PROLOGUE To look at the wine. To reflect upon it. To think about it. To feel it. To capture it. That is “Eye on Wine”, the work presented here by the American photographer Sara Matthews. A selection of pictures from her 20 years’ experience behind the lens in which the author has toured the major wine regions of the world —from Argentina to France from the U.S. to Chile.

Una selección fotográfica de sus 20 años de experiencias detrás del objetivo en los que la autora ha recorrido las principales zonas vitivinícolas del mundo; desde Argentina a Francia pasando por EEUU o Chile.

DECLARACIÓN DE LA ARTISTA “El vino en su mejor momento atrapa algo real: la tierra, el clima, la uva y el arte del enólogo. Quiero que mis fotografías hagan lo mismo. Es decir, dar protagonismo a la luz natural, evitar trucos estilísticos y comprometerse sinceramente con lo real. Llevo 28 años fotografiando zonas vinícolas de todo el mundo, aprendiendo continuamente de los viticultores y enólogos. Al principio, mi carrera se centraba en aspectos documentales: la belleza convencional de los viñedos y las bodegas. Con el tiempo, he adquirido un conocimiento más profundo del tema, he desarrollado mi propia manera de observar el mundo del vino. Vi la belleza de los elementos abstractos y formales: contraste, flujo, ritmo y patrón. Confío en mis instintos visuales e intento rebajar la imagen hasta su esencia visual o emocional. Es como una edición en acción. No puedo crear esta esencia. Tengo que encontrarla. Salgo de safari a la caza de imágenes, persiguiendo la belleza de la luz, a menudo de madrugada, antes de que amanezca sobre los viñedos. Camino mucho para estudiar todos los ángulos posibles de mis temas, a veces busco perspectivas más elevadas subiéndome al techo de un coche, colgándome en una carretilla elevadora o subiendo a un helicóptero. Estudié arquitectura en Georgia Tech, lo que me ha ayudado a educar la mirada en términos de composición, color, luz y sombras. He aprendido de otros fotógrafos, también; especialmente de Eugene Atget, Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams y Edward Weston. Revelaban la belleza esencial de sus temas aplicando una rigurosa honestidad a su fotografía. Trato de acercarme al mundo del vino con la misma pasión y respeto”.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT “Wine at its best captures something real: the land, the climate, the grapes and the winemaker’s craft. I want my photographs to do the same. That means an emphasis on natural light, an avoidance of stylistic tricks, and an honest engagement with the real thing. I’ve been photographing wine regions around the world for 28 years, continually learning from dedicated vineyard managers and winemakers. My early career focused on the documentary aspects of the work— the conventional beauty of vineyards and wineries. Over time, and with a deeper understanding of the subject, I developed my own way of looking at the world of wine. I saw the beauty in abstract, formal elements: contrast, flow, rhythm and pattern. Trusting my visual instincts, I attempt to pare the image down to its essential visual or emotional essence. I think of this as editing in action. I can’t create this essence; I have to find it. I am on safari for images, chasing after the beautiful light, often in the twilight before dawn in the vineyard. I do a lot of walking to study every possible angle of my subjects, sometimes seeking a higher perspective by climbing on the roof of a car, hanging onto a rising forklift or strapping into a helicopter. I studied architecture at Georgia Tech, which helped train my eye in composition, color, light and shadow. I’ve learned from other photographers, too, especially Eugene Atget, Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, and Edward Weston. They revealed the essential beauty of their subjects through a rigorous honesty in their photography. I try to approach the world of wine with the same passion and respect.”

SOBRE LA FOTÓGRAFA Sara Matthews recorre las zonas vitivinícolas del mundo, fotografiando viñedos, bodegas, enólogos y comunidades vinícolas. Vive en Brooklyn, Nueva York, pero su trabajo le ha llevado por todos los Estados Unidos, Argentina, Chile, Francia, Italia, España, y cualquier otro lugar donde se haga vino. El sector del vino recaba su visión artística y utiliza sus fotografías para publicidad, marketing y relaciones públicas. Sus trabajos han aparecido en prestigiosas revistas, periódicos, libros y exposiciones de todo el mundo. Sara comenzó su trabajo como fotógrafa de vino en 1986, cuando ella y su esposo, Thomas Matthews, se mudaron desde Nueva York a un pequeño pueblo vinícola próximo a Burdeos, Francia. Su libro, A Village in the vineyards, fue publicado por Farrar, Straus y Giroux en 1993. ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER Sara Matthews covers the wine regions of the world, photographing vineyards, wineries, winemakers, and wine communities. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, but her work includes assignments throughout the United States, Argentina, Chile, France, Italy, Spain, and anywhere wine is made. The wine industry seeks out her artistic eye and uses her photographs for advertising, marketing, and public relations. Her work has appeared in major magazines, newspapers, books, and exhibitions worldwide. Sara started her work as a wine photographer in 1986, when she and her husband, Thomas Matthews, moved from New York City to a small wine village near Bordeaux, France. Their book, A Village in the Vineyards, was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1993. Since then, she has done seven more books, including Mendoza, Our Terroir, Chile: The Art of Wine, Washington: The State of Wine, and The Carmenere Wines of Chile. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Sara earned a bachelors degree in architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She spent her senior year studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 2011 she received her Certificate in Horticulture from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which deepened her understanding of viticulture around the world.
