Dear United Independent School District Parents/Guardians:

t is an honor to present you with this final edition of UISD’s 2016-2017 Parent Connection. Our mission is to keep the community informed of the District’s latest initiatives, while highlighting the accomplishments of our students. In this issue, you will find the latest information about the District’s bond construction program, our summer school programs and other activities that have occurred over the course of this school year. I am very proud of the advancements that we have made as a school district, thanks to our employees and teachers. I am also in admiration of our students, who continue to excel in academics and extra-curricular activities. It was an honor to attend last week’s commencement ceremonies for all four of our high schools. I heartily congratulate our Class of 2017 graduates. Their rite of academic passage is a milestone that we, as an educational family, are very proud of. On behalf of the UISD Board of Trustees, I would like to thank our parents and families for working with us to give our students the best possible education. Last but not least, I thank our employees for contributing to the success of not only our students, but to our District and community as well. In the instructional area, UISD continues to provide all students with an excellent public school education. Our teachers have remained dedicated to making sure that our students are well-prepared for the STAAR and End of Course assessments. Additionally, we continue to enhance our instructional program by providing our teachers and staff members with supplemental training. I am very pleased to announce that the second phase of our bond construction program continues to make progress. Our newest campuses (Freedom Elementary, United South High School and United High School 9th Grade), are near completion, and will be ready for the installation of equipment and furniture this summer. These beautiful new campuses will be prepared to welcome students by August 2017.

attending Military Academies DIEGO Mendez

TO ATTEND THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

John B. Alexander High School Senior Diego Mendez will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado following his graduation this year. Mendez expressed the great enthusiasm he feels in being given an opportunity to serve his country. "I have always had the desire to answer the call of duty, and I also hope to become a neurosurgeon in the future,” said Mendez, who hopes to gain admission to the Uniformed Services University in Health Sciences. The U.S. Federal government in Bethesda, Maryland operates the Health Science University. "I used to watch medical shows on the Discovery channel from the time I was a young boy and the programs got me to start thinking about health sciences and becoming a doctor. I have maintained a high G.P.A., and I must do well on the MCAT assessment exam to see it through," he continued. Mendez is vice-president of the National Honor Society at his campus, and has been enrolled in the Alexander High School Health Science Magnet School since his freshman year. He is currently certified as a dental assistant, administrator of C.P.R., and trained to use a defibrillator. Mendez looks forward to the future and thanks his parents, Ricardo and Delia Mendez, for their encouragement and support. "I am looking forward to serving my country and the exciting challenges ahead," he concluded.

TO ATTEND THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL

John B. Alexander High School Senior Andrea “Andie” Celeste Martinez will be attending The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS). NAPS is the preparatory school for the United States Naval Academy located in Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island.

“Andie,” as she is known, expresses her excitement to be attending an institution she has invested countless hours preparing for. “I feel blessed, overwhelmed, and I am in shock. The idea of attending the academy has filled me with enthusiasm and I am ready to begin in July,” says Martinez. Martinez is no stranger to leadership as she currently holds the highest title as Captain of the AHS Dazzler Dance and Drill Team. In addition, Andie has accrued many hours of school and community involvement, such as initiating the first and only Key Club Chapter in Laredo. She participates in prestigious organizations such as the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee, National Honor Society, BETA Club, and student government. Martinez is also involved within the community by organizing charity events such as toy drives, Jeans for Teens, and volunteers for organizations like LAPs and The Regent Nursing Community Home. 4

Gonzalez has expressed excitement and eagerness to begin her career in the military. Gonzalez wants to be an aviation pilot and believes that the training she will be receiving, starting in June, will further her abilities in reaching this career goal. Gonzalez comes from a family with military background. Her uncle attended the Naval Academy and her brother, Jerry Gonzalez, currently serves with the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets in College Station, Texas.

Gonzalez, is ranked #20 out of 632 students graduating from AHS in June and maintains a G.P.A. of 4.17. She believes that her extracurricular and community activities played a huge role in being accepted in the Naval Academy. Christina formed part of the Lady Bulldog Volleyball Team as a star player. She is a student in the Health Science Magnet School and is involved in premier organizations like the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. In addition, she is the vice-president of H.O.S.A., a registered dental assistant, and is certified in C.P.R & First Aid. Gonzalez also participates in community service. Gonzalez acknowledges that she would not be here today without the endless love and support from her coaching staff, friends, family and school staff. She extends her gratitude to her parents, Yvonne and Gerardo Gonzalez; grandmother, Argelia Ochoa; and siblings Jerry, Eliana, and Isaac Gonzalez.

TO ATTEND THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL

United High School (UHS), senior Gabriel H. Acosta II will attend the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located on Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. Acosta, who is enrolled in the Science Engineering Magnet School at UHS, is focused on becoming a naval aviator and expert in military law. Acosta's background is that of an excellent student with 1,000 community service hours to his credit. This aspiring young man is also active in multiple organizations including the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee, National Honor Society and Student Council. Moreover, he has spent many hours participating in extracurricular activities at UHS. Acosta also created the United Fitness “U-Fit” program at his campus, for which he served as its President for three years. The program advocates for better health among students and staff by promoting healthy lifestyle choices and habits. U-Fit also hosts fundraisers to benefit other UHS clubs and organizations. Acosta is the son of Assistant Chief Patrol Agent, Gabriel and Veronica Acosta who along with his sister, Talisa Acosta, reside in Laredo.

Myrtha Villarreal named H-E-B’s 2017 Statewide

ELEMENTARY Principal of the Year

nited ISD is proud to announce that Col. Santos Benavides Principal, Dr. Myrtha Villarreal has been named Statewide “Elementary Principal of the Year” for the 2017 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards Program. The formal announcement was made on May 9th at the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards Program ceremony held in Austin.

Dr. Villarreal has been an educator for 26 years and an employee of United ISD for 22 years. She has been a principal at Col. Santos Benavides for a total of 18 years. Her educational background includes a Bachelor's degree from Texas State University with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Political Science, Master's degree from Texas A & M University in Educational Administration, she also holds a Doctorate degree from Texas A & M Corpus Christi and Kingsville in Educational Leadership. It is Dr. Villarreal’s belief that each and every child has the potential to bring something special and unique to the world. “My role as an educator is to help develop their potential and assist them in discovering who they are so they can express their own opinions and nurture their own ideas. I believe it is important to challenge children everyday by having them engage in activities that promote higher order thinking such as problem solving, reasoning, creating, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. As children partake in these types of activities it builds their independence and as such they are free to explore the world and reach their full potential,” said Dr. Villarreal. Dr. Villarreal was presented with an award from H-E-B and received $10,000 for herself and a $25,000 grant for the school.

