The opportunity to refuel is a key component to doing great work in schools. Dear United ISD Community, This year marks the 55th Anniversary of United ISD where we are proud to continue our Tradition of Excellence in Education. It is my pleasure to serve you as President of the Board of Trustees of United Independent School District. It is my genuine desire to continue enhancing our district for the benefit of all of our students. I hope that everyone is having a safe and enjoyable summer break. and various clubs. It is exciting to see how many of our students choose to take advantage of these opportunities. The Board of Trustees is very pleased with the progress of multiple projects funded by the 2013 School Bond. At present, we are in the final stages of building 9th grade campuses for United High School and United South High School. We will begin construction of the 9th Grade Campus for Alexander High School this year. A new elementary campus and a new middle school campus off Hwy. 359 are close to completion. The work on new class and lab areas at Arndt and Trautmann Elementary Schools has been completed. We are also well underway with construction of improvement projects at Newman and Trautmann Elementary Schools, Clark Middle School and Alexander High School. School safety continues to be a priority of the Board of Trustees. The District has invested in many initiatives to improve school safety such as the assignment of police officers to every campus, controlled access to buildings, the UWatch Program, and Anti-bullying Curriculum. However,

the community, the administrators, the teachers, the parents and the students must work together in order to make our schools as safe as possible. We continue to request that everyone be vigilant regarding any possibility of threat of violence to our schools and to immediately report any concerns to our police staff or our school administrators. In closing, I encourage our parents to work with our teachers and campus administrators to assist them in their efforts to help our students achieve their fullest potential. Our staff will continue to set high expectations for students so that they may be well prepared to meet their future challenges in life. Quick Fact for Texas Residents: A signed affidavit must be presented by the

child’s parent or legal guardian, stating that the child’s parent or legal guardian declines vaccinations for reasons of conscience, including because of the person’s religious beliefs. The affidavit will be valid for a two-year period. The child, who has not received the required immunizations for reasons of conscience, including religious beliefs, may be excluded from school in times of emergency or epidemic declared by the commissioner of public health. Medical exemptions are allowed as are exemptions for active duty members of the United States armed forces.

Prescription Medications in School Nurses across the district have seen a rise in students carrying their own medications. To ensure that all students are kept safe it is United ISD’s policy and proactive approach to prohibit any student from carrying any kind of medication, prescribed or over the counter, without proper documentation from a physician licensed to practice in the state of Texas.

Medications students are not allowed to carry are, but not limited to the following: Cough drops, any chewable medications, throat sprays, etc. Students who have pre-existing medical conditions that require a school nurse to administer medications are encouraged to proactively communicate their needs to school personnel prior to the start of the school year to ensure that all the proper documentation is submitted on time. Parents are responsible for keeping school personnel up to date and informed of any potential allergic reactions to medications or foods, and any medical conditions.

Since United ISD policy prohibits students from carrying their own medication, it is very important to have a physician licensed to practice in the state of Texas complete all district Medical Administration Forms needed for campus nurses to administer the medications; whether prescribed or over the counter. Children, whose doctors recommend they carry their medications due to a pre-existing condition, will need to pick up a Self-Administration Medication Release Form from their school and have their physician’s office complete the form. After having a doctor complete all the necessary paperwork parents will need to bring in the medication in a properly labeled container. For prescription medication it is recommended that the pharmacy label accompany the medication. All physician orders must match the orders on the container of the prescribed medication. Only when all of the proper documentation is received will school nurses administer or allow students to carry and self-administer their medications. These practices are set to not just protect your student, but all students. It is our effort to ensure that students’ needs are met while maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all students.

Meeting the Needs of Students with Bond Projects In School Bond 2013, voters approved the new construction of 14 new schools, renovations to older facilities, as well as updates to technology and security throughout the District. United ISD is currently at Phase 2 of the construction bond process with several improvements, renovations, and new structures already in place.

New Schools On The Way United High School and United South High School ninth grade students can expect to attend a brand new campus which is set to open in August 2017. While construction of a new 9th grade campus at J.B. Alexander High School started this summer and is projected to open in Fall 2018. United ISD has also begun construction of elementary school #28 and middle school #10 off Highway 359, while ground has been recently broken in the San Isidro Ranch North Subdivision where elementary school #29 will be built. These new campuses will provide much needed relief for existing schools in these areas as well as provide incoming students with innovative classrooms that will help advance students into the future.

