GOVERNING BOARD CANDIDATE STATEMENT VAIL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 20

Mark Tate

I first moved to Tucson in 1965. I received my college Degree in Business Administration at the University of Nebraska. We have 2 sons and 6 grandchildren. We are blessed to have one son and daughter-in-law with their 3 children attending Vail Schools. In March 2009 my wife and I moved to Vail. We fell in love with the community. We see it as a small town where everyone wants to move in the same direction. After a successful 30 year career at Raytheon (previously Hughes) in Tucson, I was able to retire. I had read a book entitled From Success to Significance, which encouraged me to find something that I was successful in doing in the work place, and do something of significance in my community. My wife and I began to volunteer and serve in the Vail School District. For the last six years my wife has made over 300 dozen cookies each year to give to the staff members of each of the schools, the District Office, and the Transportation Department. I became a part time Volunteer Coordinator at the newly built Andrada Polytechnic High School. After two years a position was created where I became the Post Secondary Success Coordinator at Andrada. It was a great opportunity where I became the “Grandpa” to 600+ teenagers. I challenged them to consider their lives beyond high school, either college or career. I then tried to bring as many resources to the school to help them with their decision. We also brought many people with “life skills” to present to the students. My wife and I have had a passion to help the Vail School District and the community we have grown to love – not as district parents, but as people who choose to watch our community grow stronger each year. Over the past seven years we have been participating in many project for the community including Vail Pride Day, the district-wide Fisher House fundraiser, the Annual Vail Community Holiday Dinner, and Vail Family University. This May I moved on from my position at Andrada in order to give back in other ways to the greater Vail community. We are now very excited to be a part of Greater Vail Community ReSources – with the mission to provide services to the greater Vail community. The organization will be networking with schools, businesses, residents, and agencies to expand and create the most needed programs. We love Vail, and we love our school district.

Simply stated, my wife and I have found great joy in serving. We have been blessed to be a blessing to others. Mark Tate Vail School District Governing Board

DECLARACION DEL CANDIDATO A LA JUNTA DE GOBIERNO DEL DISTRITO ESCOLAR UNIFICADO NO. 20 DE VAIL

Me mudé por primeva vez a Tucson en 1965. Recibí mi titulo de universidad en Administración de Empresas en la Universidad de Nebraska. Tenemos 2 hijos y 6 nietos. Tenemos la bendición de tener un hijo y una yerna que tienen a sus 3 hijos asistiendo a las escuelas de Vail. En marzo del 2009 mi esposa y yo nos mudamos a Vail. Nos enamoramos de la comunidad. La vemos como un pequeño pueblo en el que todos quieren moverse en la misma dirección. Después de una carrera con éxito de 30 años en Raytheon (anteriormente Hughes) en Tucson, puede retirarme. Había leído un libro titulado Del Éxito a la Importancia, que me animó a encontrar algo en lo que yo tenía éxito al hacerlo en el trabajo y a hacer algo de importancia en mi comunidad. Mi esposa y yo comenzamos a ser voluntarios y a servir en el Distrito Escolar de Vail. Durante los últimos seis años mi esposa ha hecho más de 300 docenas de galletas cada año para dar a los miembros del personal de cada escuela, la oficina del Distrito y al Departamento de Transporte. Yo llegué a ser Coordinado de Voluntarios de tiempo parcial en la recientemente construida Escuela de Preparatoria de Politécnica de Andrada. Después de dos años se creó un puesto cuando me transformé en el Coordinador de Éxito Post Secundaria en Andrada.

Fue una gran oportunidad cuando llegué a ser el “Abuelo” de más de 600

adolescentes. Les reté a que pensaran en sus vidas más allá de la escuela de preparatoria, bien en la universidad o en una carrera. Entonces intenté traer muchos recursos a la escuela para ayudarles con su decisión. También trajimos a muchas personas con “técnicas de vivir” para presentarlas a los estudiantes.

Mi esposa y yo hemos tenido la pasión de ayudar al Distrito Escolar de Vail y a la comunidad a la que hemos llegado a amar– no como padres del distrito sino como personas que eligieron ver a nuestra comunidad creer más fuerte cada año. Durante los últimos siete años hemos estado participando en muchos proyectos para la comunidad incluyendo el Día de Orgullo de Vail, la recaudación de fondos de Fisher House en todo el Distrito, la Cena Anual de Fiestas de la Comunidad de Vail, y la Universidad de Familia de Vail. Este mayo dejé mi puesto en Andrada con el fin de corresponder en otras formas a la comunidad del gran Vail. Estamos ahora muy entusiasmados en ser parte de Greater Vail Community ReSources – con la misión de proporcionar servicios a la comunidad del gran Vail. La organización estará trabajando en red con las escuelas, negocios, residentes y agencias para ampliar y crear los programas más necesitados. Queremos a Vail y queremos a nuestro Distrito.
