C21 Madrid en Mayo Celebration of Learning

C21 Madrid en Mayo During the first week of the holidays in May 2017 C21 had the opportunity to visit Madrid, Spain’s stunning capital city. This was the first visit abroad for XP, and had a focus on Spanish and the Arts. Students had some reading around the artists Lichtenstein and Picasso in the weeks prior to departure, to set the scene for the groundbreaking art work they would see. The visit was over four days, with four areas of focus. Day one and three focused on the Thyssen Museum and Reina Sofia Art Gallery containing world famous paintings, sculptures and art installations. Students were asked to sketch anything that struck them, but were particularly drawn to the work of Kandinsky in the first Museum. On the third day at the Reina Sofia, the main focus was the work of Picasso, in the run up to Guernica, and its aftermath. During day two students completed a walking tour of Central Madrid, including the fabulous Palacio Real, one of the most beautiful buildings in the whole of Madrid, and the Plaza Mayor, one of the oldest squares in the city. Also on the final day students visited the Bernabeu Stadium, home to La Liga champions Real Madrid. There were plenty of photo opportunities, not least the shower room of the football team! Encompassing the entire visit was the urge to speak Spanish and become immersed in Spanish culture, which students gladly did, from small victories such as asking for dinner, to notices, wonders and questions about the Spanish way of life. The final product was a journal, started in Madrid, with an Art section and a section about the Spanish language, which students continued to craft back at school to prepare for this Celebration of Learning.

During tonight’s COL students describe and explain their journals. Students will then go on to simply analyse their favourite piece of Art, and talk about the Spanish that they used. This booklet summarises this evening.

Toby Williamson Mi pintura favorita fue “Mandolin, Fruit Bowl and Plaster Arm” por Pablo Picasso. Me gusta porque es lleno de color pero además sencillo y claro. Es una pintura más realista y comprensible de Picasso, por eso me gusta; sin embargo, todavía es algo surrealista. Pedí mi comida en español en el tercer día; pedí aros de cebolla, patatas fritas y Coca Cola sin hielo porque no había muchas opciones vegetarianas.

My favourite painting is “Mandolin Fruit Bowl and Plaster Arm” by Pablo Picasso. I like it because it is colourful but also simple and clear. It’s more realistic and comprehensible than other Picasso paintings, which is why I like it; however, it is still somewhat surrealist. I ordered my dinner in Spanish on the third day; I ordered onion rings, fries and Coca Cola without ice because there weren’t many vegetarian options.

Jack Kerry Mi pintura favorita fue “Guernica” de Picasso porque el artista ha capturado un momento en historia, y te hace pensar. Aprendí la frase “un bocadillo de jamón y queso por favor”. Yo no tengo un parte favorito, pero fue probablemente el avión. My favourite art piece was Guernica by Picasso because the artist has captured a moment in history, and it makes you think. I learnt to say, “Please can I have a ham and cheese bap?”. I don't really have a favourite part, but it would probably be the plane journey.

Holly Scott Mi pintura favorita fue “The Dream” por Franz Marc. Me gusta porque es muy hermosa. Los colores usados son amarillo, verde, azul y rojo. La pintura es muy interesante. Aprendí la frase “¿puedo tener una bolsa por favor?”. Pedí mi comida en español, el martes pedí nueve pepitas de pollo con patatas fritas y una limonada congelada. El miércoles pedí una hamburguesa de pollo con patatas fritas y una fanta naranja grande. Hablé un poco español, principalmente palabras como “gracias” y “por favor”. My favourite painting was “The Dream” by Franz Marc. I like it because it is very beautiful. The colours used are yellow, green blue and red. The picture is very interesting. I learnt the phrase ‘Can I have a plastic bag please?’. I ordered my dinner in Spanish, on Tuesday, I ordered nine chicken nuggets with chips and a frozen lemonade. On Wednesday I ordered a chicken burger with chips and a big orange Fanta. I spoke a bit of Spanish, mainly words like “thank you” and “please”.