TOP WINNERS at 29th Annual U

DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR

nited ISD hosted its 29th Annual District Science Fair at the Student Activity Complex on February 24, 2017. Over 200 United ISD middle and high school students competed for awards in four categories: Behavioral and Social Science; Biological, Medical, Biochemical, and Health; Chemistry, Environmental, and Earth Science; and Space Physics, Engineering and Computers. District and community judges reviewed projects and final results were revealed during a formal ceremony. The top middle school winners were as follows: Grand Champion: Patricio Riddle, United Middle School “Cleaning Up Oil Spills with Nano Technology” Reserve Grand Champion: Liu Yanning, Trautmann Middle School “Dimmer and Dimmer”

In addition to the announcement of the event's top honors, 24 special awards were given out to students from the District’s four high schools. Lucy Gonzalez, United ISD Secondary Science Coordinator, stated that the projects were impressive and the event was a great success, as over 50 community members assisted in the judging process. Also on April 1, 2017, five students from United I.S.D. competed at the State Science and Engineering Fair held in San Antonio. Each presented their science projects dealing with behavioral, engineering, environmental and animal studies.

On February 24th 2017 Carlos Mendez, from United High School competed at the 29th Annual United ISD District Science Fair with his project “Avionic Engine Supremacy” which involved modifying a jet engine. He was awarded District Grand Champion. On April 1st, 2017 Carlos Mendez took his project to compete at the State Science and Engineering Fair at the San Antonio Convention Center. Carlos was awarded the Naval Academy Special Award in Engineering, the first student from Laredo to receive an award at the state level. On May 7-12, 2017 Carlos competed at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California. On May 18th, Carlos was awarded the 4th award of $500.00 for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The “AIAA Look Up!” Award celebrates exceptional High-School level research to encourage further study into aerospace.

he 2017 Special Olympics Texas Area 21 Spring Games kicked off at UISD’s SAC on the morning of April 25. Approximately 900 athletes from UISD, LISD, and area school districts participated in the opening ceremonies. The event started with the traditional promenade of the special athletes representing their campuses. The presentation of colors was executed by the United South High School (USHS), Marine Corps JROTC, under Master Sergeant Joselito Tijerina. The USHS band performed the National Anthem under the direction of Francisco J. Sosa, and dance

performances by the vibrant USHS Silver Steppers and Cheerleaders under the direction of Maria Cordelia Solis, were enjoyed by all. Following a one lap run of the Olympic torch by local, district and area law enforcement volunteers, UISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos lit the official Olympic flame with UISD’s High School Athletes of the Year, Emanuel Saucedo from United South High School and Leslie Blanco from Lyndon B. Johnson High School. Special thanks to all UISD employees and students who assisted the athletes and their schools.

SPELLING BEE

E

manuel Rimocal, 4th grader at Kennedy-Zapata Elementary was named the city-wide Spelling Bee Champion. After competing at both his school and the UISD Spelling Bees, he came out on top and represented the City of Laredo in Washington at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Emanuel enjoyed representing his school, school district and the city of Laredo and shared his secret to studying and staying focused. “I study with electronics. I use spellingbee.com. It tests you in both spelling and vocabularies.” Rimocal is no stranger to academic excellence. His coach Gabriela Navarro noted that Emmanuel began reading at the age of 4 and tested out of the 2nd grade.

nited Independent School District’s fourth annual League of Legends awards dinner was held on March 9, 2017 at the Paseo Real Reception Hall. The festive gala was held to celebrate UISD alumni who have achieved academic and professional success, in addition to contributing to their communities. This year, a record 33 alumni from all four UISD high schools (United, United South, Alexander, and Lyndon B. Johnson), were inducted into the ranks of the League of Legends. The evening's activities were prefaced by a formal welcome from Board Member Javier Montemayor Jr. and Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. Entertainment was provided by the fabulously talented Clark Middle School Mariachi Del Norte, directed by Gilbert Cuellar, Hector Gil, and Monica Espinoza. During the ceremony each inductee was called upon to receive their League of Legends award as family members, spouses and nominators filled the air with applause and cheering. On the morning of March 10, the honorees visited their respective high schools for homecoming rallies, and a chance to speak to students about their education and careers.

FLAT PANELS (IFP’s)

T

he Curriculum Instructional Technology Department (CIT) is excited to announce that the third phase of the Interactive Flat Panel (IFP) Roll-out Plan is currently underway. Elementary and Middle School students and teachers throughout the district will soon be experiencing advanced 21st Century Technology in their classrooms by the Fall of 2017. As part of the approved November 2013 Bond, implementing interactive technology into the classrooms allows our students a first-hand experience at access to interactive instruction. This implementation will create a game changing experience directly affecting teaching, learning and enhancing engagement. Our students are accustomed to using smartphones and tablets on a daily basis, so adding these panels into the classrooms to replace inanimate “Dry Erase Boards” will make for a smooth transition for them. Additionally, the quality of the display of images, activities, lessons and assessments, along with hands-on touch capability, allows for a brighter and more engaging instructional environment. To increase the success of this deployment, the CIT Department has provided customized grade level and content specific training and support for our teachers on the integration of this new interactive technology into district curriculum as well as how it relates to interacting with the Google cloud-based environment. Trainings and continued support is preparing teachers to flip their classroom instruction while strengthening their “learner- centered” environment. Additionally, teachers have the capability to connect to a variety of SMART Resources at the touch of a screen, allowing for meaningful, real world learning connection. This summer the CIT Department will host SMART Cadres to design and create lessons and activities to enhance the district's Scope & Sequence.

The Board of Trustees recently approved the use of 2013 Bond funds for the replacement of standard white boards with the SMART IFP’s in many designated classrooms. This phase will continue through summer and will be completed by fall of 2017. This phase includes installing IFP’s in all third through fifth grade classrooms as well as all Pre-Kinder, Music, Science

Labs, and Special Education Unit classrooms for Elementary Schools. Middle Schools will receive IFP’s in all Core/STAAR 6th, 7th and 8th Grade and Special Education Unit classrooms. The United and United South 9th Grade campuses, along with Freedom Elementary School, will open their future doors this August and will be equipped with IFP’s in every classroom. Since the effect of integrating this advanced technological device is like having a giant touch screen tablet in the classroom, a student's affinity toward its level of comfort and use will mirror what they are accustomed to in their everyday life; thus, making the learning experience much more realistic and meaningful allowing daily instructional activities to bear greater impact on our students’ academic success by taking ownership of the learning process. The resounding consensus, from a student’s perspective is priceless. Nothing speaks louder than sitting in a classroom observing students racing to the front of the classroom to participate with the interactive lesson of the day. Teachers can now instantly have students participate in “real-time” virtual tours to such places as the Smithsonian, the Pyramids in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Grand Canyon and the powerful splendor of Niagara Falls. The ability to annotate on and save documents, open up multiple tabs, access digital resources, and the ability to work collaboratively using the Google Cloud is invaluable. This amazing state of the art instructional tool is just one more way United ISD is working at preparing our students for a technology-driven future in post-secondary education, jobs and careers.

