FREE ART PROGRAMS!

ABOUT MARWEN Marwen educates and inspires young people from under-resourced communities and schools through the visual arts and college and career programming. By enrolling in Marwen, students are introduced to highquality arts education, meet like-minded peers, and have access to critical college and career preparation to reach their full potential. And it’s completely free. REQUIREMENTS Marwen is FREE of charge and welcomes all students who: • Are from under-resourced schools and/or communities • Cannot afford to pay for art courses elsewhere • Live within the city limits of Chicago • Are in grades 6 - 12 and are at least 11 years old • Self-elect to attend and actively participate • Can make art independently for up to 3 hours, for 10 classes To participate in Marwen’s programs, a student must meet all eligibility requirements. PROGRAM SCHEDULE Courses meet once a week for 2 ½ hours for a total of 10 class sessions beginning Tuesday, September 25, continuing through Saturday, December 8. There will be no classes November 20 - 24 for Thanksgiving break. ATTENDANCE POLICY We ask you to show your commitment through having consistent attendance and communicating absences with our registrars. • Attendance at all scheduled course sessions is expected. • We understand that outside circumstances occur. You are allowed to miss up to two sessions for any reason including: transportation difficulties, illness, and/or family emergencies. Marwen’s two absence policy includes excused and unexcused absences. • In the event of an absence, you must notify a registrar via phone or email prior to your class or as soon as possible. • If you are absent from more than two sessions in the 10-session course, you will be dropped from your course for the remainder of the term. • If you are regularly dropped for absences, you must sign and return an attendance agreement before returning to Marwen. You will only be registered for ONE course for that term. • Communication is key – please notify the registrars if you will be absent or late, or with any questions. TARDINESS & EARLY DISMISSAL POLICY • We understand that outside circumstances occur that might make you late, but we still want you to attend class. • Punctual arrival and staying until the end of a class is required for all Marwen courses to ensure you do not miss important information, are not excluded from field trips, and to ensure your well-being traveling to and from Marwen. • It is your responsibility to notify a registrar if you are going to be late or need to leave early. • If you are tardy or leave early by 30 minutes or more on three separate occasions, it will be considered an absence. More than two absences are grounds for being dropped from your course. • Parents, please pick up your students on time!

ENRICHMENT CREDIT Do you need enrichment credit for school? Marwen’s registrars are happy to provide a letter or transcript and complete any forms you need to receive enrichment credit for your participation in our programs. Forms must be provided to the registrars. SERVICE LEARNING Marwen’s Service Learning Program (SLP) is a new opportunity for current students to support Marwen’s mission while having fun, making friends, and gaining experience. Visit bit.ly/marwenslp to learn about upcoming SLP opportunities. FREE LUNCHES Marwen is partnering with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to provide healthy, nut-free, pork-free meals. Meals will be available first-come, first-served Tuesday through Friday, 4-4:45 pm and must be eaten at Marwen.

HOW TO REGISTER NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION & REGISTRATION Saturday, September 15, 2018 6 - 8 Graders I 10 am 9 - 12 Graders I 2 pm To register for your first course you MUST attend orientation accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If a parent is unable to accompany you, call 312.374.2971. Students MUST be present for orientation, no exceptions. We encourage early arrival; courses fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Orientation lasts approximately two hours and starts promptly at the designated time. Late entry is not permitted. After your first term, you will be eligible for early online registration with all other returning students. If you are unable to make it to orientation, call 312.374.2971 to set up an appointment. RETURNING STUDENT ONLINE REGISTRATION Wednesday, August 15, 2018 I Opens at 3 pm Register online at registration.marwen.org Register early — courses fill quickly! All requests must be submitted online. If you forgot your password, click on “Forgot Password?” If you forgot the username or email address associated with your account, contact the registrars. Once you are logged on, you will be able to update your personal information, select courses, and submit your request. If you do not have access to a computer, you are welcome to use the ones in Marwen’s Family Lounge.

Become a master of time and space using a digital camera to freeze motion. Photograph liquids in mid-air or people and objects in motion, paint with lights,then use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance them. FINDING CENTER: INTRO TO CERAMICS Studio 6 Learn how to work with clay through handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques. Starting off with basic shapes, learn to create exciting environments, special effects, and even animated characters. CITYSCAPES: INTRO TO DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY TA: Matthew Crowther | Studio 2 Explore Chicago’s landscape while learning the basics of black and white photography. Gain techniques to photograph buildings, streets, and the city in new and interesting ways. Then develop the images in the darkroom, and share your view of Chicago! LARGER THAN LIFE: 3D SCULPTURE TA: Lauren Carter | Studio 5 Make larger-than-life versions of your favorite everyday objects, like a gummy bear as big as your head or a giant pencil that you have to hug in order to draw with! Learn how to use paper-maché, plaster, and paint to create realistic 3D sculptures.

FASHION LAB TA: Nora Renick-Rinehart | Studio 8 Learn how to design your own clothes! Create fabric through dyeing and printing and sew basic garments that can be customized with your own style. After a fun fashion photoshoot, you will leave with an original, ready-to-wear garment.

Start by developing images in your sketchbook, then scan and put them into motion using After Effects. Learn everything from storyboarding to Photoshop to transform your drawings. COLORFUL FIGURES: PAINTING FOUNDATIONS TA: Mel Cook | Studio 4 Love drawing people? Take your figure drawing skills to the next level by exploring oil paint. Learn to draw the figure in proportion and the basics of color mixing for skin tones to elevate your ability to work with the human form. MONSTER MASH: EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING TA: Keaton Bell | Studio 7 What would happen if you took the Mona Lisa and combined it with a scaly dragon? Mash together creatures and figures of your choice, and experiment with combining existing images and your personal art to create something new and unique. SHIBORI: JAPANESE PATTERNS & DESIGN TA: Rachelle Hill | Studio 8 Create beautiful and complex images and patterns on fabric using the Japanese tie-dye art of Shibori. Learn how to stitch, tie, clamp, wax, dye and more to develop mesmerizing images, color patterns, or narrative designs on fabric.