Mi pintura favorita fue, “la mandolina, el bol de fruta y el brazo de yeso” y está en la Reina Sofía. La pintura fue hecha por Picasso. Me gusta porque hay las formas de tres d y dos d. Es muy interesante. En Madrid, aprendí unas frases en español. A las cenas, dije, “puedo tener” y entonces la comida. También, aprendí la frase, “espere peatón, peatón pulse”, fue en el cruce. My favourite painting was, “Mandolin, Fruit Bowl and Plaster Arm” and it is in the Reina Sofía. The painting was created by Picasso. I like the painting because there are 3D and 2D shapes. It is very interesting. In Madrid, I learnt a few Spanish phrases. At lunch time, I said, “can I have” and then my food. Also, I learnt the phrase, “pedestrian wait, pedestrian push”, it was at the crossing.

Ethan Booth El arte que he elegido se llama “Architecture” de The Man from Potin y se hizo en mil novecientos veintiuno. Además,representa la ciudad de New York. Me encanta esta pintura porque es abstracta y tiene formas afiladas para la gente y los edificios. En adición lo encontré más fácil de esbozar.                                                                                        Pedí mi comida en español, el segundo día pedí seis nuggets de pollo.  Entonces el tercer día, pedí bolas picantes. También en el viaje, aprendí a decir “puedo tener” y “¿cuánto cuesta?”. The art I have chosen is called “Architecture” by the man from Potin and was created in 1921. It also represents the city of New York. I love this painting because it is abstract and has sharp shapes for people and buildings. In addition I found it easier to sketch. I ordered my meals in Spanish, the second day I ordered six chicken nuggets. Then on the third day, I ordered spicy meatballs. Also on the trip, I learned to say, “Can I have” and “How much does it cost?”.

Amaan Malik Mi obra favorita en el Museo de Arte Reina Sofía es “la garrafa y el libro” que tiene unos colores pero impone una imagen fuerte. Fue pintada de aceite. Para nuestro viaje a Madrid, tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar el idioma español en una variedad de maneras. Aprendí palabras y frases tan pronto como llegué a la cafetería local y además a la galería de arte. Otro que aprendí fue: "¿cuánto cuesta?". Había muchos otros, y el hecho que podríamos hablar español para mejorar nuestras habilidades de fluidez y comunicación con la gente español. My favourite work at the Reina Sofía Museum of Art is "The bottle`and the book" that has some colours but imposes a strong image. It was painted with oil. For our trip to Madrid, we had the opportunity to speak the Spanish language in a variety of ways. I learned words and phrases as soon as I got to the local coffee shop and, in addition, at the art gallery. Another one I learned was: "how much does it cost?". There were many others, and the fact that we could speak Spanish to improve our fluency and communication skills with Spanish people.

Lyle Haines Mi pintura favorita que había visto en España era “tete de belier sobre una mesa” de Picasso. Me gusta porque es sencillo y sólo hay los colores lisos y oscuros. Yo aprendí algunas palabras y frases y la principal que aprendí fue “disculpame”. Mientras que allí no pedí mi comida en español porque Chloe pedió mi comida el primer día. Luego utilicé la máquina el día siguiente y el último día pedí en inglés. Mientras que en Madrid, utilicé unas frases sencillas como “por favor, gracias, hola y adiós”. My favourite piece of artwork that I saw  in Spain was the “tete de belier sur une table”, because I like how simple it is and just the plain, dark colours.     I learnt a few words and phrases, the main one I used one was “excuse me”. Whilst there I didn’t really order my food in Spanish because Chloe ordered my food the first day. Then I used the machine the next day and on the last day I ordered in English. Whilst in Madrid I used a few simple phrases like “please, thank you, hello and goodbye”.

Anthony Leigh Mi obra favorita fue Guernica. Me gusta porque es extraña como las personas y objetos en ella parecen asustados y son una mezcla de formas. En España aprendí algunas nuevas frases tales como “panini ibérico y queso”, “lo siento” y “librería”.

My favourite art work was Guernica. I like it because it’s strange, as the people and objects in it look scared and they are a mixture of forms. In Spain, I learnt some new phrases and words such as “a ham and cheese panini”, “sorry” and “bookshop”.