t was the start of a great year for two UISD teachers when they arrived for a press conference hosted by Toyota of Laredo on Bob Bullock Loop. The dealership, a division the Powell Watson Auto Group, organized the press conference to congratulate UISD’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year (Miguel Angel Chavez from Centeno Elementary): and Secondary School Teacher of the Year Andrea J. Garza from United South High School. To reward their excellence, Powell-Watson allowed the teachers to pick the car they wanted to drive at no charge for one full year. Mr. Chavez chose a GMC Yukon and Ms. Garza opted for a Mercedes Benz. Operations Manager Zachary Powell said that supporting the great work of local

educators and students has always been a priority for the locally owned company. The Powell Watson Motors Auto Group is also the official title sponsor for UISD’s Golf Tournament “Fore” Our Students , which has raised $150,000.00 since 2015. ELECTRONIC forms for Athletes The United ISD Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that parents and students can now complete all UIL and UISD athletics participation forms online. The student athlete electronic participation forms process eases the completion and submission of several forms that are required each year for students to participate in athletics. Parents and Student Athletes can access the online forms by visiting our website at www.uisd.net (Department –Athletics – Student Athlete Electronic Participation Forms). All UISD student athletes are required to use the Pre-Participation – Physical Examination Form

provided (Revised 12-4-14). NO OTHER PHYSICAL EXAM FORM WILL BE ACCEPTED. A new physical is required for all 7th -12th grade students prior to the start of the new school year. • All UISD student athletes are required to submit a yearly physical form in order to participate in athletics. Physical forms are valid only for the current academic school year and expire on the last day of school. • All required UISD & UIL Paperwork must be on file with the athletic trainers prior to the student participating in any practice, scrimmage, workout or contest (to include Athletic Period).

United South High School senior Andrea Miranda Paez, was selected as the Laredo Border Patrol Youth of the Year for 2017. Laredo Sector Border Patrol Acting Chief Robert Boatright made the announcement of the final selection by program partners during a special ceremony held at the International bank of Commerce (IBC), Annex ballroom located on Jacaman Road. IBC awarded Ms. Paez with a beautiful sash, which she will wear during her graduation ceremony. Youth of The Year program co-sponsors honored Ms. Paez with generous quantities of awards and prizes. Glen Ruiz from Royal Laser Wash, Dr. Sara Campos, and the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club each donated a $1000.00 scholarship, and Meals 4 lbs. and AHEC donated $500.00 scholarship. In addition, Mattress Firm awarded Ms. Paez with a $1000.00 shopping spree, Laredo Energy Arena provided free tickets to an upcoming show, and AwardMasterz donated a beautiful engraved plaque to mark the occasion. Ms. Paez also received a Congressional Certificate of Recognition from U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar's office. She will also get a tour the Texas State Capitol, and be introduced on the senate floor. Furthermore, a special reception hosted by State Senator Judith Zaffirini will be held in her honor. Ms. Paez plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station to pursue a career in bio-medical science. Laredo IBC

Bank President Imelda Navarro said that it is an IBC tradition to recognize Laredo’s best students. “As a program partner, it’s an honor to recognize young ladies and gentlemen who understand the importance of academics and giving back to their community," she concluded. The Youth of the Year program is the culmination of the Youth of the Month program that recognizes students from all Laredo area high schools. Students are selected for recognition based on their academic standing and community involvement. 25

In addition, Clark Middle School student Arabellah Lozano was honored as one of the Top 3 Overall 8th Graders of the Year for her essay about putting an end to bullying.

Students who garner the Outstanding 8th Grader title are excellent students and role models who also serve our community through various charities and projects. The United ISD Board of Trustees and District leaders recognized the outstanding contributions of this year’s retirees with an Appreciation Banquet at the Paseo Real Reception Center on April 20, 2017. The list of honorees ranged from classroom teachers of all grades and disciplines, to custodians, bus drivers and administrators. Honorees were recognized for the contributions to the district and presented with a plaque commemorating their years of service to the District.

Musical performance by the Mariachi Imperial del Sur from United South High School under the Direction of Mr. Roberto Ortiz complemented the festive mood of the gathering. “We thank our retirees for their devotion to our students and wish them well as they journey to the next chapter of their lives,” concluded Roberto J. is set to open 3 New Campuses for the 2017-2018 School Year

United ISD is pleased to announce the opening of three new campuses for the 2017-2018 School Year. The construction of the three campuses was made possible by the voter approved bond passed in 2013.

Freedom Elementary School is the District’s 28th Elementary School and

200,000 square feet, and will house 1,200 students.The campus will feature a 600 capacity cafeteria with indoor and outdoor dining areas and two student common areas within the academic wings, with natural daylight, and a library. The current United 9th Grade Campus located on McPherson will house the incoming Alexander High School 9th grade students for one school year until the Alexander High School 9th grade campus is completed in August 2018. This campus is located East of Loop 20 off of the Del Mar Blvd. extension.

is located in east Laredo at 425 E.G. Ranch Road. The school’s mascot will be the bee and the school colors are yellow, black and silver. Laura P. De Los Santos, former principal at R.C. Centeno Elementary, was named school principal. Freedom Elementary will alleviate overcrowding at Zaffirini Elementary and Bonnie Garcia Elementary. Freedom Elementary is a 104,445 square feet single story building which will serve approximately 950 students from pre-k to grade 5. The main building entrance incorporates a new security station manned by District police officers to enhance school security and monitor day-to-day activities. Visitors, students and staff have cleared the security station and entered the building, they will be received in a large lobby overlooking the central courtyard. The four corners of the school are anchored by the library and computer lab, the cafeteria and a multi–purpose gymnasium which will also serve as a venue for school events and performances. Over 45 classrooms overlook an enclosed courtyard of the campus, including 28 standard classrooms, 16 early education classrooms, 2 special education classrooms, 2 state-of-the art computer labs, a multi-purpose room, a science classroom and a music room.

