FREE ART PROGRAMS!
ABOUT MARWEN Marwen educates and inspires young people from under-resourced communities and schools through the visual arts and college and career programming. By enrolling in Marwen, students are introduced to highquality arts education, meet like-minded peers, and have access to critical college and career preparation to reach their full potential. And it’s completely free. REQUIREMENTS Marwen is FREE of charge and welcomes all students who: • Are from under-resourced schools and/or communities • Cannot afford to pay for art courses elsewhere • Live within the city limits of Chicago • Are in grades 6 - 12 and are at least 11 years old • Self-elect to attend and actively participate • Can make art independently for up to 3 hours, for 10 classes To participate in Marwen’s programs, a student must meet all eligibility requirements. PROGRAM SCHEDULE Courses meet once a week for 2 ½ hours for a total of 10 class sessions beginning Tuesday, February 5, continuing through Saturday, April 13. Marwen does not always follow CPS non-attendance days. Any class cancellations or building closures due to weather or other emergencies will be announced via email. ATTENDANCE POLICY We ask you to show your commitment through consistent attendance and communicating absences with our Student & Family Engagement Team. • Attendance at all scheduled course sessions is expected. • We understand that outside circumstances occur. You are allowed to miss up to two sessions for any reason including: transportation difficulties, illness, and/or family emergencies. Marwen’s two absence policy includes excused and unexcused absences. • In the event of an absence, you must notify Marwen via phone, text, or email prior to your class or as soon as possible. • If you are absent from more than two sessions in the 10-session course, you will be dropped from your course for the remainder of the term. • If you are regularly dropped for absences, you must sign and return an attendance agreement before returning to Marwen. You will only be registered for ONE course for that term. • Communication is key – please notify our Student & Family Engagement Team if you will be absent or late, or with any questions. TARDINESS & EARLY DISMISSAL POLICY • We understand that outside circumstances occur that might make you late, but we still want you to attend class. • Punctual arrival and staying until the end of a class is required for all Marwen courses to ensure you do not miss important information, are not excluded from field trips, and to ensure your well-being traveling to and from Marwen. • It is your responsibility to notify our Student & Family Engagement Team if you are going to be late or need to leave early. • If you are tardy or leave early by 30 minutes or more on three separate occasions, it will be considered an absence. More than two absences are grounds for being dropped from your course. • Parents, please pick up your students on time!

HOW TO REGISTER NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION & REGISTRATION Saturday, January 12, 2019 6 - 8 Graders | Doors open at 9:30 am for open house; program starts at 10 am promptly 9 - 12 Graders | Doors open at 1:30 pm for open house; program starts at 2 pm promptly To register for your first course you MUST attend orientation accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If possible, bring a smartphone or device capable of connecting to wifi and with an internet browser. Students MUST be present for orientation, no exceptions. We encourage early arrival; courses fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Orientation lasts approximately two hours and starts promptly at the designated time. Late entry is not permitted. After your first term, you will be eligible for early online registration with all other returning students. If you are unable to attend orientation or a parent is unable to accompany you, call 312.374.2911 to schedule an appointment. RETURNING STUDENT ONLINE REGISTRATION Wednesday, December 12, 2018 | Opens at 3 pm Register at marwen.org/registration — now mobile-friendly! Register early — courses fill quickly! All requests must be submitted online. If you forgot your password, click on “Forgot Password?” If you forgot your username, click on “Forgot Username?” Once you are logged on, you will be able to update your personal information, select courses, and submit your request. Our registration site is now mobile-friendly, but if you do not have access to a computer, smartphone, or tablet you are welcome to use the computers in Marwen’s Family Lounge.

Registrándose en Marwen, su hijo/hija puede recibir clases de arte de alta calidad, conocer a otros estudiantes interesados en arte, y recibir apoyo para alcanzar sus metas académicas y profesionales. Todo lo que ofrecemos es completamente gratis. Experiment with different photographic processes such as photograms and cyanotypes, and create your own cameras from soup cans and other objects to learn about what led to today’s technology. Masterful Mash-Ups: Painting Explorations TA: Ian Sonsyadek | Studio 4 How do you start a painting? Learn how to generate ideas to create realistic or abstract paintings. Draw inspiration from life and imagination, while experimenting with spray paint, acrylic, and tape to create unique compositions. Flip Side: Printmaking Explorations TA: Liana Faletto | Studio 7 Discover how to make multiples of your artwork. If you like to draw or paint, use your skills to explore drypoint etching, aquatint, and intaglio printmaking techniques. Make copies of your work that you can trade or sell! FRIDAYS | 5 - 7:30 PM Fashion Editorial: Altered Garments TA: DJ DeGayner | Studio 8 Be your own fashion designer and photographer! Gain basic fashion skills by altering ready-made garments and hats into your own designs, then learn how to do your own photo shoot to showcase your garments like a professional.

Using Photoshop and Adobe After Effects learn the professional process called Digital Puppet Animation to bring your flat drawings to life. Create books that fold like an accordion, tell a story with no words, or become sculptural works of art. Learn the techniques used in film and game industries, such as Blender’s 3D modeling software and photography, to create your own digitally modeled self-portraits.
Constructed Image: Photo Installations TAs: Cecil McDonald & Cynthia Weiss | Studio 3 Bring your photographs out of the frame and into space by combining digital photography, cutpaper designs, and lighting to create breathtaking sculptural installations that are inspired by poetry, street art, and photography. Paint from Life: Portfolio Prep TA: Carris Adams | Studio 5 Master observational skills by painting what you see. Learn a little bit of everything: figure drawing, still life, and color theory to make your work pop, refine your painting technique, and create portfolio ready art! Etched Lines: Printmaking Explorations TA: Angee Lennard | Studio 7 Learn how to draw on metal plates and create designs and images that can be transferred onto paper, creating multiples of your art. If you like to draw, bring your skills and create intricate drawings that can be reproduced and shared.

HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND CAREER SUPPORT Marwen’s College, Career, and Alumni team provides individual counseling, resources, and programs to students, alumni, and families. We work with students as they transition to high school, college, or the workforce to help them identify pathways to reach their goals. Our resources and programs are for everyone, including students who are undocumented, studying art, or pursuing studies and work outside the arts. SAT: Practice Test Monday, February 18 | 9 am - 1:30 pm Grades: 10-12 Take the practice SAT for free! Students should arrive on time with No. 2 pencils and a nongraphing calculator for the math section. Exam will include the essay portion of the SAT. We’ll score your test and email you the results. Financial Aid & Scholarships Tuesday February 26 | 5:30 - 7:30 pm This workshop will focus on all the steps of financial aid, researching scholarships, the FAFSA verification process, and understanding award letters from colleges. Open to Marwen students and families. 11

Marwen is happy to provide a letter or transcript and complete any forms you need to receive enrichment credit for your participation in our programs. Forms must be provided to Karen. SERVICE LEARNING Marwen’s Service Learning Program (SLP) is a new opportunity for current students to support Marwen’s mission while having fun, making friends, and gaining experience. FREE MEALS Marwen is partnering with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to provide healthy, nut-free, pork-free meals.
