Jarabe Tapatío. All of these featured songs will probably make you want to dance. And that’s ok! Jarabe Tapatío often called the Mexican Hat Dance, is the national dance of Mexico.

Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953)

featuring dancers from the Eastern Connecticut Ballet Peter and the Wolf was written by Sergei Prokofiev [say: SEHR-gay PRO-cough-ee-ehv] for his friend, Natalya Sats, director of the Central Children’s Theatre in Moscow, Russia. He wanted to write a musical symphony that introduced children to instruments of the orchestra. After about two weeks, he finished this musical fairytale. A narrator will help tell the story, while each character is represented by a different instrument of the orchestra. No spoilers from us! But we can tell you who the characters are, and which instruments in the orchestra play their parts: Peter ............................... the strings The bird ................................. a flute The duck ............................ an oboe The cat ............................ a clarinet Grandfather .................... a bassoon The wolf .......................... three horns The hunters’ rifles ........ timpani Narrator Resurrección Espinosa-Frink is a Spanish playwright, theater director, and writer. Resurrección was born in Tijola, Almeria, Spain where she studied Philosophy and Letters at the University of Granada. She has taught at Connecticut College, University of Rhode Island, and the New London Public school system. She is the Director and Founder of Teatro Latino de New London and the former director of Teatro Latino Estudiantil at the URI. She lives in New London, participates in the Local Authors Conference, and is a frequent contributor to the Perspective/Opinion page of The Day Newspaper.

When Do I Clap?

Many people think that when the music stops, the audience claps. However, that’s not always true in orchestral concerts! Some music is broken up into movements (smaller divisions of a piece, like chapters in a book). You’ll know the piece is over and it is time to applaud when the conductor puts his arms down.

Juan de Arriaga (1806-1826)

Juan de Arriaga, tildado “el Mozart español”, era un niño prodigioso que compuso esta pieza cuando tenía ¡sólo 14 años! “Los esclavos felices” es la obertura—es decir, la introducción orquestal—de la ópera que lleva el mismo nombre. Desgraciadamente, se nos ha quedado únicamente la obertura. Las oberturas suelen informarnos, antes que comience la ópera, acerca de la época y el ambiente que experimentaremos. Al escuchar esta pieza, intenta imaginarte dónde posiblemente se desarrolle esta ópera y de qué pueda tratarse. ¿Te figuras un bosque pacífico o una ciudad de mucho ajetreo?

AL SUR DE LA FRONTERA: POPURRÍ MUSICAL

Al tratarse de música, un popurrí es una pieza compuesta y arreglada en base a distintas partes de varias canciones populares. Escucha mientras exploremos una variedad de canciones folklóricas familiares de México: “Cielito lindo”, “Las chiapanecas”, “La cucaracha” y “Jarabe tapatío”. Todas estas canciones señaladas probablemente te inciten a bailar. ¡Y así debe ser! “Jarabe tapatío”, que se conoce en los Estados Unidos por “Mexican Hat Dance”, es la danza nacional de México.

En primer término, los bailarines de El Ballet del Este de Connecticut “Pedro y el Lobo” fue escrito por Sergei Prokofiev [se pronuncia SER-guei PRO-co-fief] para su amiga Natalya Sats, directora de El Teatro Central para Jóvenes, en Moscú, Rusia. Deseaba escribir una sinfonía musical mediante la cual familiarizar a los jóvenes con los instrumentos orquestales. Tardó sólo un par de semanas en terminar este cuento de hadas musical. Una narradora ayudará a contar la historia, mientras cada personaje sea representado por un instrumento distinto. Sin intención de estropear nada, nos permitimos decirte quiénes son los personajes y cuáles son los instrumentos que los van a representar: Pedro.....................los instrumentos de cuerda el Pájaro..............................................una flauta el Pato....................................................un oboe el Gato.............................................un clarinete el Abuelo...............................................un fagot el Lobo...........................................tres trompas los Rifles de los Cazadores..........los tímpanos

La narradora, Resurrección Espinosa-Frink, es una dramaturga española, directora de teatro y escritora. Nació en Tijola, Almería (España), y cursó Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de Granada. Ha dado clases en el Connecticut College, en la Universidad de Rhode Island y en el sistema de escuelas públicas de New London. Estableció y dirige El Teatro Latino de esta ciudad, y anteriormente dirigió El Teatro Latino Estudiantil en la Universidad de Rhode Island. Es residente en New London y participa en la Conferencia de Autores Locales, además de contribuir con frecuencia a la página del periódico The Day llamada de Perspectivas y Opiniones.

¿Cuándo aplaudo?

Muchas personas piensan que cuando la música se detiene, la audiencia aplaude.¡Pero esto no es siempre así en los conciertos de orquesta! Hay algunas músicas que están divididas en movimientos (divisiones pequeñas de la pieza, tal como los capítulos de libros). Se sabe que la pieza ha terminado y es hora de aplaudir cuando el conductor pone sus brazos abajo.
