FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT COSTS DOES THE FELLOWSHIP COVER? The Ignite LA Student Science Program covers all costs associated with your child’s participation on the program. The fellowship covers all expedition costs, which includes accommodation, meals, transportation, recreational day activities, airfare, baggage fee, and some incidentals. In order to cover incidental expenses, please have your child check in with his or her program coordinator before incurring these expenses.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHEDULING AIRFARE, TRANSPORTATION, AND ACCOMMODATIONS FOR MY CHILD? Earthwatch will schedule all the logistics for your child’s trip. The program coordinator will book airfare for your child, taking into consideration project arrival and departure requirements. Earthwatch has coordinated all the logistics for the trip with the Scientist who will host your child’s team (accommodation, meals, transportation, sleeping arrangements, etc.).

WHAT EXPENSES ARE MY RESPONSIBILITY AS A PARENT FOR THE PROGRAM? WILL I RECEIVE A REIMBURSEMENT? Parents are responsible for procuring proper field clothing and footwear for your child’s participation on the program. We also ask parents to pay for the fee of checked luggage. Earthwatch will reimburse you for these expenses. Before purchasing clothing and footwear, please check in with your program coordinator as some restrictions may apply.

WILL MY CHILD TRAVEL ALONE? WHO WILL ACCOMPANY MY CHILD? Your child will travel with his or her team. Each team consists of 8 to 10 students from 15 to 18 years old. When possible, we try to have a chaperone join the flight. At the airport, your child will receive assistance from our LA based coordinator, who will help your child check in and answer any last minute questions. The coordinator will walk them to the TSA check point and depart after their flight has taken off.

WHO WILL ACCOMPANY MY CHILD DURING THE PROGRAM? Your child will be hosted by Ph.D. Scientist, their field assistants, and a facilitator (chaperone). Usually, each team will have approximately 3 to 5 adults accompanying your child’s group. These individuals have gone through a thorough screening and vetting process, and training to prepare them to host teen groups.

WILL I BE ABLE TO CONTACT MY CHILD WHEN THEY ARE ON THE EXPEDITION? Earthwatch staff will ensure that your child contacts you once he/she has safely arrived at the destination airport. Although communication with your child will be limited throughout the expedition, in some cases your child will be allowed to contact you during their free time. Please see the schedule of activities in the briefings to see where applicable. Please keep in mind that many research sites have limited Internet access and no cellphone reception, so this is a great opportunity for your child to be fully immersed in a new experience and new environment! WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD PACK FOR THE EXPEDITION? WHAT WILL MY CHILD NEED? Your child will receive an expedition briefing that contains a detailed packing list. The list includes required and optional items, we ask that you support your child and pack all the required items as these are essential materials to ensure a successful participation on the expedition.

WILL THERE BE LAUNDRY AVAILABLE FOR MY CHILD TO USE? Some of the locations have laundry that can be used during the team. However, usually we limit laundry use to once a week, so please ensure that your child has plenty of clothing to last them one week. We also advise that you purchase quick drying clothing so that if they want to wash it by hand, it will be ready the next day, once we leave it to air dry.

MY CHILD HAS ALLERGIES. HOW WILL YOU ACCOMMODATE FOR ALLERGIES? WHAT PRECAUTIONS FO YOU TAKE TO PREVENT ALLERGY EXPOSURE? Each participant received a participation form that needs to be filled out with medical information including allergies, asthmas, and primary care contact information. These forms are shared with our scientists who then ensure all the staff, including cooks, is aware of the allergy and we ensure to not expose the child to the triggers. We cannot guarantee that we can eliminate all the risks, and for this reason, we ask that you pack Epi-Pens with your child’s luggage and have your child inform the team where he or she keeps the Epi-Pens, in case of emergency.

PREGUNTAS FRECUENTAS ¿QUE COSTOS CUBRE LA BECA? El Programa de Ignite cubre todos los costos relacionados con la participación de su hijo en este programa. ¿QUÉ GASTOS SON MI RESPONSABILIDAD COMO UN PADRE? ¿RECIBIRÉ UN REEMBOLSO? Padres son responsables de obtener la ropa y los zapatos apropiados para el campo. ¿MI HIJO VIAJARÁ SOLO? ¿QUIEN ACOMPAÑARÁ MI HIJO? Su hijo viajara con su equipo. Cada equipo tiene 8 a 10 estudiantes de la edad de 15-18 años. Si es posible, el chaperón viajara con el equipo. Nuestra coordinadora de LA estará en el aeropuerto para darle asistencia al hijo de Ud., contestar sus preguntas, y le ayudara con check-in por su vuelo. La coordinadora caminara con el hijo de Ud. al seguridad del aeropuerto y ella saldrá después de la salida del vuelo de su hijo.

¿QUIÉN ACOMPAÑARA MI HIJO DURANTE EL PROGRAMA? Un científico con un doctorado, su asistente de campo, y un facilitador (chaperón) alojaran a su hijo. Usualmente, Habrá 3 a 5 adultos por cada equipo. Estos adultos han pasado un proceso de selección rigurosa y capacitaciones para preparar para equipos de adolescentes.

¿PONDRÉ CONTACTAR A MI HIJO DURANTE LA EXPEDICIÓN? Earthwatch asegurara que su hijo le contacta a Ud. cuando él/ella ha llegada sin peligro al aeropuerto de destino. El comunicación de Ud. con su hijo será limitado durante la expedición, PERO, en algunos casos su hijo pondrá contactarle durante su tiempo libre. Por favor, tenga en cuenta que muchos sitios de estudios tienen acceso limitado al internet y no hay señal de teléfono de móvil. ¡Por eso, es una oportunidad para su hijo este completamente inmerso en una experiencia nueva! ¿QUE DEBE EMPACAR MI HIJO POR EL EXPEDICIÓN? ¿QUE NECESITARA? El hijo de Ud. recibiré la información completa de la expedición, cual incluye una lista de empaque. Esta lista incluye cosas necesarias y opcionales. Preguntamos qué Ud. apoya su hijo a empaca todas las cosas necesarias, porque estas cosas son materiales esenciales para hacer seguro un participación exitosa en el expedición.

¿HABRÁ LAVANDERÍA DISPONIBLE PARA EL USO DE MI HIJO? Algunos de los sitios tienen lavandería cual el grupo puede usar. Usualmente limitamos el uso de lavandería a una vez cada semana. Por eso, por favor, asegúrese que su hijo tiene ropa suficiente para una semana. También, recomendamos que Ud. compra ropa que seca rápidamente pues será seca el próxima día.

MI HIJO TIENE ALERGIAS. ¿CÓMO UD. VA A ACOMODAR PARA LAS ALERGIAS? ¿CUÁL PRECAUCIONES VA A TOMAR PARA EVITAR EXPOSICIÓN A ALÉRGENOS? Cada participante recibí un formulario de participación que él/ella necesita completar con información de salud como alergias, asmas, e información de contacto de su doctor. Compartimos estos formularios con los científicos quien asegura que todos los personales y cocineros saben esta información. No podemos asegurar que eliminar todos los riesgos, y por esta razón, preguntamos qué empaca Epi-Pens en el equipaje de su hijo. También, en el caso de emergencia, su hijo debe compartir la ubicación de sus Epi-Pens con los científicos y facilitadores.
