Pastor's Corner I have often wondered about the significance of the Presentation while praying the Rosary. As my fingers pass this fourth Joyful Mystery, I have often desired to obtain some insight that might allow me to live this mystery more perfectly. This mystery of course involves the Presentation of a first-born son by a Jewish couple. It was the fulfillment of a long held promise and a way of thanking a gracious God who had spared their Hebrew ancestors the pain of grief. On the night of that first Passover, God had promised to spare the first born son of every family who painted the mantel of their doorway red with the blood of a lamb…and ate it’s flesh. God always keeps his promises. By having Jesus presented in the temple, Joseph and Mary were keeping theirs. This mystery is therefore in part about obedience. Closely connected to the Presentation was the purification of the mother. Despite modern cries of misogyny, the purification had to do with cleansing after contact with blood. Since childbirth involves bleeding…Mary would have been rendered impure. This of course is a bit of irony for us in the know, since Mary who was conceived without sin, had no need to be purified. Yet she submitted herself to the task. This mystery is therefore in part about humility. We know from scripture that this mystery is closely associated with Simeon, a righteous and devout man who was awaiting the consolation of Israel and Anna a prophetess who worshipped day and night in the temple. She too was awaiting the redemption of Israel. They see this child as the fulfillment of longawaited prophesy. This mystery is in part about the virtue of Hope and perseverance. The Presentation would have taken place on the fortieth day after birth. If you do the math, it will have been 40 days since the celebration of Christmas. It is also the halfway point of winter! The darkness of paganism celebrates this milestone of the year with orgies and the like. We as Christians however choose celebrate the Christ Child, who came as light to the world in order to expel the darkness. This association with Christmas is why the Feast of the Presentation was also known in ancient times as Candlemas. Traditionally, the church blesses her candle supply on this day and often will begin at least the earliest of these celebrations with a candlelight procession. So you see, this mystery is also about light. It is my prayer that as we pass by our fifth Anniversary as Parish, that our future may be filled with the wonder of this most beautiful Feast. May you and yours, experience the joy of obedience to God’s will, humility, Hope, perseverance, and light. May St. Augustine intercede for us and may Our Lady of Victory protect all who put their confidence in the Mysteries of her Most Holy Rosary! Amen.

A menudo me pregunto sobre el significado de la Presentación mientras rezo el Rosario. Mientras que mis dedos pasan por el cuarto Misterio Gozoso, a menudo deseo obtener una visión que me ayude a vivir este misterio mas perfectamente. El misterio por supuesto envuelve la Presentación del primogénito de una pareja Judía. Fue el cumplimiento de una promesa y una forma de agradecer a un Dios bondadoso quien le a ahorrado a sus ancestros Hebreos el dolor. En la noche de esa primera Pascua, Dios había prometido perdonar la vida de todo hijo primogénito de cada familia que pintara el borde de las puertas rojas con la sangre de la oveja...y comiera su carne. Dios siempre cumple sus promesas. Al tener a Jesus presentado en el templo, José y Maria estaban cumpliendo las de ellos. Este misterio es entonces en parte sobre la obediencia. Muy cercanamente conectado a la Presentación está la purificación de la madre. A pesar de los gritos modernos de misoginia, la purificación tiene que ver con la limpieza después del contacto con sangre. Ya que el nacimiento de un niño involucra sangrado...Maria hubiese sido considerada impura. Saber esto es para nosotros un poco irónico, ya que Maria quien fue concebida sin pecado, no necesitaba ser purificada. Aún ella se sometió a la tarea. Este misterio en parte es sobre la humildad. Sabemos por la escritura que este misterio está relacionado con Simeón, un hombre justo y devoto que esperaba la consolación de Israel y Ana una profeta quien adoraba día y noche en el templo. Ella también esperaba la redención de Israel. Ellos ven a este niño como el cumplimiento de la profecía tan esperada. Este misterio es en parte sobre la Virtud de Esperanza y perseverancia. La Presentación hubiese tomado lugar en el cuadragésimo día de su nacimiento. Si hacen la matemática, seria 40 días después de la Navidad. ¡También el punto mitad del invierno! La oscuridad del paganismo celebrado en este tiempo del año con orgias y los gustos. Nosotros como Cristianos sin embargo escogemos celebrar el Niño Cristo, quien vino como luz para el mundo para disipar las tinieblas. Esta asociación con la Navidad es porque le Fiesta de la Presentación fue también conocida en tiempos antiguos como Candelaria. Tradicionalmente, la iglesia bendice su suministro de velas en este día y a menudo comenzaría al menos esta celebración más temprana con una procesión. Así pueden ver, este misterio es también sobre la luz. Es mi oración que mientras pasamos nuestro Aniversario como Parroquia, que nuestro futuro sea llenado con maravillas de este hermoso misterio. Que ustedes y los suyos, experimenten el gozo de la obediencia al deseo de Dios, humildad, Esperanza, perseverancia, y luz. Que San Agustín interceda por nosotros y que Nuestra Señora de la Victoria proteja a todos los que ponen su confianza en el Misterio de su Santo Rosario! Amén.