Upgrade of Security Stations at School Campuses Another crucial component of the District’s bond construction program includes the installation of security stations and security surveillance camera systems at all of its existing 41 campuses. The work here entails facilitating each site with a security area reinforced with safety features, building access controls, and card reader locking systems for exterior perimeter doors. Construction of these security stations has been started at seven elementary schools throughout the District and will be operational beginning this Fall.

Upgrade of Technology An additional component on School Bond 2013, is the installation of V-Brick (Video distribution system). The V-Brick system allows for the delivery of educational video content to any computer in United ISD using the Districtwide network connection. This system enables educators across the District to provide students with innovative learning opportunities using the most up-to-date products on the market. United ISD values opportunities to provide students and staff with up to date, innovative resources needed in today’s modern classrooms. Other major projects and upgrades will be phased in throughout the next three years, with the final phase set to begin as early as 2017.

Renovations Making a Difference

Renovations and improvements to existing school campuses are also a pivotal component of School Bond 2013. The expansion of the Band Hall at Clark Middle School has been completed and will be ready for occupancy this Fall. While the expansion of the cafeteria and the enclosure of the kinder classroom canopy at Newman Elementary School will be completed this Summer and will be ready to use by students and staff in Fall 2016. At Trautmann Elementary School, students can expect to see an additional classroom wing, a new gymnasium, and renovations to the main building to include new administrative offices. Additionally, each classroom will have new air conditioning and heating and ventilation systems. Arndt Elementary School will be receiving a brand new classroom wing addition and the parking lot at the campus will be expanded. These projects are expected to be completed by the Fall 2016. The expansion of the Food Production Center located off of Loop 20 has been completed, providing additional storage space for food products.

Be a Parent Volunteer:


Sign up today! Research shows that when parents get involved in their child’s educational endeavors, the more likely they will achieve higher grades in school and graduate. This is why United ISD highly values parental involvement and encourages them to be an approved parent volunteer at their child’s campus. Approved parent volunteers can go on field trips with their children and their classmates, help out with class events, and even coach sport teams offered by the Boys and Girls Club. Parents also have the liberty to volunteer whenever their schedule permits. In order to be a parent volunteer at United ISD for the upcoming school year, all parents (returning and new) are required to complete an application and clear a no-cost background check that is provided by the District. Additionally, new applicants must provide proof of a recent T.B. test.

Applications for parent volunteers can be printed out for completion by visiting www.uisd.net and clicking on the “For Parents” section. Applications may also be picked up at school campuses or at the District’s Admissions/Attendance/Drop Out Recovery Office located at 201 Lindenwood Drive.

Liz Raymond, Adult Literacy/Dropout Recovery Coordinator, reminds parents that volunteering time to the District is one of the best ways to get involved in their child’s education. “We invite more parents, grandparents, and older siblings to become volunteers. Joining the District’s program gives volunteers an excellent opportunity to meet and
interact directly with the teachers, administrators and staff at the campuses.” The application process for the 2016 - 2017 school year begins on August 1, 2016, and new applications are valid thru July 31, 2017. The extended end date gives parents an opportunity to assist with summer activities as well. Parents who volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club must also be cleared with United ISD. United ISD is always looking for new and innovative ways to facilitate proactive communication between schools and parents; therefore, the District is pleased to continue with the Parent Portal. Parent Portal is a secure and direct program where parents can access student schedules, track grades, and monitor student attendance. It’s like a daily progress report for your child that you can access anytime.

Once this has been received, the district will email you a password and you’ll be set. Perfect Attendance Program Continues for all Students

Student success begins with daily school attendance. This is why United ISD will once again be implementing its “Every Day Counts” perfect attendance incentive program for the upcoming school year. Any elementary and middle school student, who works to attain perfect attendance every six weeks, can be eligible to win prizes at their respective campus. “One of the most important things a child can do in their academic career to achieve success is also one of the most basic… that is go to school every day,” said United ISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. “In fact, research has shown that a child’s daily school attendance record may be the biggest factor influencing their academic success.”

All students at an elementary or middle school are eligible to be entered for the grand prize drawing at their campus if he or she has had perfect attendance (no

excused or unexcused absences) for the entire six weeks period starting with the 1st six weeks period (in all classes).

Additionally, students at each high school will have a perfect attendance incentive as well. Called the “Never Be Absent” program, students who have perfect attendance have a chance to have their name entered to win an all-expense paid trip to San Antonio which includes a four day, three night stay at the J.W. Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa, four season passes to Fiesta Texas, and four movie passes to Santikos Palladium IMAX Theatre. This program, is being done in conjunction with the Sames “Kia in the Klassroom” car givea-way program, where a high school student can win a brand new Kia Soul. Using Google Chromebooks to Build Collaborative Skills The District’s iLEAD United Mobile Learning Device (MLD) Initiative continues to support and enhance its curriculum and instruction with the infusion of over 4,300 Chromebooks into classrooms for the 2016-2017 school year. The Chromebooks are similar to laptops that run through the internet. These devices use Google Applications (Docs, Sheets and Slides) that are similar in functionality of their well-known counterparts, Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint. During the Summer of 2013, the District initiated its iLEAD United MLD Roll Out and to date has placed over 13,700 iPads, 900 HP tablets and this Fall with the newest roll out over 6,000 Chromebooks in the hands of students and teachers. The infusion of Chromebooks in our classrooms is directly in response to the District Technology Committee’s recommendation that United become a District powered by Google Apps for Education. A decision that has propelled United ISD into the 21st century collaborative Google environment that allows teachers, students, administrators and staff to gather, send, receive and share information using a collaborative cloud-based environment. The 2016-17 school year will be greeted with campuses receiving 144 carts of Chromebooks. District Curriculum will be sporting new lessons and activities that correspond with the use of the new devices. Training for new and existing district teachers and staff will be provided during the Summer, New Teacher Orientation and Back to School Trainings by Instructional Technology district and campus staff to prepare them to maximize the integration of academic use of devices.

Several teacher members of the DEIC Committee recently reported how much they have enjoyed the addition of Chromebooks in their classrooms. They all observed the incredible increase in student engagement, collaboration, interaction and most notably the improvement in academics using the integration of Chromebooks and the interactive flat panels into daily instruction. The District continues to remain at the forefront of the most recent and trending instructional technology equipment and integration initiatives to keep our students abreast of the requirements needed to be a successful 21st century citizen.

United ISD continues to honor Distinguished Alumni. United ISD will begin to accept nominations for the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Class from November 1, 2016 through January, 31, 2017. If you know of any outstanding United ISD Alumni please submit their nomination to the Office of the Superintendent. CRITERIA: An alumnus who is being nominated for the award must have graduated from a United ISD High school at least 5 years from date of nomination. This recognition can be earned by demonstrating, outstanding service to our country, community or to others in need; also for achieving recognition, having made exceptional contributions to his/her profession or career; and lastly for philanthropy, those who have made significant contributions in their field/community; and/or to any worthy cause. Members of the community or of the selection committee may nominate an individual who fits the criteria. The individual making the nomination shall submit details/resume about the individual including the achievements of the individual. The documentation shall include references (either written documentation or personal reference) that can verify the achievement(s). Prior to the first graduation ceremony on June 3, Sames KIA of Laredo announced this year’s winner of a brand new 2016 KIA Soul. The grand prize automobile giveaway was the peak of the year round Sames “KIA In the Klassroom” program at United ISD. The program gives students (who maintain perfect attendance for at least one nine week period), an opportunity to participate in a final drawing for a brand new KIA Soul. In addition, tax, title and the Laredo Federal Credit Union paid for license for the prize automobile, and the A&K World Class Driving School donated a complimentary driver’s education course. Leobardo Vasquez, a sophomore from Lyndon B. Johnson High School was the grand prizewinner from among 16 semi-finalists whose names were drawn at random. The remaining 15 semi-finalists received a free tablet from Sames KIA as well. “Sames KIA is proud to be the sponsor of this program for a fourth year, and we are pleased to see that this incentive has succeeded in promoting academic success,” said Sames Motors C.E.O. Evelyn Sames. “We stand behind this initiative to emphasize the importance of daily school attendance and wish the Class of 2016 continued success.” For the fourth year in a row, Sames KIA of Laredo will be partnering with United ISD for the “KIA in the Klassroom” Perfect Attendance Car Give-A-Way. This now-yearly program has seen remarkable success in promoting the District’s rates of perfect attendance for its high school students. “Sames is proud to support local education - one of the pillars upon which we have built our 105 year legacy,” said Sames Principal Dealer Evelyn Sames. “We know that when students skip out of school, they miss the valuable lessons being taught in the classroom.” The “KIA in the Klassroom” program will be conducted in conjunction with the District’s “Never Be Absent” Perfect Attendance Program. School Day for High School Students