RECONSTRUCTED FASHION: ALTERED GARMENTS TA: Elise Bergman | Studio 8 Create one-of-a-kind clothing using a combination of found clothes, draping, altering, and hand- and machine-sewing. Use pre-existing garments, fabric yardage, found objects, and more to make your own fashion statement.

DIY COLLECTION: ACCESSORY DESIGN TA: Alexis Ellers | Studio 8 Learn to design and construct your own accessories with leather, vinyl, and metal jewelry materials. Work individually or as a creative design team to come up with a cohesive, wearable, collection of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

WEDNESDAYS I 5 - 7:30 PM IMPOSSIBLE DREAMS: DIGITAL ANIMATION TA: Jesse Avina | Studio 1 Animate your life using the Rotoscope technique! Learn how to operate a video camera, edit video, and use Photoshop to digitally draw, manipulate, and alter each frame, inventing new actions and creating your own fantastical landscapes. CHICAGO REIMAGINED: DARKROOM EXPLORATIONS TA: Katie Rodrigues | Studio 2 Using a variety of darkroom and digital photo processes, create a series of photo collages that envision an alternate universe of Chicago! Experiment with photograms, transfers, solarization, and cyanotypes to create your ideal version of the city. PRINT IT, SHARE IT, SELL IT: PRINTMAKING LAB TA: Melody Chang-Snyder | Studio 7 Explore the world of printmaking by learning to make multiples of your artwork that can be reproduced on paper, totes, patches, and posters. Learn to tell a story using studio lights and digital cameras to document 2D and 3D objects from your home, experiences, and memories. DEVELOP YOUR ARTIST VOICE: DRAWING EXPLORATIONS TA: Jeffley Molina | Studio 4 Explore the many ways artists create ideas for artwork and develop your own artist practice. Experiment with pencils, pens, markers, and watercolors to explore personal stories, memory, and imagination to create abstract or realistic imagery. GLASS MOSAIC & SPRAY PAINT TILES TA: Andy Bellomo | Studio 5 Cut and shape glass to fit into lines, shapes, patterns, and text. Or explore design by using stencils and spray paint to create unique tiles. Create tight, clean, and artfully-designed compositions to build your own unique glasswork art.

FRIDAYS I 5 - 7:30 PM PENS TO PIXELS: CHARACTER DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT TA: Nic Meier | Studio 4 Design original characters using the techniques and software used by professional comic book, video game, and animation designers! Design a hand-drawn character from scratch, then use Photoshop to refine and enhance your designs. SILK PAINTING: WEARABLE ART TA: DJ DeGayner | Studio 8 Learn to paint on fabric! Experiment with silk dyes to create watercolor-like designs on scarves and fabrics. Create your own patterns and images – abstract or figurative – to design one-of-a-kind, wearable art.

SATURDAYS I 10 - 12:30 PM PORTRAIT DESIGN: INTRO TO DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION TA: Rosalia Marzullo | Studio 3 Learn basic and advanced Adobe Illustrator techniques by creating vector-based portraits. Reclaim your yearbook photos by creating new portraits in the photo studio, then use professional tools to transform them into graphic illustrations. HAND, FACE, & BODY: PORTFOLIO PREP TA: Carris Adams | Studio 4 Learn how to draw, paint, and sketch the figure with confidence by developing new techniques, practicing creative concepts, and making work ready to add to your portfolio. Never drawn the face or body before? No worries! All levels are welcome.

Learn the techniques used in film and game industries, such as Blender’s 3D modeling software and photography to create your own digitally modeled self-portrait. DIY CAMERAS: DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY TA: Eileen Mueller | Studio 2 Construct your own cameras from scratch using soda cans, cardboard, tape, and other materials. Play and experiment to learn the basics of black and white photography, and become a master of the darkroom! SPLAT, DRIP, POUR: EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING TA: Michelle Bolinger | Studio 5 Who needs brushes to paint? Explore non-traditional painting techniques such as pouring, splattering, dripping, wiping, and more. Bring your personal style – abstract, graffiti, figurative – and see how your work transforms when you experiment.

MAKE & BREAK: HANDBUILT CERAMICS TA: Liz McCarthy | Studio 6 Learn techniques for hand building clay, then break the rules and create your own techniques! Challenge the ways you are “supposed” to use clay and see how rolling, slopping, and slapping can lead to your own style of art.

HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND CAREER SUPPORT Marwen’s College, Career, and Alumni team provides individual counseling, resources, and programs to students, alumni, and families. We work with students as they transition to high school, college, or the workforce to help them identify pathways to reach their goals. Our resources and programs are for everyone, including students who are undocumented, studying art, or pursuing studies and work outside the arts. WORKSHOPS SAT: PRACTICE TEST Monday, October 8 | 9 am - 1:30 pm | Grades: 10 - 12 Take the practice SAT for free! Students should arrive on time with No. 2 pencils and a non-graphing calculator for the math section. Exam will include the essay portion of the SAT. We’ll score your test and email you the results! PORTFOLIO REVIEW Friday, October 12 | 4:30 - 7:30 pm I Grades: 10 - 12 Interested in creating a portfolio for college or art scholarships? Get feedback from professional artists and admission counselors. You’ll get tips and recommendations for next steps and how to make your portfolio stand out. FINANCIAL AID Thursday, October 18 | 5:30 - 7:30 pm This workshop will focus on all the steps involved in applying for financial aid, researching scholarships, and submitting the FAFSA application for college.
