RADAR MOTION SENSORS FROM PEPPERL+FUCHS
A FAMILY OF RADAR SENSORS THAT IS EQUAL TO ANY CHALLENGE RELIABLE: UNCOMPLICATED: detection through one single motion
due to proven radar technology
INTELLIGENT: microprocessor intelligence guarantees flexible adaptation to special requirements
Since radar sensors essentially enable moving objects to be detected, it is virtually a matter of course that they are used as opening sensors on doors. However, the requirements for sensors may differ greatly from application to application. Flexibility is provided by digital signal processors, which enable the motion sensors to distinguish directions of movement and speeds, or to implement a different detection method for people and vehicles. Automatic doors in retail centers and shopping arcades operate on a very different set of constraints to those, for instance, in hospitals or old people’s homes. Different criteria are used for industrial doors or warehouse entries where there is a combination of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. On escape and emergency routes, the issue is compliance with safety regulations coupled with a high degree of reliability.

INDUSTRIAL DOOR APPLICATIONS
DIFFERENTIATED PERSON AND VEHICLE DETECTION Vehicles generate a compact, constant reflected frequency (red sine curve). Arm and leg movements consistently alter the reflected frequency of people (blue sine curve). If there is a common door used by both vehicles and pedestrians, the sensor can be configured so that the door will open completely for vehicles and only half way for pedestrians. If there is a separate pedestrian entry, pedestrians can be ignored while the door will only open to let vehicles pass.
APPLICATION EXAMPLES Door with separate entry for personnel, door controller with one entry, vehicle detection switched on, only vehicle relay connected
Vehicle approaches, vehicle relay is activated, (the LED flashes red/green in quick succession) the door opens
Person approaches, vehicle relay is not activated, door remains closed, person uses side entrance
Door without separate entry for personnel, door controller with two entries, vehicle detection switched on, main relay and vehicle relay connected
Person approaches, vehicle relay is activated, (LED lights up red) the door opens half-way
Vehicle approaches, main relay is activated, (LED flashes green/red in quick succession) the door opens completely 9
THE “SPECIAL” DOOR OPENER
RMS-FRW – THE DEPENDABLE SENSOR FOR EXIT ROUTES Q Self-monitoring opening activation sensor for doors along exit routes Q Satisfies the guideline for automatic sliding doors along rescue routes (AutSchR 1997/12) Q Satisfies the Category 3 requirements of 13849-1 and the SIL2 requirements of EN 61508 Q Programmable, also available with separate remote control Q Direction detection and cross-traffic suppression supplied as standard
Sensors along rescue routes must be specifically equipped and reliable. The RMS-FRW radar sensor is designed for exit routes and is certified to AUTSCHR. Typical areas of application for the RMS-FRW radar sensor include exit and emergency routes with a locking function, exit one way only. In combination with the RMS-D or RMS-M units, exit and emergency routes with sequential door control in both directions are possible.

RADAR SENSOR GLOSSARY
DIRECTION DETECTION GREATER CONVENIENCE The sensor can be programmed with direction monitoring (stereo) or without direction monitoring (mono). When direction monitoring (stereo) is active, only movements towards or away from the sensor are detected depending on the settings. Active direction detection saves on heating and air-conditioning costs because undesired signals will no longer keep doors open unnecessarily for long periods.
CROSS-TRAFFIC SUPPRESSION ECONOMY The cross-traffic suppression function with high and low settings can suppress crossing movements in front of the sensor so that the doors only open when people approach from the front. Recommended for narrow aisles and thoroughfares as well as pavements right in front of doors.
TURTLE MODE PERFECT FOR HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES The turtle mode detects extremely slow movements in the immediate vicinity of the closing area and prevents the door from closing. The turtle mode function also works with closed doors, i.e., the door will open even if a person is approaching so slowly that he/she is not detected using normal motion detection. The door only closes if no movements are detected within the preset time. Specially recommended for the interior of buildings such as nursing homes and hospitals.
DIFFERENTIATED PERSON AND VEHICLE DETECTION INDUSTRIAL DOOR APPLICATIONS Since people and vehicles cause different reflections in the radar detection field, it is easy to distinguish between both.