In an effort to help accommodate its students’ increasingly busy curricular and extra-curricular schedules and help improve academic performance; United ISD has conducted an analysis of the school day at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. It has been determined based on this analysis that the high school daily schedule will be extended beginning the 2016 - 2017 school year. The additional 20 minutes added to the high school schedule allows students the opportunity to be considered full time students upon enrollment in three or more classes each semester. This allows students to continue to participate in extracurricular activities, additional opportunities to attend institutions of higher education, complete volunteer work, or join the workforce in our community. The District also believes that this slight modification to the high school schedule will result in improved grades and test scores. As such, the new bell schedule at each of the high schools for the 2016 - 2017 school year will be as follows:

UT Austin - United ISD Partnership to Support Mathematics Education The University of Texas at Austin and the United Independent School District (United ISD) are partnering to offer college credit to mathematics students in United ISD high schools. The partnership will prepare four United ISD teachers to deliver “Discovery Pre-Calculus.” The course is part of UT Austin’s new dual-credit initiative, OnRamps. Estimados padres de familia de United ISD, Me complace mucho compartir con ustedes nuestra edición “Regreso a clases” 2016-2017 de la publicación Parent Connection de United ISD y espero que hayan disfrutado de un espléndido verano en compañía de su familia. La oportunidad de recargarnos de energía es un componente fundamental para realizar un buen trabajo en las escuelas. Es un placer fungir como presidente de la Mesa Directiva de United Independent School District y mi deseo es continuar enalteciendo a nuestro distrito para beneficio de todos los estudiantes. una nueva escuela primaria y una secundaria a un lado de la carretera 359. De igual manera, el trabajo en las áreas de salones de clases y laboratorios en la primaria Arndt está a punto de concluir. También hemos iniciado los proyectos de mejoras en las primarias Newman y Trautmann, en la secundaria Clark y en la preparatoria Alexander. La seguridad escolar continúa siendo una prioridad de la mesa directiva. El distrito ha invertido en muchas iniciativas para mejorarla, tales como la asignación de oficiales de policía en cada escuela, acceso controlado a los edificios, el programa UWatch y el plan de estudios contra el acoso escolar. Continúan proyectos del bono escolar 2013 Con la aprobación del bono escolar 2013 se acordó la construcción de 14 escuelas y renovaciones a instalaciones existentes, así como actualizaciones al sistema de tecnología y seguridad en el distrito. United ISD se encuentra actualmente en la Fase 2 del bono de construcción con varias mejoras, renovaciones y nuevas estructuras.

Construcción de nuevas escuelas Los estudiantes de 9no grado de las preparatorias United y United South asistirán a un nueva escuela, la cual está programada para abrir sus puertas en agosto de 2017. Mientras, la construcción de un nuevo campus de 9no grado comenzó en la preparatoria J.B. Alexander este verano y se espera que se inaugure para el otoño de 2018. United ISD también ha iniciado la construcción de la escuela primaria #28 y la secundaria #10 a un lado de la carretera 359, mientras que ya se empezó a desmontar el terreno para la construcción de la escuela primaria #29 en la subdivisión San Isidro Ranch North. Estas nuevas escuelas proporcionarán el tan necesitado alivio a la sobrepoblación estudiantil para los planteles existentes en estas áreas, así como brindarán a los estudiantes de nuevo ingreso aulas innovadoras que ayudarán a que los alumnos se abran paso al futuro.

Actualización de tecnología Un componente adicional del bono escolar 2013 es la instalación de V-Brick (sistema de distribución de video). Este sistema permite la transmisión de contenido educativo por video en cualquier computadora de United ISD utilizando la conexión de internet del distrito. También permite que los maestros del distrito proporcionen a los estudiantes oportunidades educativas innovadoras utilizando los productos más actualizados en el mercado. United ISD valora las oportunidades para proporcionar a los estudiantes y personal con los recursos innovadores que se necesitan en las aulas modernas. Otros proyectos y actualizaciones importantes se introducirán gradualmente durante los próximos tres años, con la fase final contemplada para comenzar a más tardar a principios de 2017.

