Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

On Tuesday of this week we’ll celebrate the memorial of a recently canonized saint. Although he has been on the Church calendar for only six years, Damien de Veuster or St. Damien of Moloka’i has long been known to people all over the world. Indeed, along with of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, St. Damien is recognized as one of those rare souls whose identification with the suffering of others can only be compared to that of Christ himself. St. Damien was born in Belgium, and as a young man he followed his brother into a missionary order called the Congregation of the Sacred Heart. Soon after being accepted he volunteered to go to the Hawaiian Islands where he was ordained into the priesthood. He worked tirelessly for ten years on the main island helping to build hospitals, schools and parishes. While visiting some of his parishioners in a remote area, he became acquainted with the devastating disease of leprosy. Concerned about a health crisis that had reached epidemic proportions, the Hawaiian government made the decision to round up and then isolate people diagnosed with leprosy. This was an intensely tragic episode in the history of the islands. Sufferers from leprosy, including small children, were forcibly separated from their families and then boarded onto ships bound for the nearly inaccessible island of Moloka’i. Most were psychologically traumatized by this experience; others died during the transfer. Damien, hearing of this sad situation, got permission from his superior to go and minister to the people on Moloka’i. When he arrived, he found terrible living conditions, nonexistent sanitation, and little in the way of medical treatment for the sufferers. He set to work at once and despite many obstacles managed to organize health care and to provide for the spiritual needs of his new congregation. People who had fallen into complete despair were given back their human dignity; the younger lepers were taught trades and skills they could use to make a living, and with the help of some religious sisters, a sense of normalcy was finally brought to the island. A real community began to form in the previously desolate colony. Eventually, word of Father Damien’s mission on Moloka’i began to circulate around the world. The famous writer, Robert Lewis Stevenson, visited from Europe and wrote about what he witnessed. The Queen of Hawaii also came to see for herself what this foreign priest was doing for her people. Damien’s life was one of total and complete dedication to Christ in the guise of these outcast lepers. Eventually, Damien himself became infected with the disease. As he lay dying he said, “I make myself a leper with the lepers, to gain all for Jesus Christ.” Damien of Moloka’i was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in the year 2009. He remains for all of us a model of self sacrifice and how unconditional love of others can be put into action. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises

Jubilee Year of Mercy

May 8, 2016 The Ascension of the Lord As the liturgical year—and this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy—unfold, we reflect on what Jesus’ ascension meant for the first disciples and means now for us. Stay in Jerusalem, Jesus had instructed, awaiting “the promise of the Father. In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:4–5, 8). Despite Jesus’ absence, they wait “with great joy . . . continually in the temple praising God” (Luke 24:52–53). But as we join them, waiting and worshiping, the enduring challenge—theirs and ours—is delivered by “two men in white” (Acts 1:10). In every age, disciples must stop looking at the sky, head down the mountain, and go back into the world, “commissioned,” says Pope Francis, “to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel,” inviting everyone to find “in our parishes, communities, associations and movements . . . wherever there are Christians . . . an oasis of mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
