Desde el Escritorio de P. Pat

Today we are celebrating the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. It is a feast that calls us to focus on the importance of the “First Sacrament”— The Sacrament by which we are incorporated into the Body of Christ and become members of His Church. Certainly, there is so much that can be said about this feast and about the Sacrament of Baptism. Today, just two weeks into the New Year 2019, I would like to focus on just one of these points. Bannered on the front of our bulletin are the words of our Rector Major to the Salesian Family: Holiness for you too! We are called to be holy— to become saints. Sometimes it seems to me like we don’t speak of Vatican II very much anymore, yet, we know, the riches of the great Council are continually be discovered. The Universal Call to Holiness is expressed and taught clearly in Chapter 5 of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium. It teaches clearly that the universal call to holiness is rooted in Baptism and in the Pascal mystery, which configures a person to Jesus. Through Baptism you and I are missioned to be “another Jesus” in our world! Through the mystery of grace and the indwelling of the Blessed Trinity, which we received on the day of our baptism, God’s DNA flows in our bodies! We are God’s daughters and sons and are called to live as His children. To live as His child, means to grow in holiness of life. Through Baptism, “all the faithful of Christ… are called to the fulness of the Christian life and to the perfection of Charity.” (L.G. #40) This month, on January 24th, we will celebrate the feast of St. Francis de Sales (the patron saint of Don Bosco’s Salesians— from him, Don Bosco gave us our name!) St. Francis de Sales is one of the most quoted persons in the Second Vatican Council. The great insight and teaching that he gave: regardless of our position or state of life, every one of us is called to holiness! Soldiers, husbands, wives, young, old, sick, healthy, rich, poor, educated, illiterate— every one is called to holiness by faithfully living his/her state of life in imitation of Jesus. We do this by “… following in His footsteps” and “… conforming ourselves to his image seeking the will of the Father in all things.” All this means is that wherever I am or whatever I am doing, I am trying my best to be the best husband, wife, mother, father, soldier, teacher, son, daughter, student, etc. that I can be! Doing whatever it is I must do and trying to do it the best I can. This way finds its expression in Charity— loving the way Jesus teaches me to love giving myself in service to my sisters and brothers especially the poorer ones— in whatever form that poverty may take. I am called to truly live the Spiritual and Corporal works of Mercy! This is holiness in practice. As we go through this year, we will try to focus on some saints. The saints, our sisters and brothers already with the Father in heaven, continually offer us a challenge to holiness. Everyone of them, like everyone of us, was a sinner. And the challenge simple just is: “if he/she did it, why can’t I?” The great Archbishop Sheen used to say “One step beyond mediocrity and we are all saints!” Baptism gives us both the grace and the mission to take that step! As we receive our bottle of holy water today, reminding us of our Baptism, each time we use it and trace ourselves with the Sign of the Cross, may it be a continual reminder to us, that through Baptism, we too are called to holiness! God bless you!