Renovaciones que marcan la diferencia Las renovaciones y mejoras a los planteles escolares existentes también son un componente fundamental del bono escolar 2013. La expansión del salón para la banda de la secundaria Clark ya se ha terminado y estará listo para utilizarse este otoño. La expansión de la cafetería y la construcción de una cerca en el toldo existente de los salones de preescolar en la escuela primaria Newman se completarán este verano y estarán listos para los estudiantes y el personal en el otoño. En la primaria Trautmann, los estudiantes tendrán un ala de salones adicionales, un nuevo gimnasio y renovaciones en el edificio principal con nuevas oficinas administrativas. Además, cada salón de clases contará con sistema nuevo de aire acondicionado y de calefacción y ventilación. La primaria Arndt contará con un ala adicional de salones y se ampliará el estacionamiento. Se espera que estos proyectos se terminen para este otoño. La ampliación del Centro de Producción Alimenticia, localizado a un lado del Loop 20, ya se ha terminado, proveyendo espacio adicional para el almacenamiento de alimentos.

Modernización de estaciones de seguridad en las escuelas Otro componente crucial del programa de construcción del bono del distrito incluye la instalación de estaciones de seguridad y sistemas de cámaras de vigilancia y seguridad en todos los 41 planteles existentes. El trabajo aquí implica facilitar cada sitio con un área de seguridad reforzada con aplicaciones de seguridad, la construcción de controles de acceso y sistemas de bloqueo de lectores de tarjetas para las puertas del perímetro exterior. La construcción de estas estaciones de seguridad ya ha iniciado en siete escuelas primarias del distrito y estarán listas para su operación a partir de este otoño.

Universidad de Texas en Austin y United ISD se asocian para apoyar educación en matemáticas La Universidad de Texas en Austin y United Independent School District se han asociado para ofrecer crédito de colegio a los estudiantes de matemáticas en escuelas preparatorias del distrito. Esta asociación capacitará a cuatro maestros de United ISD para impartir la clase “Descubrimiento de Precálculo”. El curso forma parte de la nueva iniciativa de doble crédito OnRamps de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. United ISD y la Universidad de Texas en Austin ofrecerán el plan de estudios de un año a los estudiantes de preparatoria con la opción de inscripción doble en un curso de colegio de la Universidad de Texas en Austin a través de la Extensión Universitaria. “Parte del objetivo de la iniciativa OnRamps es desarrollar un grupo de maestros en el estado de Texas que ofrezcan crédito doble al nivel de

rigurosidad requerido para preparar a los alumnos en sus cursos de colegio posteriores”, explicó la Dra. Julie Schell, Directora de OnRamps e Iniciativas Estratégicas en el Centro de Enseñanza y Aprendizaje en la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Esta sociedad entre la Universidad de Texas en Austin y United ISD representa el objetivo de la iniciativa OnRamps de colaborar con maestros innovadores para incrementar el número y diversidad de estudiantes que experimenten trabajo de curso riguroso, de calidad y de crédito doble y que desarrollen un conocimiento conceptual y habilidades académicas de acuerdo con las expectativas de las más prestigiadas universidades de investigación. Uso de computadoras portátiles desarrolla habilidades de colaboración La iniciativa iLEAD de Aparatos Móviles de Aprendizaje (Mobile Learning Divice - MLD) del distrito continúa apoyando y mejorando su plan de estudios y enseñanza con el uso de 4,300 computadoras Chromebook en los salones de clase en el ciclo escolar 2016-2017. Las computadoras Chromebook son similares a las computadoras portátiles que funcionan a través de Internet. Estos aparatos utilizan aplicaciones Google (documentos, hojas y diapositivas) que son similares a la funcionalidad de sus tan conocidas contrapartes, Microsoft Office Word, Excel y PowerPoint. Durante el verano de 2013, el distrito implementó la iniciativa iLEAD MLD de United y, a la fecha, ha hecho entrega de 13,700 iPads, 900 tabletas HP y este otoño, hará entrega de más de 6,000 computadoras Chromebook a estudiantes y maestros. La introducción de estas computadoras Chromebook en nuestros salones de clase es en respuesta a la recomendación del Comité de Tecnología de que United sea un distrito que utilice las aplicaciones Google para su educación. Esta decisión ha llevado a United ISD al entorno de colaboración Google del siglo 21 que permite a maestros, estudiantes, administradores y personal en general reunir, enviar, recibir y compartir información utilizando un entorno de colaboración con base en la nube. El ciclo escolar 2016-2017 iniciará con escuelas que recibirán 144 carritos llenos de computadoras Chromebook. El plan de estudios del distrito impartirá lecciones y actividades nuevas que correspondan al uso de estos aparatos nuevos. Se llevará a cabo una capacitación para maestros actuales y de nuevo ingreso y para personal durante el verano, una orientación para maestros de nuevo ingreso y capacitaciones para el regreso a clases y personal escolar de parte del Departamento de Tecnología de Enseñanza del distrito para prepararlos para maximizar la integración del uso académico de los aparatos.