AEP Texas

AEP Texas recently presented United ISD with a check in the amount of $152,951.00 for its partnership with the SCORE (Schools Conserving Resources), program. CLEAResults, who manages the SCORE program, evaluated energy saving improvements in the district, and determined that United ISD qualified for the incentive dollars. In 2016, the districts’ Energy and Environmental Management department replaced standard interior fluorescent lamps and exterior security light

fixtures with LED lamps and fixtures. District-wide, more than 165,000 LED lamps, 400 parking lot light fixtures, and close to 1,500 exterior wall packs were replaced with LED light fixtures. It is estimated that the District will save approximately 27,225 kilowatt-hours a day and over 4.5 million kilowatt hours annually. According to EPA calculations, the energy savings is enough to power 341 homes per year and savings to the District is expected to be $458,000.00 annually.

TO PERFECT ATTENDANCE STUDENT

Attending school every day has really paid off for United South High School graduate Victoria Davila, as she was the winner of a brand new 2017 Kia Soul! The give-a-way announcement was made June 2 at the Laredo Energy Arena in front of a live audience, just before the Lyndon B. Johnson High School graduation ceremony. The car give-a-way was part of the 4th Annual Sames Auto Group “Kia in the Klassroom” Program which promotes the importance of daily school attendance for high school students throughout the school year. Each time a student had perfect attendance for at least one nine-week period, they were given a special voucher to drop off at the Sames Kia dealership which was entered into the drawing for the free car. “Sames is proud to support local education as it is the pillar upon which we have built our 107 year legacy. We will continue to partner with the UISD in their efforts to promote daily student attendance and student academic success,” said Evelyn Sames of Sames Auto Group.

A total of 16 semi-finalists, four from each high school, were selected for the final phase of the give-a-way. In addition to receiving a free car from Sames Auto Group, the Laredo Federal Credit Union paid the tax, title and license on the vehicle and A&K World Class Driving School awarded a free drivers education course to Davila. The other 15 semi-finalists received a tablet, courtesy of Sames Auto Group and free sandwiches for a year were given to three students. These items were from Chick-fil-a Marketplace located at Bob Bullock Loop and Clark Blvd.

he United ISD Employees of The Year banquet was held at the LIFE Downs Pavilion on May 2, 2017. Recognition categories included “Teacher of the Year,” “Instructional Paraprofessional of the Year,” and “Paraprofessional/Auxiliary Staff Member of the Year” at the elementary, secondary, and department levels. “District-Wide Employees of the Year” received trophies, plus prize packages valued at $400 each. The names of “District-Wide Teachers of the Year” were also announced. Four runner-ups for that title received vouchers valued up to $1,500, courtesy of Ashley Home Store, who graciously donated a total of $5,000 to reward our teachers. Additionally, the winners of “District-Wide Teachers of the Year” will get to drive several new automobiles of their choice from the Powell Watson Motor Company for one full year! CEREMONIES

United ISD proudly hosted its high school graduation ceremonies earlier this month at the Laredo Energy Arena. Families filled the arena to see their loved ones graduate. Over 3,000 students received their diplomas becoming part of United ISD’s prestigious alumni. While graduation may conclude a student’s education at United ISD, the District encourages all students to pursue their future and career goals and enrich the world we live in. The graduating class sizes were as follows:

Lyndon B. Johnson High School had 656 students receive their diplomas, United High School had 1,014 students receive their diplomas, J.B. Alexander High School had 632 students receive their diplomas, and United South High School had 732 students receive their diplomas. In an effort to provide families and friends who were unable to attend the ceremonies, the District’s Instructional Department and Informational Technology Department streamed the event live on the District website. This enabled family and friends to see their loved ones walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. To date, United ISD graduates received over $28 million in scholarships that will help them pursue their post-secondary schooling. The District is proud to report that many graduates have already committed to continuing their post-secondary educational goals and attend various vocational schools, colleges and universities.

s un honor presentarles la última edición de Parent Connection del ciclo escolar 2016-2017. Nuestro objetivo es mantener a la comunidad informada de las últimas iniciativas del distrito, mientras resaltamos los logros de nuestros estudiantes. En este número encontrará información actualizada sobre el programa de construcción del bono escolar, sobre nuestros programas de verano y otras actividades que han ocurrido en el curso de este año. Estoy muy orgulloso de los avances que hemos logrado como distrito gracias a nuestros empleados y maestros. También siento gran admiración por nuestros alumnos que continúan sobresaliendo en matemáticas y en las actividades extracurriculares. Fue un verdadero honor asistir la semana pasada a las ceremonias de graduación de nuestras cuatro preparatorias. Felicito sinceramente a los graduados de la generación 2017. Su graduación es un suceso del cual nos sentimos muy orgullosos. La mesa directiva y su servidor agradecen a los padres y familias por su apoyo para brindar a nuestros estudiantes la mejor educación posible. Por último, agradezco a nuestros empleados por contribuir al éxito no solamente de nuestros alumnos, sino al éxito de nuestro distrito y comunidad. En lo referente a la enseñanza, UISD continúa brindando a los estudiantes una excelente educación pública. Nuestros maestros muestran gran dedicación para asegurar que los estudiantes estén bien preparados para el examen STAAR y las evaluaciones de fin de curso. Además, continuamos mejorando nuestro programa de enseñanza al proveer a maestros y personal con capacitación adicional. Me complace anunciar que la segunda fase de nuestro programa de construcción del bono escolar continúa avanzando. Nuestras escuelas nuevas (primaria Freedom, preparatoria United South de 9no grado y preparatoria United de 9no grado) ya casi están terminadas y estarán listas para la instalación de equipo y mobiliario este verano. Estos hermosos planteles estarán preparados para dar la bienvenida a los estudiantes en agosto.

Graduados de ALEXANDER asistirán a academias militares DIEGO Mendez PREPARATORIA

ASISTIRÁ A LA ACADEMIA DE LA FUERZA AÉREA DE LOS E.U.

Diego Mendez, estudiante graduado de la preparatoria Alexander, asistirá a la Academia de la Fuerza Aérea de los EU en Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mendez expresó el gran entusiasmo que siente por haber recibido la oportunidad de servir a su país. “Siempre he tenido el deseo de contribuir con la preservación de nuestra libertad y también espero en un futuro convertirme en neurocirujano”, dijo Mendez, quien espera poder ingresar a la Universidad de Ciencias de la Salud del Servicio Uniformado (Uniformed Services University in Health Sciences). La Universidad de Ciencias de la Salud es dirigida por el gobierno federal de los EU en Bethesda, Maryland. “Desde pequeño solía ver programas sobre medicina en Discovery Channel y esos programas hicieron que creciera mi interés en las ciencias de la salud y en convertirme en doctor. He mantenido un promedio general alto y debo obtener una buena puntuación en el examen MCAT para poder ingresar”, explicó. Mendez fue vicepresidente de la Sociedad Nacional de Honores en su escuela y asistió a la escuela especializada de ciencias de la salud en la escuela preparatoria Alexander desde que cursaba 9no grado. Actualmente cuenta con un certificado en asistencia dental, administración de RCP y está capacitado para utilizar desfibriladores. Mendez espera ansiosamente lo que el futuro le depare y agradece a sus padres, Ricardo y Delia Mendez, por su gran apoyo. “Espero con ansiedad poder servir a mi país y enfrentar los retos que se me presenten”, concluyó.

