Dear Brother and Sisters, Saint Luke learned something about story telling from Jesus. He used just 350 words to tell a tale that has enchanted countless generations. Luke set his narrative on the world’s stage. Augustus, he said, was emperor and Quirinius governor of Syria when Joseph and Mary journeyed to Bethlehem to register in Caesar’s census. There was no room in the Inn, so Mary wrapped her baby in swaddling clothes and laid him in a feeding trough. That same night shepherds came streaming in from the hillside to worship him. They spoke of a sky full of angels proclaiming the birth of a savior. Whatever else we see here, two facts are inescapable. One, God’s Son chose to enter our race as one of the homeless. Two, the first people summoned to his birthplace had a dubious reputation. We have romanticized the shepherds but rabbinical writings describe them as “sinners.” Respectable city dwellers kept their hands on their purses when shepherds came to town. Clearly the Savior had taken his place among the homeless and “sinners”. He had not come to lead a political revolt, however. Instead, he would send his disciples into the world to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, care for the ill and imprisoned. Whatever we did for them, he said, we did for him. CNN cameras brought us many a searing image of the final siege of Aleppo in Syria. One particularly moving image was that of a group of orphans attempting to leave their ruined city. They were utterly helpless as they made multiple attempts to leave their home. It was a contemporary image of the Holy Family -- poor, displaced, powerless. If God had chosen this December 25th to be born, where would we look for him? A PADS shelter in New York or Los Angeles? A ruined home in Aleppo? God has entered our history and weighed in on the side of the poor and powerless. Those adjectives pretty well describe us as a nation and a church. We are the most powerful nation on earth and the most prosperous but we have learned the limits of power and seen the economic effects of 2008 . We are a holy church yet clearly in need of reform. Our recent history compels us to join the shepherds and hurry to find our Savior in a special way this Christmas. Always forward! Msgr. Art

Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass All are invited to attend the Mass which celebrates the joy of Christian marriage, but this Mass is especially intended for those celebrating 15+ years in 2017. It will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Arboretum at Christ Cathedral. Isaías 52:7-10 Hebreos 1:1-6 Juan 1:1-18 [1-5, 9-14] Tema: “Os traigo una Buena Noticia, una gran alegría: nos ha nacido un Salvador, el Mesías, el Señor”

