Lake Miona Quilters PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE April 2017 Spring is in the air. I know I want to be outside but it is hard when I also want to sew! It is also hard to say goodbye to our seasonal friends. I wish them all safe travels back to their other homes. We look forward to seeing them return in the Fall with new ideas and projects to share with us. We are so lucky to have such wonderful people in our Chapter where we all learn from each other! A big thank you to Pat Francese and Ann Boudrot for all the work they did in arranging our shopping trip to Rainbows End. It was a huge success. They have another trip planned to Dade City on April 11th. We will be car-pooling that trip. If you can drive please let them know. If you want to go and can’t drive let them know as well. I am sure they will make arrangements for everyone. If you choose not to participate in the trip, our room is available for you to sit and sew. Following our April Business Meeting Marie Nappi will be doing a presentation regarding the Guild’s up-coming programs. The information will be of interest to us all. Blotto Committee – Cathy Bluemling, Mary Ann Caggiano

The participation in our monthly Blotto game has been excellent. The Committee is so glad that our ladies are enjoying the challenge of creating beautiful interpretations of the blocks.

Audrey Temmer’s log cabin block was a huge success and the lucky winner of the blocks was Ann Boudrot. Lucky lady! At our Business Meeting we’ll get to see the colorful blocks submitted for Joyce McKee’s Blotto challenge! Wonder who’ll be hanging a beautiful “spools” quilt in their sewing room? Also at our Business Meeting, Phyllis Speicher will present the next Blotto block. Phyllis always brings interesting blocks to our games that provide us with a new learning experience. You rock, Phyllis!

Charity Committee – Bev Riley, dee Burns-advisor, Ellen Miller, Judy Norris, Kathy Wink

Our chosen charity for this year is a repeat of the quilts for Guardian Ad Litem. There are many of us who enjoy working on this project because the quilts can be made any size great for using up leftover fabric. The quilts will be given to the children to keep, helping to give the children a sense of security. If you will need batting and backing, please contact Helen with the size of your quilt so that she can bring what you need to our next Tuesday meeting Another project with be TRIPLE “T” TUESDAY. We contacted the Christian Food Pantry and found that the need is for toilet paper, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. We will be collecting these products in May, since we don’t have enough time to coordinate this project for April. Our chapter will also be making a donation to the Wildwood Soup Kitchen for the summer. There is a strong need for food during those months.

Display Case Committee – Doris Woodward, Sandy Plunkard

The "luck ‘o the Irish" was evident in our display case for the month of March. Kudos to our Leprechauns, Joyce "McDoig" and Beverly "O'Riley" for their artistic display. Elaine Kent and Helen Valois will be decorating our April display case. We are looking forward to their designing talents. As a reminder, if you are unable to take care of the month you chose, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. Should you have any concerns, please contact Doris or Sandy.

Out and About Committee – Ann Boudrot, Pat Francese

Car trips will be planned for the second Tuesday of each month, after our regular quilt meeting. We will drive to the location and have lunch before entering the quilt shop. Volunteer drivers will be needed, see sign-up sheets at our regular meetings. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR NAME TAG or CHAPTER SHIRT to identify yourself as being with our group in order to receive any special discounts. Our April 11th trip will be to Quilts on Plum Lane, Dade City. Lunch reservations have been made at Lunch On Limoges, which is a few doors down from the quilt shop. More information will be shared at our meetings, along with a sign-up sheet. A Cup of Coffee With Karen Pulsney

On a recent Tuesday morning I had the pleasure of having a chat with Karen, one of our more recent members. She and Marty Snider developed a friendship at exercise class and she was lured to our chapter. Good work, Marty! Although Karen and her husband, Wayne, and their adopted Korean son have lived all over the country (MD, ME, CA, PA, MN ) they most recently hail from State College, Pa. In fact, she was employed by Penn State as a financial auditor for the College of Science. Karen is an alumnus of University of New Hampshire with degree in accounting and finance. Now her son, Matt, works for the Nittany Lions' school. They kept it in the family. The Pulsneys are snowbirds and have owned a home in the village of Dunedin since 2014, having rented for a while in 2013. She tells me that she's been sewing since childhood and has sampled all disciplines ...garments (for dolls at first), home dec and now quilting. Mostly she enjoys smaller projects like bags and table toppers because, really, just how many bed-sized quilts does one family need? Especially since her only child has not yet jumped the broom and ergo; no grand-babies yet. Her other interests include making greeting cards, golfing, exercising and does, when there's the occasion, enjoy skiing and hiking. She is also active in the Order of Eastern Star in State College and has been since 2008. Ready for the hook???? You know I almost always wheedle one out of my interviewees. Little "big-as-a-minute" Karen is a former US Army E5 Sergeant! Looking for something different yet meaningful to do she enlisted in the mid 1970's post Viet Nam War and was heading for a tour of duty in the topographical surveying department. Where else would the Army use some one with a degree in finance? Certainly not in the budget balancing office. Wouldn't want Karen to get a gander at a receipt for a $600 toilet seat...no, no, no. Well, while she was surveying topography she caught the eye of the Criminal Investigating Department powers that be. Her efforts were appreciated and there she was, a CID agent investigating the nefarious doings of pilferers and general rule breakers and sadly, suicides. Karen the sergeant cop! Who'da thunk it? Goes to show that just about anyone can defy pigeonholes in which many wish to place us. Stop by and take a look at some of the bags she carries, very nice work and quite clever. Not sure if you'll need to salute, tho'. Looking forward to May, Donna