ANDREA C. Martinez

Andrea “Andie” Celeste Martinez, estudiante graduada de la preparatoria Alexander, asistirá a la Escuela Preparatoria de la Academia Naval de los EU (Naval Academy Preparatory School – NAPS). NAPS es una escuela de la Academia Naval de los EU que se ubica en Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island.

Andie, como también se le conoce, expresó su emoción por asistir a la institución para la cual se preparó durante mucho tiempo. “Me siento bendecida, abrumada y conmocionada. La idea de asistir a la academia me llena de entusiasmo y estoy lista para iniciar las clases en julio”, expresó Martinez. A Martinez le gustan los desafíos ya que tuvo el rango más alto, capitana, del Equipo Dazzler Dance and Drill de la preparatoria Alexander. Además, Andie acumuló una gran cantidad de horas de participación escolar y comunitaria como fue el iniciar la primera y única División Key Club en Laredo. Participó en prestigiadas organizaciones tales como el Comité de Asesoría Estudiantil del Superintendente, la Sociedad Nacional de Honores, el Club BETA y el concilio estudiantil. Martinez también participó en la comunidad organizando eventos de caridad tales como recolección de juegues, Jeans for Teens y fue voluntaria en organizaciones como LAPs y the Regent Nursing Community Home. Martinez desea convertirse en oficial naval y continuar sus estudios en leyes militares. Su objetivo es trabajar en un puesto público al convertirse en senadora de los EU. 36

Christina A. Gonzalez, estudiante graduada de la preparatoria John B. Alexander, asistirá a la Academia Naval de los EU, escuela mixta de cuatro años de servicio federal en Annapolis, Maryland. Gonzalez expresó su entusiasmo y deseo de finalmente poder iniciar su carrera en la milicia. Gonzalez desea convertirse en piloto aviador y sabe que la capacitación que recibirá a partir del mes de junio, incrementará su capacidad para lograr su objetivo. Esta joven estudiante forma parte de una familia que cuenta con un historial militar como su tío, quien formó parte de la Academia Naval, y su hermano, Jerry Gonzalez, quien actualmente forma parte del Cuerpo de Cadetes de Texas A&M en College Station, Texas. Gonzalez tuvo la clasificación número 20 en una generación de 632 alumnos que graduaron de la preparatoria Alexander en junio y logró tener un promedio general de 4.17. La alumna está convencida que su ingreso a la Academia Naval se debe en gran parte a su participación en actividades extracurriculares y comunitarias. Christina formó parte del equipo de vóleibol Lady Bulldogs y fue jugadora estrella. Asistió a la escuela especializada en Ciencias de la Salud y participó en organizaciones tales como el Comité de Asesoría Estudiantil del Superintendente, la Sociedad Nacional de Honores y la Sociedad Nacional de Honores en Ciencias. Además fue vicepresidenta del programa H.O.S.A., asistente dental certificada y también cuenta con un certificado en RCP y primeros auxilios. Gonzales también participó en el Programa Big Brothers Big Sisters y en servicio comunitario. Gonzalez reconoce que no estaría en el lugar que ahora se encuentra sin el amor y apoyo incondicional de sus instructores, amigos, familia y personal escolar. Gabriel H. Santos Benavides, ha sido nombrada “Directora de Primaria 2017” del estado por el Programa de Reconocimientos a la Excelencia Académica de H-E-B. El anuncio formal se hizo el 9 de mayo en la ceremonia de este programa, la cual se llevó a cabo en Austin.

La Dra. Villarreal ha trabajado en el ramo de la educación durante 26 años y en United I.S.D. durante 22. Ha fungido como directora de la escuela primaria Col. Santos Benavides por un total de 18 años. Sus estudios incluyen una licenciatura de Texas State University, con una especialidad en matemáticas y una subespecialidad en ciencias de la política; una maestría en administración académica de Texas A & M University y un doctorado en liderazgo académico de Texas A & M Corpus Christi y Kingsville. La Dra. Villarreal está convencida de que cada estudiante cuenta con un potencial para aportar algo especial y único al mundo. “Mi papel como educadora es ayudarlos a desarrollar su potencial y a descubrir sus aptitudes para que puedan expresar sus propias opiniones y promover sus propias ideas. Creo que es importante imponer retos diariamente a los estudiantes al participar en actividades que promuevan un orden de pensamiento superior, tal como resolver problemas, razonar, crear, analizar, sintetizar y evaluar. Cuando los alumnos participan en este tipo de actividades, establecen su independencia y, por lo tanto, tienen la libertad de explorar y aprovechar su potencial”, comentó la Dra. Villarreal. H-E-B entregó a la Dra. Villarreal un reconocimiento y una subvención de $10,000 para ella y $25,000 para su escuela.

GANADORES de la 29na FERIA ANUAL DE CIENCIAS

nited I.S.D. llevó a cabo su Feria anual de Ciencias en el Complejo de Actividades Estudiantiles (SAC) el 4 de febrero. Más de 200 estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria compitieron para ganar un reconocimiento de las cuatro categorías: Ciencias sociales y ciencias conductuales; ciencias biológicas, médicas, bioquímicas y de la salud; química, ecología y ciencias de la tierra; física espacial, ingeniería y computación. Los jueces del distrito y la comunidad revisaron los proyectos y los resultados finales fueron revelados durante una ceremonia formal.

Además de anunciar a los ganadores del evento, se entregaron 24 premios especiales para los estudiantes de las cuatro escuelas preparatorias del distrito. Lucy Gonzalez, Coordinadora de Ciencias de Educación Secundaria de United I.S.D., comentó que los proyectos fueron realmente impresionantes y que el evento fue todo un éxito ya que más de 50 miembros de la comunidad colaboraron en el proceso de elección.

También, el 1 de abril, cinco estudiantes de United I.S.D. compitieron en la Feria Estatal de Ciencias e Ingeniería en Ganadores de secundaria: San Antonio. Carlos Mendez fue condecorado como campeón del distrito. El 1 de abril, Carlos Mendez llevó su proyecto a competir en la Feria Estatal de Ciencias e Ingeniería en el Centro de Convenciones de San Antonio. Carlos se hizo acreedor a un Reconocimiento Especial de la Academia Naval en Ingeniería, convirtiéndose en el primer alumno en Laredo en recibir un premio a nivel estatal.

