Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

A few years ago I became one of those thousands of tourists who annually visit the beautiful Italian hill town of Assisi. The train let us off in the station below, and then my companion and I began the long uphill trek toward the town itself. You might think that in the 21st century with all our modern distractions and technology the appeal of such a place as Assisi would have lessened. But instead, the medieval charm of the place immediately takes hold of your heart, and even with the hordes of tourists and souvenir shops, the spirituality of Assisi is real and palpable. As we approach the feast of St. Francis of Assisi this October 4th, it is good to reflect upon the possible reasons for the continuing popularity of this holy man who, after all, died nearly 800 years ago. The general outline of his life is well-known. He was born to a wealthy cloth merchant in 1182. As a young man, he exhibited all the worst traits of his class: a taste for fancy clothes, for drink, for fighting and for loose-living. After being captured in one of the many battles between neighboring citystates and then falling seriously ill, Francis experienced a very profound conversion. He was drawn increasingly to a life of prayer, penance and charity. He began to spend time among social outcasts and the poor. As one can imagine, his parents were very disturbed by Francis’ behavior. One day while praying in a ruined chapel, the Chapel of San Damiano, Francis claimed to have heard God say to him, “Go and repair my house which you see is falling down.” He sold some valuable cloth from his father’s store to raise money for the renovations. His father, discovering this, became enraged and threatened to disown Francis. In a dramatic public scene, Francis returned the money, completely renounced his inheritance and stripped naked before the Bishop of Assisi. He eventually founded the Order of Friars Minor dedicated to a strict rule of poverty and to working among the poor. Despite the severity of the order, Francis gained many followers, including a young woman, Clare, from another well-off local family. She founded a parallel community for women now known as the Poor Clares. By the time of Francis’ death when he was only forty-five, there were over 3,000 Franciscans. There is, of course, much more to say about St. Francis, but nothing more remarkable than the fact that he remains, even among nonbelievers, an example of holiness, of love for all God’s creation, especially for animals, a model of how to live simply in order to enjoy the awesome gift of pure being, and a proof of the pleasure our existence can give us when we live for God alone. This year, on his feast, let us pray in a special way for the growth of our own Archdiocese of San Francisco which, since its founding, has been especially dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. And let us pray that the Christ-like values which St. Francis embodied may be imitated by all of us who yearn for the harmony and love which that holy man constantly preached. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises

Water for Tanzania! Help our brothers and sisters in Kiraeni to build a cistern to hold drinking water. The village of 5,000 continues to suffer from severe drought and families in the village must travel by foot several miles each day to collect drinking water in large buckets. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help them build a cistern to hold 150,000 gallons of rainwater collected from the roof of the church. To date the school and parish community have raised $4,800 and we hope to collect a total of $20,000 by January so that we can hand deliver the funds. Please make checks payable to Mount Carmel Church and put Sister Parish in the memo line. Want more information? Join us for our meeting Oct. 3 at 7pm in the Parish Center. Contact Lucinda Dei Rossi at 366-9604 with any questions.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

October 2, 2016 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Jubilee of Marian Devotion begins next Saturday “How long, O L ?” (Habakkuk 1:2). With Habakkuk’s question echoing across twenty-six hundred years, Respect Life Sunday finds all life claiming sanctuary in our hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee, imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth, Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si’, bears scars of disrespect for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened, as in Habakkuk’s day, with ruin and misery, “destruction and violence, . . . strife and clamorous discord” (see 1:3). Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we “unprofitable servants” cry with the apostles, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:10, 5). But Jesus’ reply might be paraphrased, “Not quantity— quality.” Next weekend marks the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy’s special devotion to Mary, whose willingness to shelter Jesus in her womb and stand at the foot of his cross bears witness to the qualities that Jesus expects our faith to manifest: the willingness to trust, to risk, and to dare to speak up for life. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