Alex Witton Mi obra favorita fue Guernica. Me gusta porque es interesante y oscura, que es extraña para Picasso. Tiene negro, blanco y gris. Yo pienso que ha capturado las emociónes maravillosamente. Aprendí la palabra “bolso” y la frase “disculpe”. Pedí mi comida en español, pedí gofres y Coca Cola grande, fue delicioso. Hablé un poco de español. Principalmente las palabras fáciles como “Hola, adiós, por favor y lo siento”. My favourite art work was Guernica. I like it because it is interesting and dark, which is unusual for Picasso. It has black, white and grey. I think it captures the emotions beautifully. I learnt the word “bag” and I learnt the  phrase “excuse me please”. I ordered my food in Spanish, I ordered waffles and coke, it was very tasty. I spoke a bit of Spanish. I said simple words such as “hello, bye, thank you and sorry”.

Emily Poncia Mi obra favorita fue ‘To each concrete man’ por Ree Morton. Fue hecho en 1974 y usa la gama de materiales. Usa acrilico, metal, lienzo y pluma. Me gusta porque es muy interesante y fue extraña pero guay. Hablé bastante mucho español. Aprendí la frase ‘puedo tener una bolsa  por favor?’. Pedí mi comida en español, pedí un bocadillo de jamón y queso con multivita. La frase que he usado la más fue ‘Gracias’ y ‘Hola’ porque es educado. My favourite piece of art work was “To each concrete man” by Ree Morton. It was created in 1947 and uses a range of materials. It uses acrylic, metal, canvas and pen. I like it because it is very interesting and it was strange but cool. I spoke quite a lot of Spanish. I learnt the phrase ‘Can I have a bag please?’. I ordered my dinner in Spanish, I ordered ham and cheese sandwich with multivita juice. The phrases I used the most were ‘Thank you’ and ‘hello’ because it is polite.

Ben Smith Mi pintura favorita fue “Bodegón con instrumentos” porque es muy vibrante y tiene un contraste en color.  También es interesante mirar e interpretar. Pedí mi comida en español, pedí unas patatas fritas grandes y una coca cola dieta grande.Además, aprendí las palabras, “nuevo” y “museo”. En general hablé un poco de español. My favourite painting is “Still-life: instruments” because it is very vibrant and has a contrast in colour. Also, it is interesting to look at and interpret. I ordered my dinner in Spanish, I ordered large fries and a large diet coke. Furthermore, I leant the words, “new” and “museum”. Overall, I spoke a bit of Spanish.

Liam Melville Mi pintura favorita fue Guernica de Picasso debido a las formas diferentes y la creatividad.

Pedí mi comida en español, pedí un bocadillo de jamón y queso.Aprendí las palabras “museo” y también “bocadillo”.Hablé mucho español.

My favorite painting was Picasso's Guernica because of the different shapes and creativity.
 I ordered my meal in Spanish, I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich. I learned the words "museum" and also "sandwich." I spoke a lot of Spanish.

Noah Wood Mi obra favorita fue Guernica. Me gusta a causa de la historia detrás de la obra y las formas diferentes. Mucho del tiempo que he hablado español era para la cena. El nuevo español que aprendí fue pedir mi comida en el primer día ‘queso y jamón panini y multivita.’ Creo que he usado un montón de español. My favourite work was Guernica. I like it because of the history behind the artwork and the different shapes. Much of the time I spoke Spanish was for dinner. The new Spanish I learned was to order my food on the first day 'cheese and ham panini and multivita'. I think I used a lot of Spanish.

Sonny Sykes Mi pintura favorita fue Guernica. Me gusta porque es muy hermosa y lleno de color. Aprendí las frases “hola, cómo estás, triste y gracias”. Hablé un poco de español. Nuestros rasgos de carácter del insti se mostraron en todas partes. Nos ayudamos mutuamente a superar problemas personales y problemas de hidratación a causa del tiempo. My favourite painting was Guernica. I like it because it is very beautiful and full of colour.
 I learned the phrases "hello, how are you, sad and thank you". I spoke a little Spanish.
 Our school’s character traits were shown everywhere. We helped each other overcome personal problems and hydration problems because of the hot weather.

