Tell out, my soul

#438, The Hymnal 1982

Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) based on The Song of Mary © 1962, Hope Publishing company Music: Woodlands, Walter Greatorex (1877-1949). alt. © by permission of Oxford University Press. Used by permission.

1. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Savior shall my heart rejoice.

2. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;his mercy sure, from age the same; his holy Name-the Lord, the Mighty One. -continued

8

3. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

4. Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children’s children and for evermore!

Scripture Reading Mark 13:1-8 (NRSV) As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” 2 Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” 13

When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” 3

Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. 5

Questions for Reflection 1. Jesus helped others gain perspective by moving the location of his conversation with the disciples from the temple to the Mt. of Olives. Tell a story about an event, person, conversation, or resource that has sparked your imagination and helped you to see how you are called to participate in God’s mission, beyond focusing on maintaining large buildings and structures. If you have not yet found that conversation, what do you need to assist you and your worshiping community to begin to expand your imagination and join in this work? 1. God calls us to be in relationship with others and with creation. With God’s help we are about the work of healing our broken relationships and loving our neighbors as ourselves. When you think about the local context of your worshiping community, who sits on the margins — the “other” who may be just outside your door — and with whom God invites you to recognize, reach out, and be in relationship? The “other” may be another church, another demographic (e.g., race, age, gender identity, social class, relationship status, etc.). Can you name that group and one person you could reach out to in the next month to explore a relationship? Can you imagine how you might reach out to him/her/them? I invite you to covenant with your table group this morning that you will reach out to that person. If the “other” is the environment, what might you and/or your parish or worshiping community do to connect more with this “fragile earth, our island home”? 2. God is birthing a new reality, calling us to participate in God’s mission beyond the walls of our individual churches. As you imagine living into these new relationships you have covenanted to form, who might be helpful companions on the way? What relational network, locally or in ECCT, would help you and your parish or worshiping community actively participate in and support this new life of relationship and collaboration? 3.
