All Dishwashers Phosphate-Free Dishwasher Detergents May Cause White Film

Consumers have noticed a white film or residue on their dishes, glassware, plastic items, utensils and tub interior. RESPONSE: The problem is likely not the dishwasher’s cleaning performance, but may be hard water or phosphate-free detergents. As of July 1, 2010 seventeen States* passed laws limiting the amount of phosphorous (phosphates) in household dishwasher detergents to no more than 0.5 percent. Previous detergents contained up to 8.7 percent. As a result, major manufacturers have reformulated their dishwasher cleaning products. *States include Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

WHAT ARE PHOSPHATES? Phosphates are mineral additives in detergents that act as the main cleaning agent helping remove stains, break down grease and reduce spotting. During washing, phosphates suspend food particles so they don’t stick to dishes. Plus, they soften water allowing suds to form for cleaning. DID YOU KNOW: Phosphates have been limited in laundry detergents since 1994. The change in dishwasher detergents is another step in the eco-conscious awareness found in today’s products and the eco-friendly choices consumers are making.

ACTION: Anytime you receive a service call of a dishwasher not cleaning dishes well, you should thoroughly check the dishwasher operation, ruling out any mechanical or electrical failures. Some possible dishwasher failures could include, but not be limited to, the following: not filling with enough water, open heater element, open high limit thermostat, loose wire connections, not spraying water effectively, intermittent water valve operation, detergent door not opening or rinse agent not dispensing. If the dishwasher operation tests OK, check for proper Use and Care; incoming water temperature below 120°F, excessively hard or soft water, improper loading, outdated detergent, incorrect amount of detergent and/or empty rinse agent dispenser. Only after testing of the dishwasher is complete and you have confirmed that proper use and care techniques are in use, suggest to the customer that they try another form or brand of detergent. Los consumidores han notado una película o reciduo blanca en sus platos, utensilios de vidrio, artículos de plástico, utensilios y el interior de la tina.

RESPUESTA: El problema probablemente no esté relacionado con el desempeño de la lavavajillas, sino que puede deberse al agua dura o los detergentes que no contienen fosfato. A partir del 1° de julio de 2010, diecisiete estados* aprobaron leyes que limitan la cantidad de fósforo (fosfatos) en los detergentes para lavavajillas domésticas a no más de 0,5 por ciento. Los detergentes anteriores contienen hasta 8,7 por ciento. Por ende, los principales fabricantes han reformulado sus productos de limpieza para lavavajillas. *Los estados incluyen Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nuevo Hampshire, Nueva York, Ohio, Oregón, Pensilvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington y Wisconsin.

¿QUÉ SON LOS FOSFATOS? Los fosfatos son aditivos minerales en detergentes que actúan como el agente principal de limpieza que ayuda a reducir y quitar manchas y descomponer la grasa. Durante el lavado, los fosfatos suspenden las partículas de los alimentos de modo que no se peguen a la vajilla. Además ablandan el agua, lo que permite que se haga espuma para la limpieza.

SABÍA USTED QUE: Se ha limitado la cantidad de fosfatos en los detergentes para lavandería desde el año 1994. El cambio en los detergentes para lavavajillas es el siguiente paso de la conciencia ecológica, el cual es evidente en los productos actuales y en las decisiones ecológicas de los consumidores.

ACCIÓN: En cualquier momento que reciba una llamada de servicio sobre una lavavajillas que no limpie bien la vajilla, deberá controlar rigurosamente el funcionamiento de la lavavajillas para descartar cualquier falla mecánica o eléctrica. Algunas posibles fallas de la lavavajillas incluyen, pero sin limitación, lo siguiente: No se llena con suficiente agua, el elemento del calentador está abierto, el termostato de límite alto está abierto, las conexiones de alambres están flojas, no rocía el agua apropiadamente, un funcionamiento intermitente de la válvula de agua, la tapa del detergente no se abre o no se distribuye el agente de enjuague. Si el funcionamiento de la lavavajillas está BIEN, revise que la lavavajillas goce de un uso y cuidado apropiados; si la temperatura del agua de entrada está por debajo de 120 °F, si hay agua excesivamente suave o dura, si no se ha cargado apropiadamente, si el detergente está viejo, si se usó la cantidad equivocada de detergente y/o el depósito del agente de enjuague está vacío. Solamente después de haber realizado las pruebas de la lavavajillas y una vez que haya confirmado que se practican las técnicas adecuadas de uso y cuidado, recomiende al cliente que pruebe otro tipo o marca de detergente. Según la revista de consumidores más destacada, los siguientes son los 4 productos, entre los 24 analizados, que no contienen o contienen la menor cantidad de fosfato:
