“How will these kits help increase my students’ Language Proficiency?” Many students have social fluency in English, but not academic fluency. To encourage students to become more language proficient, the annotated picture cards include vocabulary and comprehension activities for each book. Differentiated lessons also support language proficiency levels.

“What are lap books? How are they special?” Lap books are the perfect size for small group instruction and partner reading. Two students can read together more easily with a lap book than a big book, due to its compact size!

“What aspects of balanced literacy are supported by these kits?” The components support read-alouds, guided reading, guided writing, and partner reading.

“What is the educational philosophy supporting this work?” Instruction must focus on students’ strengths, accessing prior knowledge and interests while integrating language and content instruction. The kits supplement teachers’ efforts in teaching and reinforcing all four modalities found in ELA and ESL assessments: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
