In our times the ministry of communion of the sick and viaticum for the dying is no longer limited to priests and deacons. The Church, in the knowledge that frequent communion is important to the sick as it is for those in good health, has extended this ministry to lay persons." (U.S. Conference of Bishops) About Saint Camillus Saint Camillus de Lellis was born at Bocchianico, Italy. He devoted himself to caring for the sick, and became director of Saint Giacomo Hospital in Rome. He received permission from his confessor (Saint Philip Neri) to be ordained and decided, with two companions, to found his own congregation, the Ministers of the Sick (the Camellians), dedicated to the care of the sick. He was canonized in 1746, was declared patron of the sick, with Saint John of God, by Pope Leo XIII, and patron of nurses and nursing groups by Pope Pius XI. His feast day is July 18th. Mission Statement The Saint Camillus Ministry at Saint Patrick serves the sick and the homebound of the parish by bringing them the precious body of Our Lord in the form of the Eucharist. Visits are made to hospitals, homes, and extended care facilities in the region. Organization  The Pastor is the head of the Saint Camillus Ministry. He is assisted by the Coordinator of Family Life Ministry.  Other Saint Camillus Ministers may assist in training, coordination and communications.  The administrative contact person for the Saint Camillus Ministry is the Coordinator of Family Life Ministry Becoming a Camillus Minister  Saint Camillus Ministers are first trained as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) by the Liturgical Ministry and then receive additional orientation for ministry to the sick and homebound.  Any Catholic lay person in good standing can become a Saint Camillus Minister. Saint Camillus Ministers are selected by the Pastor and appointed by the Bishop for five years.  Readers and Ushers are welcome to be Saint Camillus Ministers if commissioned as EMHC. 1

Saint Camillus Ministry at Saint Patrick Information & Guidelines Obtaining Hosts  If you are attending Mass, and serving as an EMHC for that Mass, place your pyx on the credence table prior to the beginning of Mass. Place the number of hosts that you need in your pyx. Once you have finished serving the community you may retrieve your pyx from the altar.  If you are attending Mass, but are not serving as an EMHCfor that Mass, you can place your pyx on the credence table prior to the beginning of Mass, placing the number of hosts that you need in your pyx. Following receiving Communion, you can walk up to the altar and retrieve your pyx or following Mass you will be able to retrieve it from in front of tabernacle. You may also wait until Mass is over and go to the tabernacle with your empty pyx and fill it with the number of consecrated hosts needed for your visitation.  If you are making a visit at other times, you will need to obtain consecrated hosts from the tabernacle. Keys to the tabernacle are available in the working sacristy.  Contact the Coordinator of Family Life Ministry if you need a pyx. If you forget your pyx, you will find “extra” pyxes in the working sacristy which you may borrow for your visit. Please return the pyx promptly after your visit as other ministers may need it. Visits  During the visit, follow the guidelines from Communion in Ordinary Circumstances or Communion in a Hospital or Institution from the book The Catholic Handbook for Visiting the Sick and Homebound. Copies of the book can be obtained from the Coordinator of Family Life Ministry.  If others are present, invite them to pray with you. You can give communion to other Catholics.  If you have unused hosts after your visit, consume them. If a recipient spits out a host, place it in a clean napkin or tissue. There are two approved ways of disposal, the sacrarium, (a special sink with a drain going directly into the ground, not the sewer), in the working sacristy or bury it in the ground. If you bury a host, use water to dissolve it. Never dispose of a consecrated host in a sink connected to a sewer or septic system.  You are carrying the Lord with you. Make your visit as soon as possible after obtaining the consecrated hosts. Do not make side-trips. Keep your pyx on your body at all times. Hospital Visits  Saint Patrick visits all Catholics at the Cape Fear Hospital.  You will be given a name badge from Saint Patrick Catholic Church by the Coordinator of Family Life Ministry and you will receive a picture name badge from the information desk, you may need to present your driver’s license, when you enter the hospital.