Varios miembros maestros del Comité DEIC informaron recientemente lo mucho que han disfrutado de la implementación de computadoras Chromebook en sus salones. Han observado un gran aumento en la participación, colaboración, interacción de los estudiantes y, en especial, una mejoría en la enseñanza utilizando la integración de computadoras Chromebook y pantallas interactivas. El distrito continúa estando a la vanguardia en el equipo de informática académica e implementando iniciativas para mantener a los alumnos a la par de los requisitos necesarios para convertirse en ciudadanos exitosos del siglo 21.

Medicamentos en la escuela

Las enfermeras del distrito han visto un aumento en los estudiantes que llevan sus propios medicamentos. Para preservar el bienestar de todos los alumnos, la política de United ISD y un enfoque proactivo prohíben que los estudiantes traigan consigo cualquier medicamento, recetado o de venta libre, sin la debida documentación de un médico autorizado para ejercer en el estado de Texas. Los medicamentos que no se permite que los estudiantes lleven consigo son, pero no se limitan a, los siguientes: pastillas para la tos, cualquier medicamento masticable, aerosoles para la garganta, etc. Se exhorta a que los alumnos con una enfermedad médica pre-existente que requieren de la administración de un medicamento por parte de la enfermera escolar comuniquen de manera proactiva sus necesidades al personal antes de iniciar el ciclo escolar para asegurar que toda la documentación requerida se presente oportunamente. Los padres son responsables de mantener al personal escolar actualizado e informado de las posibles reacciones alérgicas a medicamentos o alimentos y cualquier condición médica. Debido a que la política del distrito prohíbe que los alumnos lleven consigo sus propios medicamentos, es

muy importante que un médico autorizado para ejercer en el estado de Texas llene todos los formularios de administración médica del distrito requeridos para que las enfermeras escolares lo administren, ya sea recetado o de venta libre. Los estudiantes, cuyos médicos recomienden llevar consigo los medicamentos debido a una enfermedad médica pre-existente, tendrán que recoger en su escuela un formulario de Autorización para auto-administración de medicamentos y llevarlo con su médico para que lo llene. Después de que el médico haya contestado toda la documentación necesaria, los padres necesitan llevar el medicamento en un recipiente debidamente etiquetado. Se recomienda que los medicamentos recetados traigan la etiqueta de la farmacia donde se adquirieron. Todas las órdenes de los médicos deben coincidir con lo escrito en el envase del medicamento. Solamente cuando se hayan recibido todos los documentos requeridos la enfermera escolar administrará o permitirá que los alumnos lleven consigo sus medicamentos para su auto-administración. Se establecen estos requisitos no solamente para proteger a su hijo, sino a todos los estudiantes. Es nuestro esfuerzo para asegurar que se cumpla con las necesidades de los alumnos mientras se mantiene un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro y positivo para todos.

Este programa permite que los contribuyentes de United ISD, de 60 años o mayores, puedan asistir gratuitamente a cualquier evento deportivo o de bellas artes patrocinado por United ISD que se lleve a cabo en cualquiera de sus instalaciones durante todo el ciclo escolar. Estos eventos incluyen: juegos deportivos, actividades de arte, eventos de porristas y baile y presentaciones de música o drama. Para solicitar una tarjeta gratuitamente, favor de acudir al Departamento de Deportes del distrito, ubicado en 5208 Santa Claudia Lane. Continúa programa de Asistencia Perfecta en primarias y secundarias