Ben Whittaker El primer día fuimos a una tienda de comida y pedimos un sándwich de jamón con queso. También pedí una bebida que contiene piña, mango y naranja.También anduvimos por el Museo de Arte Thyssen. El segundo día consistió en un paseo por el Palacio Real y para la cena fuimos a McDonalds. Pedí una hamburguesa de pollo con patatas fritas y una coca-cola dieta. En mi opinión el tercer día fue el mejor. Primero recorrimos el Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Fue una experiencia asombrosa porque el edificio fue muy grande. Más tarde en el día, fuimos al Museo Reina Sofía que tiene una pieza de arte que es bien conocida por todo el mundo, Guernica por Picasso. Cuando vi esta pieza fue asombrado por el tamaño, porque llena casi un pared. Este fue mi pintura favorita. On the first day we went to a food store and ordered, a ham sandwich with cheese. I also ordered a drink containing pineapple, mango and orange. We also walked around the Thyssen Art Museum. The second day consisted of a walk around the Royal Palace and for dinner we went to Mcdonalds.  I ordered a chicken burger with fries and a diet coke. In my opinion the third day was the best. We first toured around the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium which is the Real Madrid Stadium. This was an amazing experience because the building was massive.  Later on in the day we went to the Reina Sofia Art Museum which inside has a piece of art that is well known around the world, Guernica by Picasso.  When I saw this piece I was astonished by the size of it as it nearly filled a wall. This was my favourite piece of art by far.

El artista tiene la idea de una fuente impresa. Me gusta porque es muy impresionante. En el primer día pedí un bocadillo de jamón y queso que es decir  “cheese and ham sandwich”. Hablé un poco español. Hello, my name is Alex and welcome to my celebration of learning. Today I’m going to talk about the sculpture “Brushstroke” by Lichtenstein. Brushstroke is “pincelada” in Spanish, The artist took the idea from a printed fountain. I like it because it is very impressive. On the first day I asked for a cheese and ham sandwich in Spanish. I spoke a bit of Spanish.

Archie Harris Me gustó “la Pincelada” por Lichtenstein porque era dinámico y diferente a los demás porque fue muy sencillo en diseño. Español que he aprendido en Madrid.
 En mi primer día aprendí “wrap pollo” que significa “chicken wrap”.
 El día siguiente aprendí “Palacio Real”, que es el palacio real en Madrid donde fuimos. I like the sculpture “Brushstroke” by Lichtenstein because it is dynamic and different to other sculptures and was simple in design. Spanish I have learnt in Madrid. On my first day I learnt “wrap pollo” which means “chicken wrap”. On the next day I learnt Palacio Real which is the Royal Palace in Madrid that we went to.

Pedí mi comida en español, pedí wrap de pollo, agua y galleta de chocolate. My favorite picture was Guernica, I liked it because it is beautiful and to see it was a rare opportunity. I learnt new words like “chicken wrap, sorry and chicken burger”. I ordered my dinner in Spanish, I ordered a chicken wrap, water and a chocolate cookie.

Hola, me llamo Mary. Mi pintura favorita fue “Nude by the Sea” de Picasso porque es extraña y diferente. Aprendí las palabras “bocadillo” y “perdón”. Pedí mi comida en español, pedí “Puedo tener seis nuggets de pollo y patatas fritas y Coca Cola por favor?” Hablé un poco español. Hello, my name is Mary. My favourite painting was “Nude by the Sea” by Picasso because it is strange and different. I learnt the words “sandwich” and “excuse me”. I ordered my dinner in Spanish, I said “Can I have six chicken nuggets and chips and Coca Cola please?” I spoke a little bit of Spanish.

