CHRISTMAS FOR OUR HOMEBOUND & CONVALESCENT HOME RESIDENTS As we continue our Advent Season preparation, we are aware of many who cannot join us in this special season. In the past, your wonderful participation has brought much delight to our homebound and convalescent, just knowing that someone took time to remember them. Often yours is the only card or gift they receive. Remember: if you couldn’t get out to do your own shopping, what gift would you like to receive? On the tables near the Cathedral doors and at our hospitality table, you will see decorated baskets with name cards to be selected for the homebound parishioners or convalescent home residents. You may want to ”adopt” one of them to be remembered in prayer during Advent and with a card/small gift for Christmas. Your loving participation brings joy to our homebound, just knowing that someone took time to remember them. Some suggestions are slippers, throws, books, scarves, rosaries, shower sandals, crossword puzzels, gift cards, hand lotion, knit hats, prayer books, warm socks, robes, pajamas to name a few. Please drop off the gifts at the rectory. God bless you for your generous kindness.

HONOR A LOVED ONE BY HELPING TO DECORATE OUR SANCTUARY You still have time to purchase poinsettias in honor or in memory of your loved ones. These poinsettias will help to decorate the Sanctuary this Christmas Season. Each poinsettia plant is $20.00. Order envelopes are located in the pews and the parish office. Those who have been honored will be listed in the parish bulletin in January.

TRANSEPT DOOR UPDATE AND CHURCH CLOSURE SCHEDULE The church will be closed after the 8:15am Mass weekdays from January 7th through January 11th and then again the following week from January 14th through January 18th for the installation of the transept doors. The 12:10pm Mass has been cancelled on those days. Also cancelled during those two weeks are funerals, 6:30pm Spanish Mass, Adoration and Confessions and the monthly Adoration on January 8th - 9th. We are grateful for your patience and understanding while the transept doors are installed.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-December were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