Saint Camillus Ministry at Saint Patrick Information & Guidelines  The names of Catholics who have listed their religion at time of admittance are on the census kept at the Chaplains’ office. The census list must be returned to the Chaplains’ office once you have completed you visits.  Hospital and Respite cards can be gotten from the copy room of the church office in the Saint Camillus mailbox. Remember to leave a card if the patient is not in the room. This eliminates misunderstandings and the feeling that they were "forgotten".  Respect the patient’s right to privacy by not discussing medical conditions or other confidential information with anyone.  Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before and after visiting each patient.  Obey all postings. If a patient has an NPO sign check with the nurse before giving them a host.  In some cases you may need to don protective clothing, mask etc. before entering the room. Discuss this with the nurse.  If you visit the ICU you will contact the nurses by phone before entering the ICU. The phone is at the ICU entrance.  The hospital staff has always been helpful and is appreciative of those who visit the sick. Extended Care Institutions, Assisted Care and Independent Living Residences  In some cases, arrangements have been made for residents to meet in a common area for a group worship service.  In other cases visits are made in the resident's rooms.  Each care facility is different. It is advisable to get an orientation from someone familiar with the particular care facility so you know the layout, procedures, security requirements, care facility personnel, and residents. Homebound Visits  When you receive a homebound assignment, telephone the home to arrange a suitable time and day to visit, Sundays are the preferred day to visit a homebound parishioner, as they are unable to attend Sunday Mass, but another day can work depending on the homebound member and the visitor’s schedule.  It is usually a good idea to call the day of the visit to confirm and let them know you are on your way. Parish Bulletins  Sick and shut-ins love to receive a copy of the Parish Bulletin to help them keep in touch with the Saint Patrick community.  From time to time the Saint Patrick students make up cards that can be given to the visited. 3

Saint Camillus Ministry at Saint Patrick Information & Guidelines Schedules and Substitutes Schedules for the homebound are created quarter and are emailed to the Saint Camillus Ministers. Please try obtaining a substitute when you cannot cover your assignment. If you are unable to get a substitute contact the Coordinator of Family Life Ministry. Events  Saint Patrick celebrates several Masses each year with Anointing of the Sick which are attended by those who are sick, elderly or in need of healing. The Saint Camillus Ministry assists in these Masses by communicating with the care facilities we visit. Camillus Ministers also assist those attending the Mass and participate in the Liturgy.  The Pastor and Parochial Vicar will celebrate the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the homes of the homebound and of the care facilities we visit. The Saint Camillus Ministry coordinates these Masses with the care facility and help at the Mass. Sacraments of the Sick and Reconciliation A person you are visiting may request a visit by a priest for the Sacrament of the Sick or the Sacrament of Reconciliation. En nuestro tiempo el ministerio de la comunión a los enfermos y el viatico a los que están agonizando ya no se limita solamente a los sacerdotes o diáconos. La iglesia, en el conocimiento que una comunión frecuente es tan importante para los enfermos como para los que se encuentran sanos, ha extendido este ministerio a las personas laicas.” (Conferencia de Obispos de los Estados Unidos) Sobre San Camillo San Camillo de Lellis, nació en Bocchianico, Italia. Saint Camillus Ministry at Saint Patrick Information & Guidelines Obteniendo la Hostia  Si usted está asistiendo a misa, y sirviendo como un MESC en esa misa, coloque la píxide sobre la mesa de credenciales antes del comienzo de la misa. Coloque el número de hostias que necesite dentro de la píxide. Una vez que haya terminado de servir a la comunidad puede recuperar su relicario del altar.  Si usted está asistiendo a misa, pero no está sirviendo como MESC en esa misa, puede colocar su píxide sobre la mesa de credenciales antes del inicio de la misa, indicando el número de hostias que vaya a necesitar en su píxide. Después de recibir la comunión, usted puede acercarse al altar y retirar su píxide o al acabar la misa usted puede retirar su píxide del frente del tabernáculo. Usted también puede esperar a que acabe la misa y acercarse al tabernáculo con su píxide vacía y llenarla con el número de hostias consagradas que necesite para su visita.  Si usted está haciendo una visita en alguna otra ocasión, usted necesitará obtener hostias consagradas del tabernáculo. Las llaves para el tabernáculo están disponibles en la sacristía.  Si usted necesita un relicario, póngase en contacto con el Coordinador del Ministerio de Vida Familiar. Si olvida su relicario, encontrará relicarios "extras" en la sacristía que usted puede pedir prestado para su próxima visita. Por favor devuelva la píxide inmediatamente después de su visita para que así otros ministros puedan úsalo en caso de necesitarlo. Visitas  Durante la visita, siga las pautas de comunión en circunstancias ordinarias o comunión en un hospital o institución del Libro Católico para Visitar a los Enfermos y Confinados. Copias del libro puede obtenerse a través del Coordinador del Ministerio de Vida Familiar.  Si otros están presentes, invítelos a orar con usted. Usted puede dar la comunión a otros católicos.  Si usted tiene hostias no utilizadas después de su visita, consúmalas. Si un recipiente escupe una hostia, colóquela en una servilleta limpia o un paño. Hay dos maneras aprobados de eliminación, puede depositarla en el sacrarium (fregadero especial que está en la sacristía, el cual tiene un drenaje directo a la tierra) lavamos especial que está en la sacristía o enterrarla en el suelo. Si entierra una hostia, utilice agua para disolverla. Nunca deseche una hostia consagrada en un sumidero conectado a un desagüe o sistema séptico.  Usted lleva el señor consigo. Haga su visita tan pronto como le sea posible después de obtener las hostias consagradas. No haga diligencias o viajes innecesarios. Mantenga su relicario en su cuerpo en todo momento. Visitas en el Hospital  San Patricio visita a todos los católicos que se encuentra en el Hospital Cape Fear.  Se le dará un distintivo de la iglesia católica de San Patricio por el Coordinador del Ministerio de Vida Familiar y usted recibirá una credencial con fotografía en el mostrador de información, usted necesitará presentar su licencia de conducir cuando entre en el hospital.  Los nombres de los católicos que han listado su religión al tiempo de admisión están en el censo guardado en la oficina de los capellanes. La lista del censo debe devolverse a la oficina de los capellanes una vez que haya completado sus visitas. 6

