WELCOME SISTER MARIANA DE JESUS Happy New year to all parishioners, may our Lord Jesus Christ be born in all of our hearts and fill our homes with joy and peace. I am sister Mariana de Jesus Duenas, Eucharistic Missionaries of the Most Holy Trinity. I would like to share a bit about me as I feel blessed and thankful for this opportunity to be a part of the Holy Family Cathedral community. I was born in Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico, studied in Siliviano Carrillo Institute, with the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament in Ciudad Guzman. I come from a big family, Mom Sabina, Dad Rafael, I am the 6th daughter of 9 children and the rest of my family blessed by several religious sisters and priests, including a grand-aunt from which I inherited her name, love for God and her religious vocation. After my arrival to the United States back in 1998, I was able to work in various companies and at the same time started to be involved in Youth Ministries at Saint Joseph’s Parish in Mountain View, and participate in weekend retreats for young adults. This is where I’ve met my now, sisters in God. After a long discernment, I accepted the invitation of the Holy Spirit to offer my life as a Missionary, after all, Jesus is the one that makes everything happen, and at its right time. My formation began here in Orange County 2003, since then I have been sent to different missions in Mexico a side of my studies of Theology, Sacred Scriptures and Spirituality. I took my Initial vows in 2007, and I continued my community life by following the Spirit and Mission of our founders Venerable Fr. Pablo Ma. Guzman, MSpS and Sr. Enriqueta Rodriguez, MESST. My last journey 2014 brought me back to where everything started assisting the Youth Ministries in the Diocese of Orange County. For the last two years, I was the Evangelization and Catechetical Director at Our Lady of Guadalupe Delhi. And, I finally, after spending a few months in a Human Development Workshop, I’m here to begin a new journey in Life of Faith together. I commend myself to your prayers.

BEWARE: FRAUDULENT IMMIGRATION SERVICES OFFERED It has come to our attention that once again fraudulent immigration services are being offered to parishioners at our parishes and in their homes and neighborhoods. In particular, an organization calling itself “Hope in Youth & Catholic Academic Enrichment Program” has been claiming that they can assist immigrants and the undocumented navigate the naturalization process and help prepare their children for the PSAT Test. They have also claimed affiliation with the Diocese of Orange which is completely FALSE. The only approved immigration, and naturalization services provider that is approved to market their services within our parishes is Catholic Charities of Orange County. This month we are in great need of macaroni & cheese, peanut butter, canned meats (tuna, chicken, spam) and canned fruit, laundry soap, shampoo and conditioner. CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word. TREASURES OF OUR TRADITION Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since “today there is a blessing on the water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. —James Field, Copyright © J.
