Notas del Párroco

Today we celebrate the last Sunday of Ordinary Time. Starting next Sunday, we enter into a new liturgical year, that season we call Advent during which recall the coming into the world of Jesus our Savior as a fragile infant some two thousand years ago. We might wonder, considering the humbleness of Jesus’ beginnings, why the Church would name this Sunday ‘The Solemnity of Christ the King.’ For us, the word ‘king’ generally signifies a person of vast wealth, of absolute power over others, and of unapproachable pomp and majesty. The oppressed Jews of Jesus’ time wanted their Messiah to be just such a king, one who could command armies and destroy their enemies. And Pontius Pilate meant nothing but irony when he ordered that a plaque be nailed over Jesus’ head with the inscription, “King of the Jews.” Indeed, who wanted a King whose Kingdom was not of this world? Who wanted a king who demanded that we love even our enemies? And who wanted a king whose throne was reached by the utter humility of dying on a cross? Certainly not those who had put all their hopes in Jesus as a political leader, all those (including some of his closest disciples) who expected that he would be at last be recognized, carried in triumph through the streets of Jerusalem and placed on the throne of Israel. But the uncomfortable truth, the contradiction of earthly values that Jesus Christ came to reveal to us was that the way to God’s holy Kingdom would be through self-sacrifice, through giving of oneself for the sake of others, through unselfish love, and finally (and especially) through forgiveness. All of Jesus’ great deeds, his cures, his many miracles, and his moral teachings are summed up in that last hour of his life. As the cruel soldiers stripped him naked and brutally nailed his hands and feet to the wood, Jesus cried out, “Father, forgive them; they know not what they do.” And then, as he hung bleeding to death on the cross, looking down in sorrow at his mother and his friends, he still had to endure the abuse of the jeering crowd. Even one of the thieves who had been crucified next to Jesus called out in scorn, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But then, in the Gospel we hear today, St. Luke reports that the other thief silenced him with the words, “the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing.” And turning toward Jesus he humbly begs, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” To this extraordinary act of faith, to this sincere demonstration of repentance on the part of the thief, Jesus replies, “This day you will be with me in Paradise.” There can be no more poignant summing up of Jesus’ purpose here on earth than that final act of forgiveness. Hoy celebramos el último Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Comenzando el próximo domingo, entraremos en un nuevo año litúrgico, este tiempo que llamamos Adviento, es durante el cual recordamos la venida al mundo de Jesús, nuestro Salvador, como un frágil infante hace unos dos mil años. Podríamos preguntarnos, considerado la humildad de Jesús en sus principios, por qué la Iglesia nombraría este domingo ‘La Solemnidad de Cristo el Rey’. Para nosotros, la palabra ‘Rey’ generalmente significa una persona de inmensa riqueza, de poder absoluto sobre otros, y de pompa inaccesible y majestad. Los judíos oprimidos del tiempo de Jesús querían que su Mesías fuera semejante a un rey, uno que podría ordenar a ejércitos y podría destruir a sus enemigos. Y Poncio Pilatos quiso ser nada más irónico, cuándo pidió que una placa fuera clavada por encima de la cabeza de Jesús con la inscripción, "Rey de los Judíos". De hecho, ¿quién querría a un Rey cuyo Reino no era de este mundo? ¿Quién querría a un rey que exigía que amaramos incluso a nuestros enemigos? ¿Y quién querría a un rey cuyo trono seria alcanzado por la humildad absoluta de morir en una cruz? Ciertamente no aquéllos que habían puesto todas sus esperanzas en Jesús como un líder político, todos aquéllos (incluyendo algunos de sus discípulos más íntimos) quienes esperaban que él fuera reconocido al final, llevado victoriosamente a través de las calles de Jerusalén y puesto en el trono de Israel. Pero la incómoda verdad, la contradicción de valores terrenales que Jesucristo vino a revelarnos fue que el camino al santo Reino de Dios es a través del sacrificio, de darse a sí mismo por causa de otros, a través del amor altruista, y finalmente (y sobre todo) a través del perdón. Todos los grandes hechos de Jesús, sus curas, sus muchos milagros, y sus enseñanzas morales se resumen en esa última hora de su vida. Cuando los soldados crueles lo dejaron desnudo y brutalmente clavaron sus manos y pies al madero, Jesús clamó, "Padre, perdónalos; ellos no saben lo que hacen". Y luego, cuando él colgado sangrando hasta la muerte en la cruz y mirando hacia abajo con dolor a su madre y sus amigos, él todavía tenía que soportar el abuso de la muchedumbre burlándose. Incluso uno de los ladrones que habían sido crucificados al lado de Jesús convocó con desprecio, ¿"No eres el Cristo? Sálvate a ti y a nosotros"! A este acto extraordinario de fe, a este arrepentimiento sincero por parte del ladrón, Jesús contesta, "Este día estarás conmigo en el Paraíso". Jackets Needed Jackets are needed for the homeless men and women who come to the Fair Oaks Community Center in RWC. For the next 2 weeks, the Mt. Carmel Conference of SVdP will assist by collecting your donated jackets. A barrel will be at the entrance of the church to receive your donated jackets, especially XL, XXL and XXXL. This is used to cover the expenses of our Music Ministry, including salaries, microphones and other equipment and the music books. It also help us to pay for such liturgical needs as Altar Bread and Wine, altar server vestment, candles and Church decor.
