The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. The Institute welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists every year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 10 other countries. Research Scientist (m/f) SMALL-ANGLE NEUTRON SCATTERING (SANS) The Large-Scale Structures (LSS) Group operates a range of instruments designed to investigate the structure of matter on a scale of one to hundreds of nanometers. These include instruments for small-angle scattering, reflectometry and diffraction from single crystals or one or two-dimensionally ordered materials. The range of science covered is very broad, from polymer and colloid science through structural molecular biology to materials science and magnetic phenomena. The group benefits largely from in-house support for sample preparation and characterisation, including a deuteration laboratory, soft matter characterisation facilities and conventional chemistry laboratories. Moreover, the ILL is located on a major scientific campus offering access to many other technical resources. This is a post within the LSS Group in the field of small-angle scattering. In addition to carrying out your own active research programme on bio-related systems, you will be involved in the following activities: • co-managing the D11 diffractometer: day-to-day running and technical development • providing support to users for scientific experiments, and helping them collect data under optimum conditions • promoting scientific partnerships in your field of research • participating in the longer-term development of SANS instrumentation, sample environment and data analysis techniques, particularly in the biophysics and life science fields • maintaining the high publication output of the instrument. The D11 small-angle diffractometer is a world-leading instrument serving a variety of scientific fields including soft matter, biology and condensed matter physics. The instrument is constantly being improved for soft condensed matter and biological research and offers a wide variety of possible sample environments.

Qualifications/Experience : PhD in physics, biophysics or physical chemistry, or equivalent. We are particularly interested in highly motivated candidates with experience in small-angle scattering and biological systems. They must be keen to carry out personal research and contribute to the scientific environment of the LSS group and life science research at the ILL. Computing skills and a general interest in software development would be an advantage, as would experience in the physical measurement of biological systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a young post-doctoral scientist to develop expertise, broaden his/her experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more experienced scientists on secondment from their home institute will also be considered.

Language skills : As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
