Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Last Monday we celebrated the Feast of St. Mark, and this week we celebrate the memorial of two others of Jesus; Apostles, St Phil and St. James. It is fitting that we should consider the Twelve Apostles and the most well-known of Jesus’ first disciples for it was they who were responsible for spreading faith in Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. The measure of their success is that today, twenty centuries after the death and resurrection of Jesus, his Church has spread to every corner of the earth. Regarding Philip and James, we know that St. Philip was one of the original twelve Apostles, and one of the first chosen by Jesus. Apparently, he had originally been a disciple of John the Baptist, but was then drawn into Jesus’ close circle. It was Philip who, at the miraculous feeding of 5,000 people, pointed out to Jesus that they only had a small amount of bread, insufficient to feed such a crowd. Philip is also listed as being among those who were in the upper room at the time the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost. In the Gospel chosen for this Feast, the Apostles are seated with Jesus at the Last Supper. The traitor, Judas Iscariot has just left the room to inform the authorities of Jesus’ whereabouts. Philip tenderly says to Jesus, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus responds that “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” It is from such remarks that we understand that Jesus is indeed God himself, one in being or substance with God the Father, and with the Holy Spirit, that he is in fact the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. The Apostle James whom we’re also honoring today is often called James the Minor to distinguish him from the other Apostle, also known as James, who was a cousin of Jesus. “Minor” in this case simply means he was younger, not less important, than the other St. James. It was this St. James whose mother, also named Mary was present with St. John and Jesus’ mother, Mary, at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday when Jesus died. This would suggest the intimacy and familiarity that James must have shared with our Lord. These two feasts of the Apostles, coming so close to one another, remind us in this Easter Season of the importance of what we call ‘Apostolic Succession’. In other words, what Jesus taught he passed on to his Apostles in a special way, and they in turned passed on this eternal “deposit of faith” to others. St. Paul says in the first reading for this feast: “”I handed on to you . . . what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day; that he appeared to Peter . . . , to James, then to all the Apostles.” Through this Gospel given to the Apostles, we too are being saved, if only we believe as they did and allow ourselves to be transformed by the Truth. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises

Jubilee Year of Mercy May 1, 2016 Sixth Sunday of Easter

In formal documents, presentations, and homilies outlining the purpose of this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis explains that compassion and understanding for those in difficult situations is not only our individual responsibility, but something the whole Church officially needs to manifest. Today’s Acts of the Apostles reading presents a moving example of the early church doing precisely that. Prayerful openness to the Holy Spirit assures the assembly that they have not acted alone in discerning the correct resolution: “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us.” And they have chosen the compassionate response: “not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities” (Acts 15:28). Yet how daringly creative—the Jewish majority sets aside lifelong rituals that establish spiritual identity and express covenant fidelity. How radically trustful—the church affirms universally valid principles while respecting uniquely local and personal situations. Exactly the grace Pope Francis prays this Jubilee Year will renew in today’s Church!
