Lake Miona Quilters PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE July 2016 Hurray! We are home from California. It was a great trip but it’s always better to be back home in The Villages. The graduation was beautiful. The weather was good. It was 35º in the mornings and went up to 55º by 11:00 a.m. and by noon it was up to 106º. When the sun went down the temperature started to drop. Chuck, Nancy T ( our daughter) and I visited some quilt shops. (No trip is complete without shop-hopping!) We visited 5 of the 127 quilt shops in the area. The number of quilts produced each month by the 175 quilt guild members is amazing!
I was pleased to hear that our visit with the Mulberry Chapter was a big success. They have invited us to join them at their November meeting. Beth Dombek taught Rickie Tims’ conversion quilt. She graciously arranged to have a class on Saturday to help anyone who did not finish their quilt. She also assisted some ladies at the June 21st meeting who missed her demo and wanted to make the convergence quilt. Many thanks, Beth, for generously sharing your time and knowledge. It looks like July will be a fun, busy month. Don’t forget to check the calendar of events on the last page of this Newsletter and always check the bulletin board that is present at our weekly Chapter meetings. Happy Quilting!

Block of the Month - Pat Francese Thank you Ann Boudrot for your demonstration of June's Block of the month "Crab Apple". Demonstrators have been doing a terrific job!! Helen Kumpfmiller is on board for July. She will demonstrate "Pork & Beans" on the second Tuesday. "Pork & Beans" is from Eleanor Burns' book, "Quilts f rom El's Kitchen" (Quilt in a Day-2013), page 33. Suggestions for participants: 1) Have your pieces cut to size before demo (see "following" requirements for material and cutting of fabric for either a 12" or 6" block); 2) watch demo in back corner of our room; 3) return to your own work station where you can piece and sew your block together; Demonstrator will be there to help with any questions you may have. (Remember: sewing machine w/ appropriate matching thread, cutting tools, rulers, etc. 4) For those of you who have one, remember to bring El's book with you to demo; 5) If possible, please let demonstrator know ahead of time if you will be participating so we can have appropriate number of handouts available. 6) We don't want our seasonal members to miss a month. If you are going to be out of town and need help with Block of Month, please email Pat (
[email protected]) to let her know.

Blotto Committee – Cathy Bluemling and Mary Ann Caggiano
Phyllis Speicher had a very good response to her dragonfly block. Congratulations go to Nan Christiano for being the lucky winner. The varied fabric and color choices for the blocks were delightful and we’re sure Nan’s quilt with be a stunner! Thank you, Phyllis, for another terrific job! Gail Walsh presented the June Blotto. The completed blocks are due at our July Business Meeting. Please turn in your blocks at that time for the drawing. You may be the lucky lady who gets to carry all the blocks home! The Blotto Committee thanks the ladies who have volunteered to sponsor Blotto each month and thanks all of you who participate in this exciting game.
Charity Committee – dee Burns
Many of you have seen Helen Kumpfmiller toting around a large box of fabric strips. If you have not yet been approached to take the box home and stitch up a couple of blocks, we are sure she will get to you! We want to thank Helen and the ladies that have been making the fun and done blocks that are being sewn together for charity quilts. We recently had a work day where many members stitched, ironed and squared up the blocks. These quilts are a great addition to the ones we have received for the Guardian ad Litem program. Thanks again, Helen, for your efforts with the blocks and also for hauling around that huge roll of batting. Thanks to Joyce Doig, we have fabric labels to put on our charity quilts so see any member of the Charity Committee if you need a label.
Demos/Techniques – Joyce Doig and Bev Riley
On July 19th Doris Woodward will be presenting a demo for a fabric basket. The fabric baskets are perfect for holding cookies or on your dresser to catch rings and things at the end of the day. If you would like to participate in this delightful project, you may sign up at the July Business Meeting at which time Doris will provide you with a supplies list. The directions have been previously sent to you via email. Please print the instructions and bring them to the demo as she will not be printing for everyone this time. Doris has constructed samples of the steps. This is not a difficult project and in making the samples, Doris has made a few "discoveries" that might prevent you from making the same "errors." Get your Christmas fabrics out and prepare to have fun. (Instructions also can be found on Pp: 6 & 7 of this Newsletter.)
Display case – Sue Krieck and Carol Goldman
The cheery and colorful display for the month of June was done by Mary Ann Caggiano and Kathy Wink. I hope everyone takes a moment to view the display and reflect on the friendships we have established in our Lake Miona Quilters group. Thank you, ladies. The display case will be filled by Doris Woodward and Bonnie Harshaw for the month of July. Their items will remain in the case for the month of August. For September, we will see what Ronnie Steiner and Ellen Miller will have for us to view. For October it will be Lynn Otwell and Kathy Wink.

A Cup of Coffee with Lynn Otwell
A life of travel is a good way to begin learning about Lynn. Her dad was involved in building military installations during WW II and when she married an engineer the travel hardly abated. She has lived in....ready? S. C., Va., La., Ga., Ca., Tx., DC, Ct., finally Fl. and I'm sure that I didn't get them all. No wonder she is so adaptable and not easily kerfuffled. However, she is a rare DC native born and claims to have a special place in her heart for our nation's capital. Lynn and her husband have been Village people since 2006 and reside in the village of Mallory. They are parents to FIVE (5!!!) boys and seventeen call them Grandpa and Grandma. The Hallmark company almost went under when Lynn took up rubber-stamp greeting card making! Their annual profit margin, I'm sure, went way down when she stopped buying birthday, Christmas, anniversary etc. cards for that clan of hers. Now, one has to develop coping mechanisms to deal with frequent moves and five kids (boys, no less!). Lynn shared a couple of hers with me. One was going on outings to free DC events, packing up the lads and a picnic hamper that was sure to include a thermos of martinis for her and hubby. Another was, of course, quilting. She says she would sit and sew while keeping vigil waiting for one son or another to come home in the evening safe, sound and within curfew. Lynn is a retired RN. She did insurance consulting work and was involved in the field of oncology. In her spare time (HA HA) she was a twenty-year volunteer veteran at a food bank in Virginia. She also enjoys swimming, rug hooking, and the above-mentioned rubber-stamping. Just about her only travel now is up to the DC area to visit her little tribe. Guess she's had ENUF already! Thanks for a nice interview, Lynn. "Til August, Donna
