Lutron® | ganging & derating ganging & derating A typical dimmer is wider than a switch. This increased size helps the dimmer dissipate internal heat which is normal to operation. Dimmers can get ganged together such that the space between them is the same as for switches. To do this, a portion of the fins (heat sink) must be removed. The fins are grooved to make the removal of fins easy with a pair of pliers.
The removal of these fins reduces the capacity (load) the dimmer can control. Please reference the following charts to see the derating information in regards to the dimmers you are installing.
Note: Standard switches can be ganged without derating. 1 Minimum loads: 40 W for Maestro and Abella dimmers; 60 W for Maestro IR dimmers. 2 Companion dimmers/switches for Maestro and Abella do not require derating. 3 For use with only one ceiling paddle fan; prevents fan motor hum. 4 Total fan plus light load may not exceed 2.5 A.