El día 18 de ese mismo mes, Carlos obtuvo el 4to reconocimiento que consistió en $500.00 otorgado por el Instituto Americano de Aeronáutica y Astronáutica. El galardón “AIAA Loop Up”! celebra las investigaciones especiales que exhortan a continuar con los estudios del espacio aéreo. Carlos Mendez es estudiante de la preparatoria United y Campeón de la Feria de Ciencias de United I.S.D. Mendez compitió en la Feria Estatal de Ciencias e Ingeniería en San Antonio y en la Feria Internacional de Ciencias e Ingeniería Intel en Los Ángeles, California con su proyecto titulado “Avionic Engine Supremacy”.

as olimpiadas especiales de primavera del Área 21de Texas 2017 iniciaron en SAC el 25 de abril. Aproximadamente 900 atletas de UISD, LISD y distritos escolares circunvecinos participaron en la ceremonia de apertura. El evento inició con la caminata tradicional de los atletas especiales y sus escuelas. La presentación de la escolta estuvo a cargo del ROTC, infantería de Marina, de la preparatoria United South, bajo la dirección del sargento mayor Joselito Tijerina. La banda de la misma preparatoria, bajo la batuta de Francisco J. Sosa, entonó el himno nacional y la vibrante participación de las Silver Steppers y porristas, lideradas por su directora Maria Cordelia

Solis, fue un deleite para todos los presentes. Después del recorrido en la pista de la antorcha olímpica por parte de voluntarios de diversas agencias del cumplimiento de la ley locales, del distrito y del área, Roberto J. Santos, superintendente de UISD, encendió la antorcha olímpica junto con Emanuel Saucedo, de la preparatoria United South, y Leslie Blanco, estudiante de la preparatoria Lyndon B. Johnson, ambos nombrados Atleta del Año. Santos agradeció especialmente a todos los empleados y estudiantes del distrito que ayudaron a que los participantes y sus escuelas se sintieran como en casa.

Ortografía

manuel Rimocal, estudiante de 4to grado de la primaria Kennedy-Zapata, fue nombrado campeón del concurso de ortografía en la ciudad de Laredo. Después de concursar en ortografía a nivel escolar y del distrito, resultó ganador y se prepara para representar a la ciudad de Laredo en Washington en el Concurso Nacional de Ortografía Scripps. Emmanuel comentó la emoción que siente de representar a su escuela, al distrito y a Laredo y compartió su secreto para estudiar y prepararse. “Estudio con la ayuda de programas electrónicos. Utilizo el portal de spellingbee.com. Te evalúa tanto en ortografía como en vocabulario”. No es la primera vez que Rimocal se destaca académicamente; su instructora, Gabriela Navarro, comentó que Rimocal empezó a leer a la edad de 4 años y resultó exento de cursar el 2do grado gracias a su destacado desempeño escolar.

Las actividades de la noche iniciaron una bienvenida formal por parte de Javier Montemayor Jr., miembro de la mesa directiva, y Roberto J. Santos, Superintendente. La parte musical estuvo a cargo de talentoso Mariachi del Norte de la secundaria Clark, dirigido por Gilbert Cuellar, Hector Gil y Monica Espinoza. Este año, un récord de 33 ex alumnos de las cuatro preparatorias de United ISD (United, United South, Alexander y L.B.J.) pasaron a formar parte del prestigiado grupo de la Liga de Leyendas.

inaugurará 3 nuenas escuelas en el ciclo escolar 2017-2018

ISD

United ISD se complace en anunciar la apertura de tres escuelas nuevas durante el ciclo escolar 2017-2018. La construcción de estas tres escuelas fue posible gracias a que los votantes aprobaron el bono escolar 2013.

La escuela Freedom es la primaria no. 28 del distrito y se ubica al este de la ciudad

en 425 E.G. Ranch Road. La mascota será una abeja y los colores representativos serán amarillo, negro y plateado. Laura P. de los Santos, anteriormente directora de la primaria R.C. Centeno, fue nombrada directora de esta nueva escuela en febrero del presente año. La primaria Freedom reducirá la sobrepoblación estudiantil de las primarias Zaffirini y Bonnie Garcia. Las instalaciones de la nueva primaria son de un piso, con una extensión de 104,445 pies cuadrados, y brindarán servicio a aproximadamente 950 estudiantes de pre-kínder a 5to grado. La entrada principal del edificio cuenta con una caseta de vigilancia atendida por oficiales de policía del distrito para resguardar la seguridad escolar y monitorear las actividades diarias. Cuando visitantes, estudiantes y personal escolar pasen la caseta de vigilancia e ingresen al edificio, encontrarán el amplio vestíbulo desde donde se aprecia un patio principal. La escuela contará con una biblioteca, un laboratorio de computación, una cafetería y un gimnasio multiusos, el cual servirá de escenario para eventos y actuaciones escolares. Más de 45 salones dan al patio o a las instalaciones circundantes, incluyendo 28 aulas regulares, 16 salones de educación temprana, 2 salones de educación especial, 2 laboratorios de computadoras de vanguardia, una sala multiusos, un salón de ciencias, así como una sala de música. United ISD inició la construcción de la nueva preparatoria United de 9no grado en abril de 2015. La esperada escuela reemplazará a la actual preparatoria de 9no grado, ubicada en 8800 McPherson Rd. Esta preparatoria está ubicada enfrente de la preparatoria United, en 2811 Hillcroft Drive. La nueva escuela es de dos pisos y cuenta con

instalaciones separadas para el Programa de Agricultura-Futuros Agricultores de América. El edificio cuenta con 200,000 pies cuadrados y alojará a 1,200 estudiantes. La cafetería de esta escuela tiene capacidad para 600 estudiantes con áreas internas y externas para comer y dos áreas de recreo dentro de la sección de aulas y una biblioteca. La actual preparatoria United de 9no grado alojará a los estudiantes de 9no grado de la preparatoria Alexander hasta que culmine la construcción de su escuela en agosto de 2018. Esta escuela está ubicada al este del Loop 20, a un lado del bulevar Del Mar.

La preparatoria United South también abrirá las puertas de su nueva preparatoria de 9no grado, ubicada en

3819 Aguanieve Drive, a 2 cuadras del plantel principal. La nueva preparatoria de 9no grado ayudará a disminuir la sobrepoblación estudiantil en los pasillos del plantel principal con instalaciones con capacidad para 1,200 estudiantes. La nueva escuela tendrá una cafetería con capacidad para 600 alumnos, con áreas interiores y exteriores para comer, y dos áreas de recreo dentro de la sección de aulas y una biblioteca. La seguridad inicia en la caseta de vigilancia, seguida del vestíbulo. Las escaleras y el elevador conectarán los dos pisos de las instalaciones, las cuales estarán recubiertas de mampostería. También contará con un sistema de aire acondicionado y calefacción, así como un estacionamiento con capacidad para 250 vehículos. Los alumnos ingresarán a la escuela de 9no grado y, al culminar su primer año de preparatoria, asistirán al plantel principal.

