JARMAN NEWSLETTER March 2017
A note from Ms. Thompson, our amazing principal... The past couple of weeks have given us an early taste of spring. Even though the weather in Oklahoma can change from winter-like conditions to warm and sunny conditions in a day’s time, Spring is in full swing for the students at Jarman. Tis the season for spring activities, Spring Break, and of course, TESTING! Over the next several weeks, teachers and students will be gearing up for state tests, which will take place in April. We encourage students to get plenty of rest, eat nutritious food, and spend time at home reading and practicing math skills. Additionally, we are seeking volunteers for testing. If you are able to help, please contact your child’s teacher or Vickie Winden (
[email protected]) as soon as possible. We appreciate your help! The family survey that was sent home in January has provided us with great feedback concerning what our families think we are doing well and what areas we could improve. It is so nice to hear the numerous comments about how wonderful Jarman staff members are and how families appreciate our hard work! We APPRECIATE your kind words! We continue to receive and review these surveys. If you have not returned a survey, please consider doing so. We thank you in advance for taking the time to complete one. Your feedback helps us make decisions that positively impact our students and school. Please be sure to mark a few important dates on your calendar. Recently, students were informed about our upcoming PTA GLOW RUN! Please feel free to join us March 9th to cheer your child on as they run laps to help raise money for our school. Information came home in your child’s folder about how you can help us with this fundraiser. Also, don’t forget students will be out of school the week of March 13th through 17th for SPRING BREAK. Second grade families, please join us March 8th for the Wax Museum. Our students work very hard to prepare for this fun event! Additionally, be looking for report cards coming home on March 24th. Lastly, I want to give our Jarman patrons a huge THANK YOU for your vote on the recent bond issue! We can’t do what we do without your support! Have a fantastic March and enjoy Spring Break with your family! Sincerely, Shawna Thompson

A note from Mrs. Combs, our amazing counselor... Hello Jarman Families, State testing begins for third through fifth graders in April. Tests can provoke some anxiety and stress in students. It’s important to find ways to relieve these stresses. Please take some time to talk to your child about ways to relieve stress. Various stress relievers include talking to others, journaling or writing down thoughts, drawing, sports, or even playing a game. There are several ways to help children prepare their minds and bodies for test taking. First, drink lots of water. The brain is made of up to 90% water. Hydration loss can lead to a decline in mental functions. Second, go to bed early the night before. Children need at least ten hours of sleep. Sleep deprived people score 30% lower on memory tests. Third, eat a healthy breakfast before the test. Breakfast should include high protein foods and low carbs/sugary food. Lastly, remind your child to stay positive. Help them with self-affirmations such as telling themselves “I will do great; I can do this; I am the best test taker”. On another note, I continue to visit third classes to complete Steps to Respect. Steps to Respect is a bully prevention program to decrease bullying and establish a safe, caring, and respectful school climate. The students appear to really enjoy the role playing on joining a group and making friends. We are about mid-way through the program and should finish at the end of March. Recent lessons have included: joining a group, evaluating possible responses to use when joining efforts don’t work, identifying bullying, and standing up for yourself by being assertive. I have attached the second family letter that accompanies the Steps to Respect curriculum. I enjoy being with your kids each day and look forward to seeing their smiles as they enter the door. As always, if you have any concerns or if there is anything I can assist with, please do not hesitate to contact me at (918) 357-8981. Sincerely, Carrie Combs, LCSW
Ms. Taylor, our magnificent art teacher, is in need of baby wipes, markers, black sharpies, and watercolors. All donated items are appreciated and help our students create their masterpieces!
From our wonderful school nurse… ATTENTION PARENTS OF CURRENT PRE-K STUDENTS
When your child moves up to kindergarten, he/she will need a set of immunization boosters. Each child will need a DPT#5, Polio #4, and MMR #2 before kindergarten starts on August 22. Your child may have already received these immunizations in the past year. If so, please bring the updated shot record to school as soon as possible. The nurse will make a copy for your child’s file. Thank you, Nurse Garner
Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers at Jarman. Each one of our volunteers make a difference in making Jarman better at serving our families-from the safety of the parking lot, helping hands behind the classroom scene, library, donations, reading to students, everything! We value your support!
