Notas del Párroco

In the Gospel we hear this Sunday, Jesus performs one of his very great miracles, the feeding of thousands of people with what seems to be only a meager amount of food. This miracle or ‘sign’ significantly occurs near the Jewish feast of Passover. In this way, Jesus indicates to his disciples the dual nature of his mission: to both sacrifice himself for the redemption of his people, as well as to feed them with his words and the sacrament of himself. We remember that, on the night before the Hebrew people were led from their captivity in Egypt, the Lord had each family sacrifice a lamb, placing some of the lamb’s blood on their doorsills as a sign. While the Egyptian households were struck with death, the Hebrew households were passed-over. As a result, the Pharaoh at last gave his permission for the Hebrews to leave Egypt. The Hebrew people leave in haste, taking with them their dough which has not had time to rise. This is the origin of our tradition of using unleavened bread in our Eucharist. It should not surprise us that Our Lord’s Last Supper, when the Eucharist was first instituted, took place on the Jewish feast of Passover. Here, just before his arrest, Jesus gathered with his Apostles in an upper room. Altering just slightly the usual Jewish prayers, Jesus raises the bread and names it ‘his body’. Likewise, he raises the cup of wine which he calls ‘his blood’, saying that would be shed for many for the forgiveness of sins. And Jesus commanded that his Apostles perpetuate this sacrificial meal forever as a constant memorial of his saving act, so that people everywhere and at all times might share in the redemption from sin and eternal death which Jesus brought, and also so that they could be built up into one people of God. This is what occurs in Catholic churches everywhere as Mass is celebrated. The altar is at the same time a place of sacrifice and a table from which we are fed and nourished. Our Lord clearly intended for us to be strengthened for our daily tasks by partaking in his Body and Blood. He wants us to grow in our knowledge and love of God so that we can create God’s kingdom here on earth, a kingdom of justice and peace and love. And he also wants us to be fortified on our journey through this life and toward that eternal life of perfect happiness in heaven where we hope to be one day with God and all his saints. When Jesus in today’s Gospel multiplies five loaves of bread and two fish so that more than five thousand can be fed, it becomes for the people a sign that Jesus Christ has come to fulfill us in every way possible. He is our Good Shepherd who looks after our needs, who feeds us and leads us to streams of fresh water. He protects us from harm and seeks us out when we are lost. But most of all, he gives us himself so that our life might be joined to his. Fr. Ulysses

En el Evangelio que escuchamos este domingo, Jesús realiza uno de sus mas grandes milagros, la alimentación de miles de personas con lo que parece ser una pequeña cantidad de alimentos. Este milagro o 'señal' ocurre significativamente cerca de la fiesta judía de la Pascua. De esta manera, Jesús les indica a sus discípulos los dos aspectos de su misión: sacrificarse a sí mismo por la redención de su pueblo, así como alimentarlos con sus palabras y el sacramento de sí mismo. Recordamos que, la noche antes de que los hebreos fueran sacados de su cautiverio en Egipto, el Señor hizo que cada familia sacrificara un cordero, rociando parte de la sangre del cordero en los umbrales de sus puertas como señal. Mientras que los hogares egipcios fueron golpeados con la muerte, los hogares hebreos se quedaron seguros. Como resultado, el Faraón por fin dio su permiso para que los hebreos abandonaran Egipto. Los hebreos partieron apresuradamente, llevando consigo la masa que no tuvo tiempo de levantarse. Este es el origen de nuestra tradición de usar pan sin levadura en nuestra Eucaristía. No debería sorprendernos que la Última Cena de Nuestro Señor, cuando se instituyó por primera vez la Eucaristía, tuviera lugar en la fiesta judía de la Pascua. Justo antes de su arresto, Jesús se reunió con sus Apóstoles en un salón. Cambiando un poco las oraciones judías usuales, Jesús levanta el pan y lo llama "su cuerpo". Del mismo modo, levanta la copa de vino que él llama 'su sangre', diciendo que sería derramada por muchos para el perdón de los pecados. Y Jesús ordenó que sus Apóstoles perpetuaran esta comida de sacrificio para siempre como una conmemoración constante de su acto salvador, para que la gente de todas partes y en todo momento pudiera compartir la redención del pecado y la muerte eterna que trajo Jesús, y también para que pudieran ser construidos en el pueblo de Dios. Esto es lo que ocurre en las iglesias católicas en todas partes del mundo cuando se celebra la misa. El altar es al mismo tiempo un lugar de sacrificio y una mesa desde la cual somos alimentados y nutridos. Nuestro Señor claramente tiene la intención de que seamos fortalecidos para nuestras tareas diarias participando en su Cuerpo y Sangre. Él quiere que crezcamos en nuestro conocimiento y amor de Dios para que podamos crear el reino de Dios aquí en la tierra, un reino de justicia, paz y amor. Y también quiere que seamos fortalecidos en nuestro viaje a través de esta vida y hacia esa vida eterna de perfecta felicidad en el cielo donde esperamos estar un día con Dios y todos sus santos. Cuando Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy multiplica cinco panes y dos peces para que se alimenten más de cinco mil personas, se convierte para la gente en una señal de que Jesucristo ha venido a satisfacernos en toda forma posible. Jesús es nuestro Buen Pastor que cuida nuestras necesidades, nos alimenta y nos conduce a fuentes de agua viva. Él nos protege del daño y nos busca cuando estamos perdidos.
