What is in our hearts? All of today’s readings remind us that our works reflect what is in our hearts. Do my words and ac ons reveal a heart that is grateful for — and generous in sharing — the abundance God has poured into my life?

Recognizing the Truth That Is in Our Hearts By Hans Christoffersen © 2019 Liguori Publica ons
Our words and deeds say much about who we are, not only on the surface, but in our hearts. Carelessness in our words and ac ons can indicate a careless, unconcerned heart. A careless heart easily finds faults in others while remaining blind to its own failings. Jesus calls people with such a tudes “hypocrites.” Hypocrisy is a Greek word meaning “play ac ng,” that is, passing oneself off as someone other than who one really is. To be real is to have a heart that recognizes and accepts the truth about oneself. This is a humble, down‐to‐earth heart (humility is from the La n “of the earth”), and close enough to ourselves to see our failings and limita ons. Do we know our own hearts? What fills our hearts: censure, cri cism, judgment—or the goodness and humility that makes us realize we hardly know enough to judge anyone?
na on where, un l then, organ dona on was very unusual. Our Scriptures today tell us that these kinds of words and deeds say a lot about who we are—not on the surface, but in our hearts. If God, who is down‐to‐earth, is our focus, we will see how goodness is the fruit of his humble love: “Therefore, my beloved...be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
A Word from Pope Francis When we go to Mass, perhaps we arrive five minutes early and begin to chat with the person next to us. But this is not the moment for small talk….It is the moment for recollec on within the heart, to prepare ourselves for the encounter with Jesus. Silence is so important! —General audience, November 15, 2017

Central American Migration
Photo by Oscar Leiva/Silverlight for CRS
PUSH FACTORS, CHURCH TEACHING & HOW YOU CAN HELP WHY DO CENTRAL AMERICANS MIGRATE TO THE U.S.? Among other reasons, migrants from Central America come to the U.S. to:
ESCAPE VIOLENCE. In the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, many face an insurmountable level of gang or drug cartel related violence. Honduras is the most dangerous country outside of a war zone. Gang controlled areas make it virtually impossible for youth who live in rival neighborhoods to go to school or travel to work. In these neighborhoods, the police are either complicit or unable to protect residents. Deciding to migrate to a safe country like the U.S. is a life and death matter. PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES. Many families who run their own businesses are subjected to extortion by gangs or drug lords, which often results in forcing them to close shop. Young people who live in neighborhoods under criminal control find it impossible to get jobs because employers will not hire them, fearing potential criminal ties just because of their address. Coffee rust, drought and other natural disasters—like the recent volcanic erruption in Guatemala—also make it difficult to survive or rebuild. Extreme poverty, the impact of climate change and the lack of economic opportunity motivate families to leave in search of the things we all want: peace, safety, an education for our children and an opportunity to flourish.
WHAT DOES THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TEACH ABOUT IMMIGRATION? •Catholic principles of migration •Quotes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church about migration •Quotes from Catholic Church teaching on the rights of immigrants and refugees •Catholic Church teaching on vulnerable migrant populations •USCCB position and policy recommendations on migration •Video: Catholic Teaching on Welcoming Refugees
HOW DOES CRS HELP PEOPLE STAY IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES? CRS’ work in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador addresses the root causes of flight to the U.S. We protect kids against trafficking, keep children in school and help youth stay out of gangs in some of the toughest neighborhoods. Programs like YouthBuild, for example, provide life, job skills and entrepreneurship training to youth who might otherwise be on the streets.

Debe protegerse a quienes buscan refugio y asilo.