Las tres escuelas fueron construidas con fondos del bono escolar 2013 aprobado por los electores, quienes apoyaron la edificación de las preparatorias de 9no grado y las nuevas primarias y secundarias. interactivas

l Departamento de Tecnología Académica del Plan de Estudios se complace en anunciar que la tercera fase del Plan de Introducción de Pizarras Digitales Interactivas (Interactive Flat Panel – IFP) ya se ha puesto en marcha. En otoño de 2017, los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria y maestros de todo el distrito utilizarán tecnología del siglo 21 en sus aulas. Como parte del Bono Escolar, aprobado en noviembre de 2013, se está implementando tecnología interactiva en los salones, lo cual permitirá que nuestros estudiantes experimenten de primera mano una enseñanza interactiva. La implementación de esta tecnología creará una forma distinta de enseñanza que modificará la manera de impartir la clase, el aprendizaje y mejorará la participación de los alumnos. Los estudiantes están acostumbrados a utilizar diariamente teléfonos inteligentes y tabletas por lo que el reemplazo de pizarrones con superficie de marcador por pizarras digitales en los salones será una transición sencilla. Además, la calidad de las imágenes, actividades, lecciones y evaluaciones, junto con la capacidad táctil, permite que haya un mejor entorno académico sin que los alumnos tengan problemas para ver lo que se imparte. Para incrementar la función de estos dispositivos, el Departamento de Tecnología Académica ha brindado capacitación de acuerdo con el nivel de grado y contenido específico y apoyo para nuestros maestros en la integración de esta tecnología interactiva en el plan de estudios del distrito, así como en la interacción con el servidor Google con almacenamiento en la nube. Las capacitaciones, así como el apoyo continuo, han facultado a los maestros para cambiar la manera de impartir la clase mientras fortalece su entorno de enseñanza. Además, los maestros tendrán la capacidad de conectar una variedad de dispositivos SMART a la pantalla táctil, permitiendo una conexión de aprendizaje con el mundo real.

Este verano, el Departamento de Tecnología Académica llevará a cabo capacitaciones SMART para diseñar y crear lecciones y actividades para mejorar la secuencia y alcance de enseñanza del distrito.

La fase tres de este proyecto incluye la instalación de pizarras digitales interactivas en salones de tercero a quinto grado, así como en salones de preescolar, música, laboratorios de ciencias y unidades de educación especial en primarias. Las secundarias instalarán estas pizarras en los salones de 6to, 7mo y 8vo grado de materias esenciales y en la unidad de educación especial. La construcción de las preparatorias United y United South de 9no grado y la primaria Freedom, que abrirán sus puertas el próximo mes de agosto, contarán con pizarras digitales interactivas en todos los salones. Ya que estas pizarras asemejan la pantalla de una tableta táctil, el nivel de uso y comodidad de los estudiantes se compara a los dispositivos electrónicos que utilizan diariamente, haciendo que el proceso de aprendizaje tenga un mayor impacto en su desempeño académico. La opinión general, desde la perspectiva de los estudiantes, es invaluable. Nada es más gratificante que observar a los alumnos y su deseo de participar interactivamente en la lección del día. Los maestros podrán hacer que los estudiantes participen en viajes virtuales a lugares como el Smithsonian, las pirámides de Egipto, la Torre Eiffel en Francia, el Gran Cañón y las Cataratas del Niágara. La habilidad de anotar y guardar documentos, abrir múltiples páginas, tener acceso a recursos digitales y trabajar en grupo utilizando la nube de almacenaje Google no tiene precio. Esta herramienta de vanguardia es otro de los recursos de United I.S.D. para preparar a los estudiantes para su futuro al continuar con sus estudios, en sus trabajos o profesiones.

El concesionario, división de Powell Watson Auto Group, organizó el mencionado evento para felicitar a Miguel Angel Chavez, maestro de la primaria Centeno, quien fue elegido como Maestro del Año de Primaria y a Andrea J. Garza, maestra de la preparatoria United South, y quien fue galardonada con el reconocimiento de Maestra del Año de Preparatoria. Para recompensar su excelencia, Powell-Watson permitió a ambos profesores elegir el auto que quisieran conducir sin costo alguno por un año entero. El Sr. Chavez eligió una camioneta GMC Yukon y la Srita. Garza optó por un Mercedes Benz. Zachary Powell, gerente de Operaciones, dijo que apoyar la

gran labor de maestros y estudiantes de la localidad siempre ha sido una prioridad para esta empresa local. El grupo automotriz Powell Watson también es el patrocinador oficial del torneo de golf “Fore” Our Students, el cual ha recaudado $150,000 desde su inicio en el 2015. JOVENdel Año Andrea Miranda Paez, estudiante de 12do grado de la preparatoria United South, fue elegida como Jóven 2017 por Laredo Border Patrol. Robert Boatright, Jefe Interino de la Patrulla Fronteriza Sector Laredo, anunció la elección final de los patrocinadores del programa durante una ceremonia especial que se llevó a cabo en el salón de fiestas de International Bank of Commerce (IBC), ubicado en Jacaman Road. IBC hizo entrega a la Srita. Paez de una banda, la cual usará durante su ceremonia de graduación.

Los copatrocinadores del Programa Joven del Año hicieron entrega a la Srita. Paez de generosos premios y regalos. Glen Ruiz de Royal Laser Wash, la Dra. Sara Campos y el Club de Motocilistas Blue Knights Law Enforcement donaron becas de $1000.00 cada uno y Meals 4 Lbs. y AHEC donaron becas de $500.00. Además, Mattress Firm le regaló un vale a la Srita. nited I.S.D. se complace en informar a los padres de familia y contribuyentes los U proyectos de construcción y renovación financiados por el Bono Escolar 2013. Las

constantes mejoras en nuestras escuelas, aunadas a la construcción de escuelas nuevas, aseguran que los estudiantes de United I.S.D. tomen clases en un entorno académico de calidad. El distrito planea que la construcción de siete escuelas nuevas culmine dentro de los próximos 2 años y medio. Además, ya han terminado los proyectos de expansión, adición, renovación y actualización de equipo de vigilancia en varias escuelas del distrito. La siguiente tabla muestra el estado actual de los proyectos del Bono Escolar 2013:

Sames Auto REGALA UN NUEVO KIA SOUL

POR ASISTIR DIARIO A CLASES

Asistir diariamente a clases fue una gran recompensa para Victoria Davila, estudiante graduada de la preparatoria United South, ya que resultó ser la ganadora de un auto nuevo Kia Soul 2017. Se anunció a la ganadora de este sorteo el 2 de junio en Laredo Energy Arena momentos antes de que iniciara la ceremonia de graduación de la preparatoria Lyndon B. Johnson. Este sorteo de un auto forma parte del Programa “Kia en el Salón de Clases’ (Kia in the Klassroom) de Sames Auto Group. El programa se llevó a cabo por 4to año consecutivo y promueve escolar la asistencia escolar diaria para los estudiantes de preparatoria. Cada vez que un alumno tiene una asistencia perfecta al menos en un periodo de nueve semanas, se le entrega un vale especial para llevarlo al concesionario Sames Kia y poder participar en el sorteo de un auto. “Sames se enorgullece en apoyar la educación local ya que es fundamental para continuar con nuestro legado de 107 años. Continuaremos colaborando con UISD en su esfuerzo por promover la asistencia escolar diaria y el buen desempeño académico de los estudiantes”, comentó Evelyn Sames de Sames Auto Group.

Además de recibir un auto nuevo de Sames Auto Group, Laredo Federal Credit Union solventó los gastos de impuestos, título y licencia del vehículo y la escuela de manejo A&K World Class ofreció a Davila un curso de manejo totalmente gratuito. Los 15 semifinalistas recibieron una tableta electrónica, cortesía de Sames Auto Group, y sandwiches gratis durante todo el año para tres de estos estudiantes, cortesía de Chick-fil-A Marketplace, ubicado en Bob Bullock Loop y el bulevar Clark.

AEP Texas United ISD obtiene incentivo de

AEP Texas entregó recientemente a United ISD un cheque por la cantidad de $152,951.00 debido a su colaboración en el programa SCORE (Schools Conserving Resources—Escuelas Conservando Recursos). CLEAResults, que administra el programa SCORE, evaluó las mejoras en el ahorro de energía en el distrito y determinó que éste calificaba para recibir el mencionado incentivo. En el 2016 el departamento de Energía y Gestión Ambiental del distrito reemplazó las lámparas flourescentes estándar interiores y los dispositivos exteriores de iluminación de seguridad

por lámparas y dispositivos de iluminación LED. Más de 165,000 lámparas LED, 400 lámparas en los estacionamientos y aproximadamente 1,500 lámparas exteriores de pared se reemplazaron en todo el distrito. Se estima que el distrito ahorrará aproximadamente 27,225 kilovatio-horas al día y más de 4.5 millones kilovatio-horas anualmente. Según los cálculos de la EPA (Environmental Protection Agency—Agencia de Protección del Medio Ambiente) el ahorro de energía es suficiente para alimentar 341 hogares al año y se estima que el ahorro del distrito sea aproximadamente $458,000 anuales.

l 2 de mayo, United I.S.D. llevó a cabo el banquete para “Empleados del Año” en el Pabellón LIFE Downs. Se entregaron reconocimientos en diversas categorías incluyendo “Maestro del año”, “Asistente académico del año” y “Asistente/miembro del personal auxiliar del año” a nivel primaria y secundaria, así como en diversos departamentos. Los “Empleados del año” del distrito se hicieron acreedores a trofeos y paquetes de premios con un valor de $400 cada uno.

En el evento, también se anunciaron los nombres de los “Maestros del Año del Distrito”. Los cuatro ganadores del segundo lugar recibieron vales de $1,500, cortesía de Ashley Home Store, quienes amablemente donaron un total de $5,000 para nuestros maestros.

Además, los ganadores del título “Maestros del Año del Distrito” podrán conducir durante todo el año el automóvil nuevo de su preferencia de Powell Watson Motor Company (los maestros conducirán un vehículo nuevo cada 3,000 millas).

United ISD culmina ciclo escolar con CEREMONIAS de graduación United I.S.D. llevó a cabo las ceremonias de graduación de preparatoria a principios del mes en Laredo Energy Arena. Las familias asistieron a la arena para presenciar la graduación de sus seres queridos. Más de 3,000 estudiantes recibieron su diploma, convirtiéndose en miembros del prestigioso grupo de ex alumnos de United I.S.D. Aunque la graduación concluye con la educación de los alumnos en United I.S.D., exhortamos a todos los alumnos a continuar con los objetivos que se hayan impuesto para el futuro y para su carrera y a enriquecer el mundo en el que vivimos. La cantidad de estudiantes graduados de preparatoria fue la siguiente: La preparatoria Lyndon B. Johnson hizo entrega de 656 diplomas a los graduados; la preparatoria United contó con 1,014 graduados; la preparatoria J.B. Alexander entregó 632 diplomas a sus graduados y la preparatoria United South tuvo una generación de 732 graduados. En un esfuerzo por brindarlos a familiares y amigos, que no pudieron asistir, la oportunidad de presenciar este evento, los Departamentos de Tecnología Académica e Informática del distrito transmitieron el evento en vivo a través del portal de United I.S.D. Esto permitió que familiares y amigos pudieran presenciar la entrega de diplomas a sus seres queridos. Hasta este momento, los estudiantes graduados de United I.S.D. han recibido más de $28 millones en becas que los ayudarán en sus estudios superiores. El distrito informa con orgullo que muchos de nuestros graduados ya se han comprometido a continuar sus estudios superiores y asistirán a diversas escuelas vocacionales, colegios y universidades. Además, antes de que iniciara la ceremonia de graduación, Sames Kia de Laredo anunció al feliz ganador de este ciclo escolar de un auto nuevo Kia Soul 2017. El sorteo del automóvil fue la culminación del Programa Sames Kia en el Salón de Clase. Esta sociedad con el distrito brinda a los estudiantes que tengan una asistencia perfecta, la

oportunidad de conducir un auto Kia Soul, cortesía de Sames Kia de Laredo. Este año, los gastos de impuestos, título y licencia de conducir del auto fueron cubiertos por Laredo Federal Credit Union y A&K World Class Driving, otorgando al ganador un paquete de clases para conducir totalmente gratuito. “Por cuarta vez consecutiva, Sames Kia es el orgulloso patrocinador de este programa. Estamos muy contentos de ver que este incentivo ha sido todo un éxito al promover un buen desempeño académico”, mencionó Evelyn Sames de Sames Motors. “Respaldamos esta iniciativa para enfatizar la importancia de la asistencia escolar diaria. Felicitamos orgullosamente a la Generación 2017 y les deseamos éxito en la vida”.
