Freelance Senior Programme Curator

RESPONSIBLE TO:

Chief Executive Officer and Director of Audience Engagement

DATE PROPOSED:

6 months from July 2015 with potential to extend

CONTRACT:

3 days per week minimum, July 2015 – December 2015

Purpose of Job The Senior Programme Curator is responsible to the CEO for the development and delivery of the Arnolfini programme. It is expected that the Senior Curator will contribute extensively to interdisciplinary and project working across the organisation, in line with the Programme Plan and Business Plan. Key Accountabilities    

Overseeing the delivery and development of the programme in line with Arnolfini’s vision and aims, including management of the programme team and initiating/confirming key programme opportunities as identified by the CEO. Change management of the programme team, including contribution to Arnolfini’s organisational development as a whole in line with the business plan. Maintaining and developing partners locally, nationally and internationally. Maintaining a network of specialists in the appropriate visual arts sectors, engaging them as associates where appropriate. Duties and Responsibilities

Programme  Implement and develop Arnolfini’s ongoing programme, working closely with the Associate Curator and Programme Assistants.  Deliver 2015/16 programme within budget including, Richard Long, Spring 2016 season, Bruce McLean and Daphne Wright.  Lead on key exhibition forward project planning including co curated exhibition with IBT in Spring 2017, Aspen for summer 2017, Emma Smith 5 Hz for Autumn 2017 and 2018 solo exhibitions in addition to the development of performance programme with key partners including Bristol Old Vic, Bristol New Music and Mayfest.  Ensure an integrated approach to programming across art forms, learning and audience development, including key partnerships  Develop resilient income framework for programme areas Internal management  Develop an effective working practice within the Programme team, including contribution to change management and organisational development processes as appropriate in line with the Programme and Business Plans.  Manage clear lines of communication with other departments and the wider staff team.  Establish an efficient cross-organisational production model with freelance production team

External relationships  Maintain personal relationships with Bristol cultural peer organisations and regional artists  Contribute to consolidation and development of national and international partnerships  Establish firm contracts for ongoing partnerships and collaborations  A proactive approach to digital communications for programme Finance  Ensure tight control of expenses and commitments for programme areas  Oversee efficient reporting for grants and sponsorship  Work with the Senior Development Manager to research and develop future funding opportunities in line with the fundraising strategy, including contributing programme information to case for support and funding bids Commercial Operations  Understand potentials of joint thinking between commercial operations and programme areas Governance  Contribute to report to Finance Sub Committee and Council of Management Building  Contribute to the development of an audience focused use of Arnolfini's galleries and events spaces Person Specification Qualifications and experience Essential:  A significant track record of and reputation for delivering a successful contemporary arts programme to an international standard and retaining increasingly diverse audiences, locally, regionally, nationally and international.  Effective communicator, with strong presentation skills.  An effective leader and manager of people, whether paid staff or volunteers.  Demonstrable ability to foster good working relationships with stakeholders and partners including artists.  Significant networks in the arts, nationally and internationally (visual arts and live arts, engagement, cultural industries).  Ability to guide the development of an appropriate and dynamic approach to the use of digital media in programming and interpretation.  Management experience at a senior level.  Financially literate, with some senior experience as a budget holder.  Ability to demonstrate an innovative and creative approach to income generation in this particular context and environment.  A passion for engaging with people.  Excellent project management skills.
