Notas del Párroco

We are at a pivotal moment in our history here in the United States. Ours is a country founded on immigrants, on those who left their country to seek a better life in the New World. So the current hostility of our government toward recent immigrants is disturbing, and a trend the American Catholic Bishops have sharply condemned. The saint whose memorial we’ll celebrate tomorrow (Nov. 13) is considered the patron saint of immigrants. Frances Xavier Cabrini is the first American citizen to be canonized, although she didn’t arrive in the U.S. until she was nearly 40 years old. Mother Cabrini (as she is known) was born in northern Italy, the youngest of 13 children. When she was a teenager, she decided she wanted to be a nun, but her health wasn’t good so she was turned down by several religious orders. Instead, she became a school teacher, but she never lost the desire to be a missionary sister. The local bishop fortunately was sympathetic to her, and he encouraged her to gather some women who might be interested in the same goal and to establish her own community. In 1887, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Since it was her intention to go to China, she gave herself the religious name of Frances Xavier after the great Jesuit saint who had evangelized in the Far East. Mother Cabrini’s next step was to seek approval from the Vatican, so she asked for an audience with Pope Leo XIII. He listened to her plans to take her sisters to China, and then he said to her: “Sister, we need you to go West, not East.” In the late 1800’s millions of Italians were pouring into the United States, escaping poverty in their own country. Pope Leo knew that most of these immigrants were desperately poor and not being served by the Church. That’s the situation that Mother Cabrini found when she arrived in New York City two years later. She immediately set to work visiting the sick, opening schools for children and adults, and establishing orphanages for children whose parents had died. She and her sisters later spread this work to Chicago, New Orleans, and even to to Central and South America. The extraordinary thing about this is that Mother Cabrini was never a strong person physically. But she was 100% convinced that she and her sisters were God’s instruments, and that that they were doing God’s work. Considering that the sisters had little money, no political power, and no worldly authority, their many accomplishments are little short of a miracle. The lesson for us is that if we truly intend the greater glory of God, then every goal can be accomplished. We may be weak, but as the Gospel says, “Everything is possible for God.” Fr. Ulysses
