Nuclear Physicist (M/F) www.ill.eu

VACANCY The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, and welcomes over 2000 visits of scientists per year to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields. We currently have a vacancy for a: Nuclear Physicist (M/F) Duties: Working within the “Nuclear and Particle Physics (NPP)” group, you will:  Act as co-responsible for the LOHENGRIN (recoil separator of fission products) and the FIPPS (FIssion Product Prompt gamma ray Spectrometer) instruments  Contribute to the development of the instrumentation of FIPPS: - design suitable target chambers for actinide sample handling - design and test of a fission trigger - develop and implement an improved fission fragment identification (Gas Filled Magnet System and ancillary detection equipment) in collaboration with LPSC  Support visiting scientists in their experiments on fission and gamma ray spectroscopy and act as local contact  Establish new scientific collaborations for FIPPS by promoting neutron-induced fission and nuclear spectroscopy of fission products at ILL  Supervise master’s and PhD students working in this field and using ILL’s instruments FIPPS, LOHENGRIN and PF1B  Pursue your personal research programme in nuclear fission and spectroscopy of fission products. You will be trained with the recoil separator LOHENGRIN and the gamma ray spectroscopy program at FIPPS to get full awareness of the scientific possibilities of the whole instrumental suite for experiments involving fission.

Qualifications and experience: You hold a PhD in physics with a strong knowledge of nuclear fission and/or fission product spectroscopy. You have a strong experience in one or several of the following topics: electromagnetic separators, heavy ion detectors, Ge, Si, or LaBr3(Ce) detectors, digital data acquisition systems. The post represents an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral scientists to develop expertise, broaden experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more experienced scientists able to obtain a secondment period from their home institution will also be considered. Language skills: As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
