From the Desk of Fr. Pat
Desde el Escritorio de P. Pat
As we begin this year focusing on our call to holiness, this month of January is filled with examples of saints of our Salesian family! On January 8th, we celebrated the feast of Blessed Titus Zeman, a Salesian priest from Slovakia. He was captured by the communist and tortured for helping young seminarians escape into free Europe to continue their studies for the priesthood. He died in 1951 as a martyr. On January 15th, we celebrated the feast of Blessed Luigi Variara, a young Salesian missionary who left his homeland of Italy and his family to go to work with the lepers in Agua de Dios, Columbia. He was just 48 years old when he died in 1923. He also founded a congregation of Sisters, The Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, to care for the sick and who work in many places in the world today. On January 22nd, we celebrate the feast of Blessed Laura Vicuña, a young Chilean girl who studied with the Salesian Sisters. Laura offered her life for the conversion of her mother. She was only 12 years old when she died in 1904 in Argentina. On January 31st, we celebrate the feast of our father, founder, friend and patron, Don Bosco. Don Bosco gave his life totally and completely for the young; he died in 1888 at age 72 of exhaustion from work! Here, in the parish, we will celebrate his feast next weekend with our Youth Rally on Saturday and our Sunday celebrations. We will also have our Triduum and sermons in preparation for his feast. On January 24th, we will celebrate the feast of St. Francis de Sales. Don Bosco chose him as our patron because of his reputation for kindness, charity, patience and simple goodness— virtues which Don Bosco believed to be most important if you are working with the young. It is from him, we Salesians get our name: Society of St. Francis de Sales. Each of these persons are great saints. Each is very different. Each lived at a different time, in a different place with a different mission. Yet, each was rooted in the “Salesian Spirit”. How can we understand that spirit and how can we root ourselves in it? At the top of all the letters and papers he wrote, St. Francis de Sales would write the words Live Jesus! For him, and for every person who follows his spirituality, it means the name of Jesus is engraved on one’s heart and in one’s mind. As one writer puts it: It was to allow that name to become one’s own true name, to allow one’s entire self— body, thoughts, affections, actions, decisions, work, devotion— to be animated by the reality of the person known by that name. To allow Jesus to live one did not simply learn about Jesus or pray to Jesus or even imitate Jesus. One surrendered the vital center of one’s being— one’s heart, as understood in the wholistic biblical sense— to another living presence. The Pauline dictum “I no longer live but Christ lives in me is at the core of the distinctive Salesian inscription.” To be “Salesian” means to be rooted in one’s baptism and so strive to live each day— in the ordinary daily duties of every day life— as Jesus Himself would live. To be Salesian means to Live Jesus! As we approach the Feast of Don Bosco we ask him, in a special way, to help us live more like Jesus in our relationships with God and with one another as the road to holiness! Live Jesus! God bless you!
VIVA JESUS! Que Deus te abençoe!

Welcome Home, Father Tim Ploch!!
From January 31st to February 4th, our parish will have with us , Fr. Tim Ploch, who, in the name of the Salesian Rector Major, will be making the extraordinary Canonical Visitation of our Salesian mission in Port Chester. Fr. Tim will be spending 4 months in our province visiting every local Salesian Community— ours will be the first!! Fr. Tim, who served as pastor of Holy Rosary for nine years, is certainly no stranger to many of us and we all welcome him home! Tim was born in 1946 in Paterson, NJ. He says that he was born with Salesian spirit in his blood because the Salesian Sisters raised his mother, Dolores, who was an orphan. Tim entered Don Bosco Juniorate in Haverstraw in 1960. The Juniorate moved the following year to Goshen, NY, and became Salesian Junior Seminary, when Tim graduated in 1964. he entered the novitiate in Newton, NJ, that fall and made his first profession on Aug. 16, 1965. He did his practical training at the Salesian High School in Cedar Lake, Ind. (1969-1972), followed by theological studies at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, from 1972 to 1976, where he earned a master’s degree in theology. He was ordained in Westerville, Ohio, in 1976. Fr. Tim’s Salesian Priestly ministry has taken him to Salesian Junior Seminary in Goshen as principal (1976-1981), Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, NJ, as principal (1981-1985), Salesian Center in Columbus as director of the students of theology and Salesian Boys & Girls Club 91985-1991). From 1991 to 1997 he served as Provincial Superior for the eastern Province of the United States. After his term as U.S. East provincial, he had a sabbatical in Guadalajara, Mexico, to improve his Spanish. On his return to the province in 1998, he served as coordinator of campus ministry at LaSalle HS in Miami (1998-1999) and then was named pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Port Chester, NY, and director of the Salesian community in that village (also including Corpus Christi Parish). He remained in Port Chester until 2009 when he was appointed Provincial Superior of the Western Province of the United States. In 2014, he was elected to the Salesian General Council in Rome as the Regional Counselor for the International Region, which encompasses the 2 U.S. provinces and the provinces of Mexico (2), Central America, the Antilles, Haiti, Colombia (2), Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