Mi obra favorita fue ' Cabeza llorando ' de Picasso. Me pareció muy interesante, debido a los colores, formas y técnicas utilizadas. Yo había visto antes de ir a la galería, pero fue interesante ver en la vida real, y como el estilo cubista era muy diferente al estilo de cuadros típicos.   El primer día pedí mi cena en español. También hablé un poco de español cuando pedí comida en otros lugares, y cuando fui a comprar otras cosas. Aunque, creo que hablé más español en la cafetería el primer día. My favourite piece of artwork was ‘Weeping Head’ by Picasso. I found this piece very interesting, because of the colours, shapes and techniques used. I had seen it before going to the gallery, but it was interesting to see it in real life as well, and how the cubist style of it was very different to that of typical paintings. On the first day that we were in Madrid, I ordered my dinner in Spanish. I also spoke a small amount of Spanish when ordering food elsewhere, and when I was buying other things. Although, I think that I spoke the most continuous Spanish in the Café on the first day.

Kelsea Roper .Mi obra favorita fue Guernica, de Picasso, porque fue abstracta; dibujé una parte de Guernica en mi revista. Aprendí las palabras “Bagel Salmón con Multivita plátano” cuando pedimos para el almuerzo en una tienda. También aprendí a decir “¿puedo tener una bolsa por favor?”. My favourite artwork was Guernica by Picasso because it was abstract; I drew a part of it in my journal. I learnt the words “salmon bagel with a banana smoothie” when we ordered food in the deli. Also, I learnt to say “Can I have a bag please?”.

Chloe Welch ¡Hola! Me llamo Chloe, estoy aquí para hablar de mi viaje a Madrid. Mi pintura favorita  fue la “Weeping Head” por Picasso, me gusta esto porque es muy bonita y tiene colores sencillos. En España pedimos nuestra comida en español, en el último día fuimos a “Hard Rock Café” donde pedí patatas fritas, hamburguesa y Coca Cola. Una de las palabras que aprendí fue “bolsa”. 
 Hello! My name is Chloe, I'm here to talk about my visit to Madrid. My favourite painting was the "Weeping Head" by Picasso, I like this because it is very pretty and has simple colours. In Spain we ordered our food in Spanish, on the last day we went to "Hard Rock Café" where I ordered french fries, hamburger and Coca Cola. One of the words I learned was “bag”.

Jasmine Pollard Mi pintura favorita fue Guernica porque había mucho que pasa en la imagen. Dibujé la imagen en mi libro mientras que nos sentamos en el museo. Esta obra de arte es una pieza histórica. Aprendí las palabras “bocadillo” y “yo estaba en…”. Hablé un poco de español. My favourite painting was Guernica because there was a lot going on in the picture. I drew the picture in my book while we sat in the museum. This work of art is a historical piece. I learnt the words “sandwich” and “I was in…”. I spoke a bit of Spanish.

Zara Yamani Mi pintura favorita fue “Composition II 1923” de Kandinsky. Me encanta porque los colores son muy, muy brillantes. También, me gusta mucho las formas porque son extremadamente interesantes. Aprendí a decir, “no fotos por favor” en español. Aprendí esto de las guardias en el museo porque se lo decían a mucha gente. Pedí mi comida en español; pedí hamburguesa vegetal que fue muy agradable. Hablé mucho español. My favourite painting was “Composition II 1923” by Kandinsky. I love it because the colours are very, very bright. Also, I like it a lot because the shapes are extremely interesting. I learnt how to say, “No photos please” in Spanish. I learnt this because the guards in the museum kept saying it. I ordered my food in Spanish;I ordered a veggie burger which was delicious. I spoke a lot of Spanish.

Beth Coates Pedí mi comida en espańol. Pedí una hamburguesa y coca cola, martes, hablé un poco de español. I ordered my food in Spanish I asked for a burger and coke on Tuesday. I spoke a bit of Spanish. My favourite painting was by Alexandra Exter, I liked this painting because when I first looked at it I looked at the vase, I don't know why but it stood out to me. It’s a bit bright and I liked the colour, some of the colours are bright and dark giving contrast. There are some nude colours in there, the artist is Alexandra Exter she is a painter of Ukrainian origin, although from 1907 onwards she spent a lot of time in Paris., where she met Pablo Picasso, George Braque  and the Italian Futurists Ardengo Soffici and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.
