Würth España, a trading company for materials and tools used in the automotive and cargo vehicle industry, agriculture, metal, installers, maintenance, and construction wood, was looking to digitize the entire Würth España product catalog and provide a new delivery channel for their content through mobile devices (tablets or phones). Würth España currently has a sales network of 1,600+ members of the sales force, visiting customers with a product line exceeding 100,000 items. The business structure is complemented by a network of sales branches which, is also available for its 48 pickup shops. Würth España chose avanttic to implement their new multi-channel catalog. avanttic is a software and services company with a clear objective to help their customers in the development of information technologies, enabling them to increase productivity, quality and results.

Organization Würth España spent time analyzing various alternatives to increase their sales force productivity with the mindset of not affecting the spirit of direct channel connections with the customer. Thus, Würth España sought a solution that would allow their customers the ability to place orders at any time (24 * 7) and place orders without going through any intermediaries.

The Business Issue Würth España’s commercial activity is developed through a high-quality printed catalog, which identifies all the technical features of all the products provided by Würth España. The printed catalog is the basic tool of vendors. With the advent of newer channels of content delivery, it became clear that the printed catalog method of information delivery was outdated and inefficient due to its slow sampling and poor portability. Not only was there a learning curve on how to best utilize the printed catalog across the various trades that were serviced, there were also high costs associated with printing and delivering the catalog.

Würth España had performed their analysis and determined the new delivery method to be mobile for their products. The task for avanttic was to create an easy to use, mobile application for online content delivery to complement the already existing print catalog. The application that avanttic delivered was a digitized version of the print catalog

that allowed Würth España to offer products that may be of interest to their customers immediately. This included competition studies, top 50 products, special offers, and more. Also part of the product was guided selling and the ability for the customer to search for specific products of interest. The design by avanttic provided customers with a very dynamic user interface thanks to ADF Mobile and the ADF Rich Client Components that were leveraged to deliver content to the targeted devices, both iOS and Android. Not only was the mobile product easy to use but it also meant a much quicker process to complete a sale and thus the application as a whole was much more attractive to the end customer. “Thanks to avanttic and their development of our mobile solution through Oracle’s ADF Mobile development Framework, we’ve estimated that our quick sells have increased billing by 10% if not more.” – Xavier Masats, CIO of Würth There were two basic requirements for the mobile application as Würth España stated: • The mobile application must work in either a connected or disconnected mode • The mobile application must integrate seamlessly with all the current infrastructure (WebCenter Portal, Oracle Service Bus, WebLogic Server) The first challenge was handling disconnected mode functionality. The application required authentication, and upon successful authentication, the catalog was downloaded to the mobile device via REST Web Services. At this point, the application could be used in disconnected mode. The customer would be able to browse the catalog, place orders, and more. An order would not be complete until the customer was once again authenticated in a connected mode. In addition, a parameter was set such that a downloaded catalog would expire based on user input and a new catalog would have to be downloaded to the device. This was a requirement in order to update prices, new products, and pdf (product details). The second requirement was as simple as delivery of information through REST Web Services. Any content that was delivered to the device regardless of its origin was easily accessed through REST services so the underlying infrastructure was of no concern to the ADF Mobile Application. A service could change and the user interface was not impacted. In addition, with ADF Mobile, it was easy to integrate with native device functionality such as geo-location, email, calendar and contacts for a much richer on-device experience.

Business Value avanttic solved a number of issues for Würth España: • Elimination of the cost or printing the catalogs for over 2,800 products for more than 1,600 commercial sellers as well as distribution of these catalogs. • Secure and instant access (24 * 7) to the content catalog in connected or disconnected mode. • Increased sales providing a more dynamic and focused experience for the end customer. • Customers generated custom catalogs through their regular purchases, through products they looked at but ultimately did not buy, and products in the customers industry to which they belonged. • Intuitive user interface allowed customers to be productive almost Copyright © 2014, Oracle and/or its affiliates. immediately whereas in the past with the print catalog, a customer would not be effective in the proper use of the catalog for up to 3 months which reduced sales and drove up costs.
