MESSAGE FROM MIGRANT OFFICE MENSAJE DE LA OFICINA DEL PROGRAMA EDUCATIVO MIGRANTE
Es de suma importancia para nosotros saber las opiniones y necesidades de cada uno de ustedes para así poder establecer el plan de trabajo para cada uno de sus hijos durante el año escolar. Es por esa razón que necesitamos el apoyo de cada uno de ustedes para que crezcan las iniciativas del programa. Actualmente hay 177 familias migrantes elegibles en HISD. Agradecemos a los padres que hacen el esfuerzo de ir a las juntas de padres y participan en los eventos que el Programa Educativo Migrante provee. Necesitamos la participación de TODAS las familias. Si usted no participa en los eventos que el Programa Migrante provee los más afectados serán sus hijos. Necesitamos de su ayuda para demostrarle al gobierno federal que las familias que participan en el Programa Educativo Migrante son familias comprometidas y dedicadas a la educación de sus hijos.
Our goal is to successfully meet the academic needs of the migrant students. Your feedback is essential to the program as it will assist with identifying the needs to increase student achievement. For that reason, we need ALL migrant parents to support the Migrant Education Program’s initiatives by actively participating in the program’s events and attending parent meetings. There are currently 177 eligible migrant families in HISD. We appreciate those parents that continuously participate in our events and attend parent meetings. We need ALL migrant families to participate because it’s very important that we meet the federal guidelines of the grant. Become involved and engaged in your child’s education!

STEPPING STONES
Stepping Stones es un programa para niños migrantes de Texas en edad preescolar de 3 o 4 años. Fue desarrollado en conjunto con la Agencia de Educación de Texas (TEA) y está disponible gratuitamente a todas las familias del Programa Educativo Migrante para ayudar a los niños y sus familias de HISD.
Stepping Stones is a Texas home-based early childhood migrant program for 3- and 4-year-olds that was developed in partnership with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and is available for free to all migrant programs throughout the state to support migrant children and their families.
Los niños que cumplan 3 años de edad pueden participar en el programa de Stepping Stones. Isela Anaya, educador de casa, provee las lecciones. Actualmente contamos con 13 familias que participan en el programa las cuales reciben visitas en el hogar una vez por semana. Cada visita dura aproximadamente de 45 minutos a una hora dependiendo de cada estudiante. Este programa, basado en el hogar, consiste de 100 lecciones que están alineadas a las guías de aprendizaje preescolar de Texas. Las lecciones están agrupadas en unidades de 10 lecciones acerca del aprendizaje temprano, las cuales están disponibles en ingles y español.
Children turning three years old during the school year are eligible to participate in the Stepping Stones program. Currently there are 13 migrant families participating in the program. Isela Anaya, home educator, models and provides weekly lessons. Each lesson is comprised of 45 minutes to one hour. This home-based program consists of 100 lessons that are aligned to the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines. The lessons, available in both English and Spanish, are bundled into sets of 10 around early learning themes or units.
Actualmente la mayoría de los estudiantes ya terminaron la unidad “Yo/ Emociones” en la cual aprendieron las partes del cuerpo, sus funciones y cómo expresar sus emociones correctamente. Estamos empezando la segunda unidad: “Transportación.” En esta segunda unidad los estudiantes aprenderán los tipos de transportes, sus partes, el propósito de cada uno de ellos y el significado de algunas señales de tráfico al igual que hablaremos acerca de los servidores de la comunidad. El programa educativo migrante proporciona todos los materiales y manipulativos necesarios para realizar las actividades de la semana en casa. Cada lección enfatiza la lectura y el desarrollo del lenguaje. Este modelo capacita a los padres a tener éxito como los primeros maestros de sus hijos con la guía del educador de hogar. Most of the students in the program have completed the first unit, “Me/Emotions.” In this unit, students identified body parts and learned about different emotions. In the second unit, students will learn about different types of transportation such as the public bus, learn about the meaning of traffic signals, recognize possible ways of transportation, and learn about community members. The Migrant Education Program provides all the materials and the necessary manipulatives for each of the lessons. The lessons heavily emphasize language and literacy development and follow a “gradual release of responsibility” model that empowers parents to be successful teachers of their own child, with guidance from the home educator. EXPLORE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS On Saturday, March 1st migrant families participated in the biggest open house in Texas at the University of Texas-Austin. This special event featured approximately 400 programs across the campus including performances, exhibits, lectures and activities for the entire family—for elementary, middle school, and high school students. This opportunity also provided a glimpse of university life.

EXPLORE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS El sábado, 1˚ de marzo las familias migrantes participaron en la “apertura de casa” más grande en Texas en la Universidad de TexasAustin. Este evento especial contó con aproximadamente 400 programas a través del campus incluyendo actuaciones, exposiciones, conferencias y actividades para toda la familia — para los estudiantes de primaria hasta secundaria. Los estudiantes también tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer la vida universitaria.

Are you a high school senior? Do you know what college/university you are attending in the fall? Consider applying for CAMP. What is CAMP?? CAMP stands for College Assistance Migrant Program. This program is specifically for migrant students who are enrolled in their first year of undergraduate studies at a CAMP Project University. The funding supports completion of the first year of studies. There are currently 6 CAMP Projects in the state of Texas.

SUMMER MIGRANT TUTORIAL PROGRAM HISD’s Migrant Education Program is pleased to offer a free summer in-home tutoring in Reading/Writing to migrant students in grades PK8th grade. Tutorials will be available from June – August Monday-Thursday. Additional information is forthcoming. Deadline to participate is April 30th. No exceptions!

CREDIT-BY-EXAM (CBE) Migrant Education Program will be offering Spanish 1A and Spanish 1B to all 8th grade migrant students on Saturday, April 12th at Hattie Mae White (4400 W. 18th Street; 77092). Students will have the opportunity to earn high school credit. Students must demonstrate 80% or higher to earn credit. Please contact the Migrant Education Program office 713-556-7288 if interested.

CREDIT-BY-EXAM (CBE) El Programa Educativo Migrante estará ofreciendo Español 1A y 1B a todos los estudiantes migrantes en el 8 vo grado el sábado, 12 de abril. Los estudiantes que deseen obtener crédito por un curso pueden hacerlo mediante crédito-porexamen. Cada estudiante debe demostrar un 80% o más para obtener crédito. It’s very important to have this information updated and current so that you are better informed of the program. Please redeem uniform vouchers on or before April 20, 2014. Five migrant seniors from Lee HS, Madison HS, and Jordan HS applied for the AMET scholarship. Twelve scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded annually to entering freshmen. If awarded, scholarship recipients will be notified by email.
