On this first Sunday of Lent, we are reminded that forty days of Lent calls us to perseverance in faith, because the forty days of Lent are a me of trial and purificaon. “Call upon me, and I will answer,” the Lord promises. Each of us is tempted, as Israel was, TO FORGET the great deeds He works in our lives, TO NEGLECT our birthright as His beloved sons and daughters. He faces the temptaons put to Israel: Hungry, He’s tempted to grumble against God for food. As Israel quarreled at Massah, He’s tempted to doubt God’s care. When the Devil asks for His homage, He’s tempted to do what Israel did in creang the golden calf. Jesus fights the Devil with the Word of God, three mes quong from Moses’ lecture about the lessons Israel was supposed to learn from its wilderness wanderings. Like Jesus, we are being tempted every day. These 40 days invite us to humbly invesgate our lives and see if we have played our roles as members of God’s family. Moved by the Holy Spirit, let us see in the Mass a memorial of our salvaon, and “bow down in His presence,” offering ourselves in thanksgiving for all He has given us.

Lenten Guidelines For members of the Roman Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Roman Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Roman Catholics are bound to abstain from meat and meat products on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays of Lent.

En este primer Domingo de Cuaresma, se nos recuerda que 40 días de Cuaresma nos llama a la perseverancia en la fe, porque los 40 días de Cuaresma son un empo de prueba y purificación. "Llama a mí, y yo responderé", promete el Señor. Cada uno de nosotros es tentado, como lo fue Israel, para olvidar las grandes obras que él trabaja en nuestras vidas, para descuidar nuestro derecho de nacimiento como sus amados hijos e hijas. Se enfrenta a las tentaciones puestas a Israel: hambriento, él está tentado a quejarse contra Dios por la comida. Mientras Israel peleaba en Massah, él está tentado a dudar de la atención de Dios. Cuando el diablo pide su homenaje, está tentado a hacer lo que Israel hizo al crear el becerro de oro. Jesús lucha contra el diablo con la palabra de Dios, tres veces citando de el discurso de Moisés acerca de las lecciones que Israel debía aprender de sus andamientos en el desierto. Como Jesús, estamos siendo tentados todos los días. Estos 40 días nos invitan a invesgar humildemente nuestras vidas y a ver si hemos desempeñado nuestros papeles como miembros de la familia de Dios. Movidos por el Espíritu Santo, veamos en la Misa un Memorial de nuestra salvación, y "postrarnos en su presencia", ofreciéndonos en acción de gracias por todo lo que El nos ha dado.

Directriz Cuaresmal Para los miembros de la iglesia católica romana, las normas sobre el ayuno son obligatorias desde los 18 años hasta la edad de 59. Al ayunar, se le permite a una persona comer una comida completa, así como dos comidas más pequeñas que juntas no son iguales a una comida completa. Las normas relativas a la abstinencia de la carne son vinculantes para los miembros de la iglesia católica romana a partir de los 14 años. Los católicos romanos están obligados a abstenerse de la carne y los productos cárnicos el Miércoles de Ceniza, el Viernes Santo y los viernes de Cuaresma.









From March 6 through April 14th, you’re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic at 3579 Franklin Blvd., Eugene, Oregon 97403 (Glenwood area), and also to help spread the word about this important community outreach. On Sat., March 16th we are having a Divine Liturgy at Nativity of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church (704 Aspen St. in Springfield) at 11 a.m. and special prayers afterwards for the souls of those who died and especially the unborn, then we will have a simple lunch, and then go and pray at Planned Parenthood together. On Wed., March 20th, Fr. Ron Nelson of St. Mary's Church in Eugene will lead us in prayers at 12:30 p.m. at Planned Parenthood.