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Ya hemos llegado: es NAVIDAD. Podéis pensar: “ya lo sabemos; no hace falta que insistas”. Pues… nada. Sólo digo que es NAVIDAD. Y aquí, en estas palabras, hay ALGO MUY GRANDE y hermoso. ¡Feliz NAVIDAD! ¡Feliz descubrimiento de ese secreto oculto! La Comunidad cristiana en la Navidad celebra la venida de Jesús, el Hijo amado de Dios. Y su venida salvadora (eso significa “mesiánica”) es una etapa decisiva en la historia del Reino y un acercamiento insospechado del advenimiento de Dios. La fe de los cristianos celebra el misterio de la Palabra hecha carne. La Navidad, especialmente, es palabra densa, real, sustancial porque es profunda revelación, e inmensa manifestación. Palabra significa revelación personal, apertura de lo más personal de Dios: su amor, su misericordia, su paternidad, su entrañable ternura. Sin la Navidad, sin la encarnación, nuestra vivencia de Dios habría estado sometida a aberraciones, porque nos faltaría la luz de esta revelación. Gracias a la Palabra hecha carne sabemos que el Dios verdadero no es el «Dios de los filósofos», el Dios teísta, sino el que comparte nuestro destino en todo, el que entra en el juego y el riesgo de la historia, que es el riesgo de la muerte. Por tanto, su cercanía al hombre cobra una proximidad inusitada. Dios echa sobre sus espaldas todo el rebajamiento y humildad de los pobres, los oprimidos, los olvidados, y así nos descubre un rostro de Dios que nosotros no nos hubiéramos atrevido a imaginar. Tras la encarnación, Dios es Señor no por la fuerza, sino por la humildad; no por el poder, sino por la debilidad; no por la coacción, sino por el silencio. Ese es el lenguaje inefable de la Palabra hecha carne; un lenguaje de actos, de amor, de verdad profunda y personal. Lo que ocurre es que cada uno ponemos contenidos muy distintos detrás de la palabra NAVIDAD. ¡Cómo no! Y mira que para un cristiano, la Navidad tiene que ser ALGO, algo distinto de lo que se ve en la calle… Por eso, “CONTEMPLO BELÉN” y… efectivamente, es algo NUEVO, es algo DESCONCERTANTE: es tanta la sencillez, la humildad de Belén, que definitivamente, confieso que la NAVIDAD cristiana es DIFERENTE. ¿Quieres saber lo que es la Navidad? CONTEMPLA BELÉN: no hay otra forma de saberlo. Acércate; no le tengas miedo. ¡Sólo es un niño! ¡FELIZ NAVIDAD! ¡Anímate: “CONTEMPLA BELÉN”!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, San Lucas aprendió algo narrando la historia de Jesús. Utilizó solamente 350 palabras para describir la historia que ha cautivado numerosas generaciones. Lucas estableció su relato en el escenario mundial. Augusto, dijo él, era el emperador y Cirenio el gobernador de Siria durante la travesía de José y María hacia Belén pretendiendo registrarse en el censo del Cesar. No había cupo en la posada, así que María envolvió a su bebé en su ropita y lo acostó en un pesebre. Esa misma noche pastorcillos llegaron para adorarle desde la ladera. Hablaban de un cielo lleno de ángeles proclamando el nacimiento de un salvador. Qué más vemos aquí, dos hechos que son inexplicables. Uno, el Hijo de Dios eligió ser parte de nuestra especie como un vagabundo, sin hogar. Dos, las primeras personas convocadas al lugar de su nacimiento tenían una reputación dudosa. Hemos elevado a los pastorcillos, sin embargo los escritos rabínicos los describen como “pecadores”. Habitantes respetables de la ciudad mantenían sus manos en sus bolsas cuando los pastorcillos visitaban el pueblo. Claramente el Salvador había tomado su lugar entre los vagabundos y “pecadores”. Él no había venido a dirigir una rebelión política. Sin embargo, él mandaría a sus discípulos al mundo para alimentar al hambriento, refugiar al indigente, vestir al desnudo, cuidar del enfermo y preso. Lo que se hiciera por ellos, dijo él, se lo haríamos a Él. Cámaras del canal CNN nos trajeron varias imágenes fuertes del fin del trono en Alepo en Siria. Una imagen particularmente conmovedora fue la de un grupo de huérfanos atentando abandonar su ciudad en ruinas. Ellos intentaron abandonar su hogar múltiples veces pero estaban completamente desamparados. Era una imagen contemporánea de la Sagrada Familia – pobre, desplazada, desamparada. ¿Si Dios hubiese escogido el 25 de diciembre para nacer, dónde lo buscaríamos? ¿En un refugio de emergencia en Nueva York o Los Ángeles? ¿En un hogar en ruinas en Alepo? Dios ha entrado a nuestra historia al lado del pobre e indefenso. Esas cualidades prácticamente nos describen como una nación y como una iglesia. Somos la nación más poderosa en la tierra y la más floreciente pero hemos aprendido los límites de nuestro poder y hemos visto los efectos económicos del 2008. Somos una iglesia santa sin embargo claramente en necesidad de una reforma. Nuestra reciente historia nos impulsa a unirnos a los pastorcillos y nos apresura a encontrar a nuestro Salvador esta Navidad en un forma especial. ¡Siempre adelante! Mons. Art

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE 25 de diciembre del 2016 Hoy celebramos el nacimiento de Jesús, comenzando con la Misa de Gallo. A esta Misa se le añade la tradición popular que ha comenzado en el hogar con pesebres, comidas y regalos. Se nos haría difícil imaginar terminar el año sin la Navidad. Pero el calendario cristiano sólo la ha festejado algunos 1800 años. Los primeros cristianos únicamente celebraban la Pascua de Resurrección, siguiendo lo que todos los evangelios nos relatan de los eventos de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús. Sólo Mateo y Lucas mencionan su nacimiento. Alrededor del año 200 d.C., los cristianos egipcios empezaron a conmemorar el nacimiento de Jesús el 20 de marzo que era el noveno mes de su calendario. Con el tiempo, la idea de festejar el nacimiento del Mesías se extendió a otras comunidades cristianas, pero con diversas fechas como el 19 de abril, el 6 de enero, el 28 de marzo y otras. Fue hasta el siglo cuarto que se fijó la fecha para el 25 de diciembre, gracias a Juan Crisóstomo y al Papa Julio I. Otras fuentes señalan que en el año 366 los cristianos comenzaron a celebrar el nacimiento de Cristo, sol de justicia, precisamente el 25 de diciembre.