El aprovechamiento escolar estudiantil empieza con una asistencia perfecta. Por este motivo, United ISD implementará nuevamente el próximo ciclo escolar “Cada día cuenta”, programa incentivo de asistencia perfecta. Cualquier alumno de primaria y secundaria que obtenga una asistencia perfecta cada periodo de seis semanas puede ser elegible para obtener premios en su respectiva escuela. “Una de las cosas más importantes y básica que un estudiante puede hacer durante su estudios académicos para obtener un mejor aprovechamiento es asistir diariamente a clases”, dijo Roberto J. Santos, superintendente de United ISD. “De hecho, las investigaciones han demostrado que la asistencia escolar diaria del estudiante puede ser el factor más importante para lograr un buen desempeño escolar”. Todos los alumnos que asistan a primaria o secundaria son elegibles para participar en el sorteo de grandes premios que se lleva a cabo en su escuela, si tiene una asistencia perfecta (sin una ausencia justificada o injustificada) en todo un periodo de seis semanas, iniciando

con el primer periodo de seis semanas (en todas las materias).

Además, los alumnos de cada preparatoria tendrán también un incentivo por asistencia perfecta. En el programa “Never Be Absent”, los estudiantes con asistencia perfecta tienen la oportunidad de participar en el sorteo de un viaje a San Antonio con todo pagado, el cual incluye una estancia de cuatro días y tres noches en el J.W. Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa, cuatro pases de temporada para Fiesta Texas y cuatro pases para el cine en el teatro IMAX del Santikos Palladium. Esto se lleva a cabo junto con el programa “Kia in the Klassroom” de Sames, donde un estudiante de preparatoria puede ganar un auto nuevo Kia Soul. Nuevo horario escolar para estudiantes de preparatoria En un esfuerzo por programar los horarios de clases y actividades extracurriculares de los estudiantes y por mejorar su desempeño académico, United ISD llevó a cabo un análisis del día de clases en escuelas primarias, secundarias y preparatorias. En base a este análisis, se ha determinado que el horario escolar de preparatoria se prolongará a partir del ciclo escolar 2016 - 2017. Los 20 minutos que se añadieron al horario de preparatoria permite a los alumnos la oportunidad de ser considerados como estudiantes de tiempo completo al inscribirse en tres clases o más cada semestre. Esto permite que continúen participando en actividades extracurriculares, que tengan oportunidades adicionales para asistir a instituciones de educación superior, que completen su trabajo de voluntarios o que formen parte de la fuerza laboral de nuestra comunidad. El distrito también está convencido de que este pequeño ajuste al horario escolar de preparatoria tendrá como resultado que los estudiantes saquen mejores calificaciones y puntuaciones en los exámenes. Por lo tanto, el nuevo horario de clases en cada una de las preparatorias para el ciclo escolar 2016 - 2017 será el siguiente:

United ISD está buscando siempre nuevas e innovadoras maneras para facilitar una comunicación proactiva entre las escuelas y los padres de familia y por este motivo hemos decidido llevar ante ustedes el Portal para Padres. El Portal para Padres es un programa seguro y directo donde los padres pueden tener acceso a horarios de los estudiantes, pueden revisar sus calificaciones y vigilar la asistencia estudiantil. Exhortamos a todos los padres a inscribirse en el programa contestando un sencillo Formulario de Inscripción en el Portal para Padres en la escuela de su hijo. Una vez que éste se haya recibido, el distrito le enviará por correo electrónico una contraseña y ¡listo! Al tener acceso al Portal para Padres podrá recuperar el sitio de la página web del distrito y agregarlo a sus páginas electrónicas favoritas para poder ingresar en cualquier momento y en cualquier lugar que desee. Es muy sencillo, es fácil y es la mejor manera para mantenerse al día y supervisar diariamente el progreso de sus hijos. para ser padre voluntario

Investigaciones muestran que los hijos cuyos padres participan en sus actividades académicas, tienen mayores probabilidades de obtener mejores calificaciones en la escuela y graduar. Es por esto que United ISD valora la participación de los padres y los exhorta a convertirse en voluntarios autorizados por la escuela de sus hijos. Los padres voluntarios autorizados pueden acompañar a los alumnos y sus hijos en excursiones escolares, ayudar en los eventos del salón y hasta entrenar a los equipos deportivos del Boys and Girls Club. Los padres también tienen la libertad de ser voluntarios cuando sus ocupaciones se los permitan. Para convertirse en voluntarios de United ISD para el próximo ciclo escolar, se requiere que los padres (de estudiantes actuales y de nuevo ingreso) llenen una solicitud y que aprueben la revisión del historial criminal que brinda el distrito sin costo alguno. Además, los solicitantes nuevos deben entregar prueba de un examen reciente de tuberculosis.
