“Peace begins with a smile” My dear friends, The power of showing our WOUNDS. I am often faced with the question about why I share so much about myself, my family, my past, my hurts; why do I become so vulnerable and why am I so transparent? It is because my wounds have brought and continue to bring so much healing and peace to so many people. Jesus says: "touch my wounds." I am faced every time I celebrate Mass and everyday as a priest with a church full of fear stricken people who are dealing with their daily lives which are so full of problems and sufferings; people who have cancer, who have lost a loved one, who can't pay their bills, who have children on drugs, who are addicted to the casino or to alcohol, who have marital issues, who are depressed and anxious and don't want to keep living; the list of things people who come to me deal with can go on and on and on. How do I bring hope to people and give them peace? I do the same thing Jesus did. I show people my wounds! Come - put your fingers into the holes where the nails entered and into the side where the sword cut my flesh and into the marks left by the crown of thorns and into the bleeding marks left by the whipping and do not be unbelieving but have faith and believe. When I share all that has happened to me and all that I have been through and how I have made it; this brings peace to people for it shows them if Father Adam made it: I can make it. It's what Jesus did by showing His wounds to the apostles telling them: "listen they put me on the cross and here is the evidence and I made it and if I made it; so will you!" Jesus tells the fear stricken apostles "be not afraid." He says: "peace be with you." Now if I just tell someone who is afraid to stop being afraid, that won't do it; my words are not enough to calm someone down. The Greek word used to describe how Jesus found the apostles after the resurrection is "phobia;" hence they all had phobias! Phobias are ……(continued on next page)……..
Cover letter continued... paralyzing. So can you imagine how Jesus finds them when He visits them? They are so nervous, anxious, and afraid about living that they are paralyzed from that fear. What does He do to calm them down? The Bible says He shows them His hands and His side; Jesus shows His wounds. Then and only then does the Bible say: they recognize that it is the Lord and they calm down; they regain their composure and their strength and only then will they go out unafraid to face whatever awaits them in the world. It was the wounds that brought them peace. In your own life when you deal with people who have "phobias" what are you to do? Do as Jesus did to calm them down and bring them peace: show them your wounds. Don't just tell people to have peace: tell them about how God has brought you through hell before and how you made it through and how they will make it as well. Share the Good News of your own deliverance by the Great Deliverer and how God will also deliver them. Be real. Be transparent. Be vulnerable. Be like Jesus! "On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the disciples had gathered together and locked the doors of the place because they were afraid. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." After saying this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples were filled with joy at recognizing the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you." John 20:19-21.
