For the first time on his history, Paraguay will be the host of a World Congress of Medicine, so it will be a challenge to catch up to other global events held in the region or outside. Our project is to discuss with all of you the most current and specific issues of Perinatology and the different aspects related to the overall health of the woman and her newborn. We look forward to leading experts and leaders' opinion to share with you the recent advances in the field. Welcome to the 9th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine in Developing Countries Dear friends from all over the world, We have been working hard during these last years, in order to present to all of you a Scientific Program reflecting the importance of Perinatal Medicine for the developing countries. We considered all the suggestions that you forwarded, because each one of you matters. We also had in mind the needs of young professionals in their different social, cultural and economic settings, because everyone committed to help mothers and infants deserves respect and gratitude. And last, but surely in the core of our concerns, we looked forward to the needs and wants of so many women and newborns in the world that still today suffer from neglect. We are quite aware that Perinatal Medicine makes enormous progresses, year after year , thanks to the conjunction of many disciplines , Obstetrics, Neonatology, Genetics, Psychology, Sociology, Ultrasound., Surgery,... but what really matters is people. Our mothers are the present, they need us today our newborns are the future, and we must be there to assist them. The WAPM has honored Paraguay entrusting the organization of the 9º World Congress of Perinatal Medicine of the developing Countries, in return wants to honor this distinction. Dear Colleagues, It gives me a great pleasure to welcome you at the 9th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine in Developing Countries (WCPMDC) which has been organized by the World Association of Perinatal Medicine every two (even) years in order to address the most important issues of perinatal medicine in developing countries. Although we organize the World Congresses of Perinatal Medicine (WCPM) every two (odd) years (the last 12th WCPM has been held in Madrid, Spain), we believe that problems of perinatal medicine in developing countries deserve special attention and special congress. Congress is the place where we can learn about the history, analyze the present and look into the future of perinatal medicine. Medicine is developing very rapidly and there is a strong tendency of specialization and subspecialization, which has been often connected with the loss of a more integrated, individual and humane approach toward the health problems of the patients. There is a strong tendency towards a multidisciplinary approach within many fields of medicine nowadays, and such an approach has been introduced by the concept of perinatal medicine many decades ago. This concept has been successfully practiced for many years where obstetricians, maternal and fetal specialists, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, ultrasonographers and many others work together for the benefit of the mothers and children. Unfortunately, in many countries of the world, perinatal societies do not exist; and the separation of perinatal medicine into fetomaternal and neonatal medicine is not as beneficial as it could if these two disciplines were launched together. We have to preserve the concept of perinatal medicine in order to improve perinatal health of pregnant women, their fetuses and newborn children, and I believe that our main task now and in the nearest future is to permanently improve the health of our patients either prenatally or postnatally. I am sure that the 9th WCPMDC will be a good opportunity to exchange opinions and to make contribution to the improvement of maternal, fetal and neonatal health. I wish to all of you successful and fruitful work for the benefit of our patients, to make this world better place for living for the next generations to come. I hope you as individuals will launch our organization and support our efforts to make small but important improvements in the field of perinatal medicine in developing countries. Tours Asunción – Panoramic City Tour

Departure from the hotel for a complete tour of the city of Asuncion, a city with a picturesque combination of modern and colonial architecture, including downtown and residential areas, such as the House of Independence, the Cathedral, the Government Palace, the National Heroes Mausoleum, where the remains of the greatest heroes of our history are resting, the Avenida Mariscal Lopez, also known as the Avenue of the Embassies, ending at the popular handicraft market, La Recova.

Ypacaraí Lake and Handicraft Market

This tour includes a visit to the artisanal town of Luque, with its rustic factories harps and guitars, and jewelry in gold and silver made in a filigree carving. Then we continue to visit the artisan town of Aregua, old summer town that maintains its early 20th Century flavor. Pottery and artisanal centers exhibit their works throughout the year Afterwards we continue to San Bernardino, located on the shores of Ypacarai lake, a current summer resort. Later we will visit the city of Itauguá, home of the famous Ñandutí (spider's web in Guarani language) handmade lace whose design is based on the web of spiders. Visitors can buy handicrafts such as tablecloths, tablemats, hammocks, bedcovers etc. Return to Asunción.

Departure from your hotel to the bus station to board a bus to the city of Ciudad del Este. Arrival, time for breakfast (breakfast not included) and continue to visit Itaipú Dam (Paraguayan side). After this visit, we will move to the city of Foz de Iguassu, time for lunch (lunch not included) and after that, visit the Iguassu Falls, Brazilian side (National Park entrance fee not included), one of the new seven wonders of the world, with a wonderful panoramic view of the majestic waterfalls. After the tour, departure on 06:30 PM bus to return to Asunción. Arrival, and transfer to the hotel.
