P REPARING FOR THE C ONSECRATION OF THE A RCHDIOCESE OF S AN F RANCISCO TO THE I MMACULATE H EART OF M ARY Part 35

ST. JACINTA FELL ILL AT THE SAME TIME as her brother. It had been her particular calling from Our Lady to be what is called a “victim soul.” A victim soul is one who offers himself to Jesus Christ as a kind of living sacrifice of praise, bearing great sufferings in reparation for sins and for the conversion of sinners. Just as Francisco could not remember the details of the apparitions very well, neither could Jacinta. All that she could remember was the vision of Hell that Our Lady showed to the children on July 13, 1917. Our Lady had explained that Hell was the place where the souls of poor sinners go. She told the children that many souls go there because they have no one to offer sacrifices for them. Jacinta took those words deeply into her heart and became concerned with offering herself entirely as a sacrifice for the salvation of many souls. At the beginning of their illness, Our Lady appeared to Francisco and Jacinta to assure them that she would soon take them to Heaven. She explained that Francisco could come first and Jacinta would follow soon after. Our Lady asked Jacinta if she would want to suffer longer on earth to convert more sinners. Jacinta responded with joy that she would gladly offer herself continually to save sinners from Hell. She related the apparition to Lucia:

“Look, Lucia, Our Lady came to see us and said that she was coming soon for Francisco. She asked me if I still wanted to convert sinners. I said yes. Our Lady wants me to go to two hospitals but it is not to cure me. It is to suffer more for the love of God, the conversion of sinners and in reparation for offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She told me that you would not go with me. My mother will take me there and afterwards I am to be left there alone.” The children persevered in heroic virtue throughout their painful illness, which slowly killed their young bodies. St. Francisco obeyed his parents at all times, always taking whatever medicines they gave him, even though they were most disagreeable to his taste and he knew they would not work. Francisco was strong enough at times to take little walks and he often returned to the Cova da Iria to pray the Holy Rosary at the place where Our Lady had visited them. “Our Lady will soon come for me,” he would say, full of great confidence in her love. †

SAN JACINTA CAYÓ ENFERMA AL MISMO TIEMPO que su hermano. Ha sido su llamado particular de Nuestra Señora a ser lo que se llama un “alma victima”. Una alma víctima es aquella que se ofrece a Jesucristo como una especie de vivo sacrificio de alabanza, llevando grandes sufrimientos en reparación por los pecados y por la conversión de los pecadores. Así como Francisco no podía recordar muy bien los detalles de las apariciones, tampoco Jacinta. Todo lo que ella pudo recordar fue la visión del Infierno que Nuestra Señora mostró a los niños el 13 de Julio de 1917. Nuestra Señora había explicado que el Infierno era el lugar donde iban las almas de los pobres pecadores. Ella les dijo a los niños que muchas almas van allí porque ellas no tenían a nadie que les ofrezca sacrificios por ellas. Jacinta tomó esas palabras profundamente en su corazón y se preocupó de ofrecerse ella misma enteramente como un sacrificio por la salvación de muchas almas. Al comienzo de su enfermedad, Nuestra Señora se apareció a Francisco y Jacinta para asegurarles que pronto ella los llevaría al Cielo. Ella les explicó que Francisco vendría primero y que Jacinta lo seguiría poco después. Nuestra Señora le preguntó a Jacinta si querría sufrir más tiempo en la tierra para convertir a más pecadores. Jacinta respondió con alegría que ella volvería a ofrecerse a si misma continuamente para salvar a los pecadores del Infierno. Ella relató la aparición a Lucía: "Mira, Lucía, Nuestra Señora vino a vernos y dijo que ella vendría pronto para Francisco. Ella me preguntó si yo todavía quería convertir a los pecadores. Yo le dije que si. Nuestra Señora quiere que vaya a dos hospitales, pero no es para curarme. Es para sufrir más por el amor de Dios, la conversión de los pecadores y en reparación por los delitos cometidos contra el Inmaculado Corazón de María. Ella me dijo que tu no irías conmigo. Mi madre me llevará allí y después yo me quedare allí sola. Los niños perseveraron en su heroica virtud durante toda su dolorosa enfermedad, que lentamente mató a sus cuerpos jóvenes. San Francisco obedeció a sus padres en todo momento, siempre tomando los medicamentos que le dieron, a pesar de que eran más desagradables a su gusto y él sabía que no funcionarían. Algunas veces Francisco era lo suficientemente fuerte para dar pequeños paseos y solía regresar a la Cova da Iria para rezar el Santo Rosario en el lugar donde Nuestra Señora los había visitado. "Nuestra Señora vendrá pronto por mí", el solía decir, lleno de gran confianza en su amor. †
