If you happen to take a Sunday stroll on the bridge between Harajuku Station and the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, in the midst of this river of people you might notice Victorian living dolls, blood-spattered nurses and aliens. Maybe you would put this down to the puffer fish you had with your lunchtime sushi - if incorrectly prepared, it can be hallucinogenic, or even fatal. Rest assured, it’s nothing to do with your meal - these aren’t hallucinations, you’re not about to die! What you’re looking at is just fashionable Japanese teenagers on their home ground, the district of Harajuku. In some ways Harajuku is reminiscent of London’s Carnaby Street and the King’s Road during the swinging sixties, with the clothes shops and the groups of trendy youngsters that fill the square, but there’s a big difference between this scene and the London of Austin Powers. The sixties youthquake was all about a way of life, a rebellion, a political viewpoint, while the Japanese version sees fashion as an end in itself. Fashion is everything. To make things clearer, let’s take a step back in time. Tokio. Si un domingo se os ocurre dar un paseo dominical por el puente entre la estación de Harajuku y el santuario Meiji, en medio del río de gente podréis advertir muñecas victorianas vivas, enfermeras sangrientas, criaturas alienígenas. No penséis en el sushi que comisteis en el almuerzo, o en el hecho de que el pez globo es alucinógeno o incluso mortal si se corta mal. Estad tranquilos, no tiene nada que ver con el sushi, ni estáis viendo visiones, y no os estáis muriendo. Lo que veis son sólo adolescentes japoneses vistiendo a la moda y éste es su barrio: Harajuku. Un distrito que por su bullicio recuerda en algunos aspectos al Carnaby Street y King’s Road del Londres de los años 60. El parecido existe si se piensa en las tiendas de ropa, en las cuadrillas que llenan la plaza, pero hay una diferencia sustancial entre ésta y aquella escena histórica. Mientras en el caso inglés la moda estaba vinculada a un estilo de vida, a la rebelión, al pensamiento político, en el ejemplo japonés la moda es un fin en sí mismo. La moda lo es todo. Para comprender mejor este concepto debemos remontarnos un poco en el tiempo.
