September 27-28, 2019 Dear Congress Participants,

It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the annual Santa Rosa Religious Education Congress! In his Apostolic Exhortation on the encounter with the Living Jesus Christ in America, St. John Paul II taught that a place of encounter with Jesus is the sacred Liturgy. Building upon the Second Vatican Council, he wrote about the “manifold presence of Christ in the Liturgy,” (Ecclesia in A merica, no 12). I myself also wrote about the importance of encountering the Living Jesus Christ and the need for us as a Diocese to “re-vision” the importance of liturgy and the Sacraments, especially at Sunday Mass, in my Pastoral Letter on Evangelization (cf. page 11). This year’s theme “Encountering Jesus in the Liturgy” reminds us of Jesus Christ in Liturgy and Sacraments. It is my hope then that you are emboldened to carry this message to the parishes, schools and institutions of the Diocese. May Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, help us to follow her Son. I pray that God continue to shower every good grace and blessing upon you. Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus,

The Most Rev. Robert F. Vasa Bishop of Santa Rosa

Excmo. Rvdo. Sr. Obispo Robert F. Vasa Diócesis de Santa Rosa Santa Misa

“ENCOUNTERING GOD IN THE SACRAMENTS: HOW DO WE HELP OTHERS?” We catechists wholeheartedly affirm with St. John Paul II that “it is in the sacraments, and especially the Eucharist, that Christ Jesus works in fullness for our transformation.” And yet, this transformation isn’t automatic. There are important things we need to understand and abilities we need if we are going to live from the sacraments and be committed to them over the course of a lifetime. What can catechists do to help develop an understanding of the sacraments and a desire to participate in them? Specific strategies will be suggested, so that those we teach can invest themselves into a transforming sacramental life.

Session 1 1 - 11

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

“A Biblical Spirituality of the Sacraments”

Understanding the biblical roots of the Sacraments of the Church is critical for Catholics. This session will provide those who attend important scriptural reflections for liturgy and the sacraments.

1 -13

“Breaking Down the Mass: Structure and Content”

This workshop will provide the overall structure of the Mass and the content of the Mass to provide participants a means to enter deeply into the mysteries of the source and summit of the Catholic Faith. Participants will not only appreciate what the Mass is but the deeper reason for the structure of the Mass.

Rev. John Boettcher

Fr. John has had the wonderful privilege of spending over 2 years in the Holy Land, with countless visits to places mentioned in the Bible. He lived for 7 months in the Holy Sepulchre where Christ died and rose from the dead, 5 months at the site of the Visitation, & a couple of weeks in Nazareth at Mary’s house, where the Annunciation and Incarnation came about. Here it says on the floor, “And the Word HERE became flesh.” For 3 years Fr. John pored over these words daily in his doctoral studies on John’s Prologue. He has spent evenings alone in Mary’s house, singing songs of tenderhearted devotion to her as the sounds echoed and reverberated in the giant basilica. Indeed, she herself said, “All generations will call me blessed.” And so it has been.

1 - 12

Rev. David Jenuwine

Born in Detroit, MI, Fr. Jenuwine grew up in a family of engineers. He worked for 18 years in the automotive industry earning two degrees in Engineering and developed vehicle electronics and control software. After a 6 years stint in the US Navy in Japan as an airborne cryptologist specializing in Chinese Mandarin, he applied the GI Bill and Navy College fund to his seminary and theology studies; earning a degree in Philosophy, and then a degree in Theology. He completed his studies at St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in Minnesota. He was ordained by Archbishop Robert Carlson for the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan in 2009, and three years ago relocated to the diocese of Santa Rosa, and served as parochial vicar at St. Apollinaris Church in Napa. He recently was assigned to St. Vincent de Paul Church in Petaluma.

“Jesus Christ: Contained, Offered and Received Three Wonders of Our Lord's Eucharistic Presence on Earth”

Jesus said to them, "“I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. John 6:35 Do you want to grow closer to Christ but feel unsure about how to go forward? Just as others we love have particular avenues through which they connect and strengthen bonds with us, so does Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Strengthen your bond with Jesus Christ by reflecting on His three fold Presence to us in the Holy Eucharist. Mother Teresa Christe will share the theology of this Mystery of Faith and offer some examples with practical tips to help you grow quickly and securely in Friendship with Christ.

1 - 14

“Introduction to the Liturgy”

What is Liturgy? What does it mean to participate? How do I enter into the mystery? Using the Catechism, and the Scriptures, and the writings of Pope Benedict, Fr. Keyes will explore what is necessary to prepare for and participate fully in the Liturgy. The liturgy essentially involves action and energy: the heavenly liturgy tells us of all the actors in the drama: Christ and the Father, the Holy Spirit, angels and all living things, the people of God (whether already enjoying incorruptible life or still living through the great tribulation). Rev. Jeffrey Keyes

Session 1 1 - 15

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM “The Liturgy of the Hours”

A theological, historical and practical introduction to the Church’s official daily prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. The General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours will be studied and an overview of available resources will be provided. (Workshop repeated 2 - 15 in afternoon)

1 - 17

Catholics, particularly youths, are leaving the faith in record numbers based on the false perception that faith and reason are incompatible. This workshop provides an overview of how to help Catholics combat this trend as seen in the modules developed by Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., in the areas of science, reason, faith and the Sacraments. The 7Essentials Modules are supplemental material designed for those involved with forming ages 12 and older. Attendance is encouraged for all catechetical leaders, parents, and all those concerned with the growing disaffiliation of Catholics from the Church.