Saint Camillus Ministry at Saint Patrick Information & Guidelines  Programas de Hospital y Respiro pueden ser conseguidas de la copiadora de la oficina de la iglesia en el buzón Saint Camillus. Recuerde dejar una tarjeta si el paciente no está en la habitación. Hable de esto con la enfermera.  Si usted visita la UCI (Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos) póngase en contacto con las enfermeras por teléfono antes de ingresar a la UCI. El teléfono está en la entrada de UCI.  El personal del hospital siempre ha sido de gran ayuda y está agradecido de quienes visitan a los enfermos.

Instituciones de Cuidado Extendido, Cuidado Asistido y Residencias de Vida Independiente.  En algunos casos, se han hecho arreglos para que los residentes se reúnan en un área común para un servicio de adoración en grupo.  En otros casos, se realizan visitas en las habitaciones de los residentes.  Cada lugar de cuidado es diferente. Es aconsejable obtener una orientación de alguien familiarizado con el lugar de cuidado así sabe el esquema, los procedimientos, requisitos de seguridad, personal del lugar y residentes.

Visitas a los Confinados  Cuando usted reciba una asignación de confinados en la casa, llame por teléfono al hogar para organizar un día de visita y tiempo adecuado; los domingos son el día preferido para visitar a un feligrés confinado, como no son capaces de asistir a misa los domingos, pero otro día puede funcionar según el miembro confinado y el programa de los visitantes.  Es generalmente una buena idea llamar el día de la visita para confirmar y hacerles saber que usted está en camino.

Boletín Parroquial  A los enfermos y a los confinados les encantaría recibir una copia del boletín de la parroquia para ayudarlos a mantenerse en contacto con la comunidad de San Patricio.  De vez en cuando los estudiantes de San Patricio hacen tarjetas que se pueden dar a los visitados.

Saint Camillus Ministry at Saint Patrick Information & Guidelines Horarios y Substitutos Los horarios de los confinados son creados trimestralmente y son distribuidos por correo electrónico a los ministros de San Camillo, por favor intente obtener un sustituto cuando no pueda cubrir su asignación. Si usted es incapaz de obtener un substituto, contacte al Coordinador del Ministerio de Vida Familiar.

Eventos  San Patricio celebra varias misas cada año con Unción de los Enfermos que son atendidas por los enfermos, ancianos o necesitados de sanación. El Ministerio de San Camillo asiste en estas misas mediante la comunicación con los lugares de ciudado que visitamos. Los ministros Camelianos también ayudan a los asistentes a la misa y participan en la liturgia.  El párroco y el vicario parroquial celebrarán el Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos en las casas de los enfermos y en los lugares de cuidado que visitamos. El Ministerio de San Camillo coordina estas misas con los lugares de cuidado y ayuda en la misa. Sacramento de Reconciliación para los Enfermos Usted está visitando a una persona que puede solicitar una visita de un sacerdote para el Sacramento de la Unción los Enfermos o el Sacramento de la Reconciliación.