Rev. Mr. John Plass

Deacon Plass is a seminarian for the Diocese of Santa Rosa. He grew up in Tulelake, CA, where he learned to appreciate the rhythms of the natural world. This appreciation readily overflowed into a love for the rhythms of the Sacred Liturgy, and it was this attraction to the liturgy that gradually led him to discern a vocation to the priesthood. He was ordained to the diaconate in June of this year and is currently finishing his studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, CA.

1 - 16

“The Sacrament of Reconciliation”

The Lord Jesus gave us the great gift of his divine mercy in Confession. This workshop will address the vital role of this Sacrament of Healing in our lives as Catholics.

Rev. Gary Sumpter

Fr. Gary Sumpter is a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Santa Rosa. He is the Chaplain for the Kolby Academy and Trinity Prep Catholic School in Napa. He is retired and is a resident at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Napa.

1 - 18

“The Eucharist and the Real Presence of Jesus”

This spirituality seminar focuses on the meaning of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The mode of Christ’s presence under the Eucharistic species is unique (Catechism #1374). As St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, it raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as ‘the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend’. Participants will be nourished by a spirituality of the Eucharist.

Rev. Robert Torczynski

Fr Robert Torczynski (aka Dom Marie-Robert) is a graduate of the Integrated Humanities Program of the University of Kansas where he studied under Professors John Senior and Dennis Quinn. Session 2 2 - 11

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

“Scriptural Roots of the Priesthood”

2 - 14

“Sacred Music in the Life of the Church”

We have heard the biblical phrase, “You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek”. But what does that mean? Why does the Catholic priesthood of the New Law find its roots in this ancient line in the Old Testament? How did the people of the Old Testament understand the priesthood? This seminar helps participants reflect on the vital role of the priesthood and its importance for believers today.

This workshop reflects on the beauty and wisdom of the Church when she glorifies God in song during her sacred liturgy. How is music chosen for Catholic Liturgy? Are their any instructions or rules from the Church? St. Augustine wrote, “How I wept, deeply moved by your hymns, songs, and the voices that echoes through your Church!” Participants will appreciate how the musical tradition of the Church is a treasure that forms an integral part of the solemn liturgy.

Rev. John Boettcher

Rev. Jeffrey Keyes

2 - 12

“The Old Testament and Jewish Roots of the Sacrifice of the Mass”

Fr. Cameron will present on the Old Testament and Jewish Roots of the Sacrifice of the Mass with the hope that the better we understand the Old Testament roots from which the Mass came forth, the better we will understand and appreciate the Mass.

2 - 15

“The Liturgy of the Hours”

A theological, historical and practical introduction to the Church’s official daily prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. The General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours will be studied and an overview of available resources will be provided. (Workshop repeated 1 - 15 in morning)

Rev. Mr. John Plass Rev. Cameron Faller, M.A.

2 - 16 Fr. Cameron is in his fourth year as a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He is currently serving as the priest-secretary for Archbishop Cordileone and the vocation director for the Archdiocese. He served as the associate pastor of Church of the Epiphany and as a chaplain and theology teacher at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He was born and raised in Marin County, and he was studying engineering before he decided to follow God’s call to enter priestly formation. He completed the majority of his seminary studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park where he received a master’s degree in theology and divinity.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “The Church believes and confesses that among the seven sacraments there is one especially intended to strengthen those who are being tried by illness, the Anointing of the Sick: This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament” (#1511). This workshop examines the importance of this sacrament and its relevance in our lives today. Rev. Gary Sumpter

2 - 17 2 - 13

“The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit” How do they fit into my life?

The 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit are permanent dispositions which make us docile to the promptings of the Spirit in us. They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. This workshop also reflects on the fruits of the Holy Spirit which the tradition of the Church lists twelve of them. Participants will be enriched by this workshop on gifts and fruits of the Spirit in our lives.

Plenary Session

2:45 PM - 3:45 PM (Gymnasium)

“LIVING A LITURGICAL LIFE OF WORSHIP, WITNESS AND COMMUNION” Vatican II described the split between faith professed and daily life as one of the most serious errors of our time. What is the relationship between the faith we profess and how we live each day? What should be the connection between worship and the world? This session examines how the recovery or renewal of “the spirit of the Liturgy” as divine worship and as the consecration for mission, can help Catholics overcome the division between what we profess to believe and how we live.

Mr. Mark Brumley, M.A.

Mark Brumley is a popular speaker, author, and teacher. He is author of several works, including The Seven Deadly Sins of Apologetics and a Study Guide to Jesus of Nazareth.
