Una nueva constelación de las artes se despliega en Salamanca para transformarla durante dieciséis días en capital cultural de Castilla y León, huella tangible de aquella célebre capitalidad europea de 2002. Y ello en un año, además, especialmente significativo para el mundo de la astronomía, que tendrá claro reflejo en este Festival cuyo compromiso se renueva con las propuestas escénicas y acciones artísticas más vanguardistas del panorama mundial. Pero también es un tiempo para reflexionar ante las dificultades que sobrevuelan múltiples ámbitos, en medio de una crisis económica internacional. Nuevos acentos para un Festival impregnado de intimidad y cercanía con el potencial cultural de esta tierra, como podremos contemplar a lo largo de las jornadas. Salamanca deviene un año más en referente artístico. Al ineludible magnetismo de su patrimonio histórico y cultural se unen, entre el 29 de mayo y el 13 de junio, buena parte del talento creativo de Europa y del mundo, junto al propio latido de la ciudad. Es decir, se sitúa en el centro de una cartografía local y global que tiene en las artes su conexión principal. Una mirada a los fenómenos ambientales, a los asociados a la globalización, o a los recientes flujos migratorios y, ahora también, a las transformaciones económicas, entraña nuevos retos y necesidades a las que la cultura y las artes no pueden sustraerse. Todo ello exige configurar novedosas fórmulas de presentación de los contenidos artísticos y culturales, otros formatos que generen diferentes vías de acercamiento, convivencia y participación. Redes que nos aproximen a nuevos espacios públicos. Y uno de esos retos actuales es hacer llegar esas propuestas a todas las capas sociales y crear un diálogo activo entre cultura y públicos de todas las edades, compartir con colectivos heterogéneos la experiencia de las artes y la cultura como motor de desarrollo. En esta ocasión, la paleta cromática del Festival se tiñe de rosa, para sorprender y animar desde la mirada cómplice hasta la piel de la piedra. Mirada en reposo y caleidoscópica, quietud y ruptura, tal como expresa con rotundidad la imagen del cartel del Festival, para vivirla y habitar la ciudad y sus entrañas. Manteniendo nuestra apuesta por la novedad, el FIACyL inaugura una nueva figura en su programación general, la de artista invitado, que tiene en la persona de Calixto Bieito a una de las personalidades de la escena contemporánea más celebrada y reclamada internacionalmente. Junto a la Compañía del Teatre Romea, nos acerca, en absoluta primicia, su Ensayo abierto de Don Carlos, de Schiller, cuyo estreno mundial tendrá lugar dos semanas más tarde en Alemania. A esta programación de Sala se unirán doce grandes creaciones llegadas desde Estados Unidos, Australia, o Argentina, pasando por la Europa más cercana. Y en esa sintonía con la escena de vanguardia dos compañías de Castilla y León protagonizarán dos estrenos absolutos: Fabularia, con “El triciclo” de Arrabal, y Alicia Soto-Hojarasca/Post Theater, con “Super GravityZero Gravity”. Siguiendo la estela del anterior, el 5º Festival apuesta, en su andadura de 2009, por promover el beatbox y colabora de nuevo con la organización internacional para reforzar esta disciplina artística emergente, en el 2º Campeonato Nacional. Desde la ciencia del firmamento bajaremos a transitar por los caminos conectados a otro de los patrimonios vivos de la ciudad, los barrios y sus múltiples variedades, en las artes de calle. Redescubriremos nuevas formas de habitar otros espacios, como las “Conchas silenciosas”, de poesía y música contemporánea. Música electrónica, canción de autor, jazz, indie pop, hip hop … Encuentros en la noche, de puente a puente y de la Plaza a la Rúa Mayor… Cambios de fisonomía para descubrir “La vie en rose”. Alternativas destacables, programas interdisciplinares, proponer arte y parte de lo que nos rodea y con quien nos rodea. Seguimos construyendo pasarelas, enlaces hacia voces y personas con perspectivas diferentes. Conexiones y modos de convivir con los cuales, a través de esta red de actos y presencias, mantenemos a flote la imaginación y la creatividad, sin perder la emoción.

A new constellation of the arts unfolds in Salamanca to be transformed during sixteen days in the cultural capital of Castile and Leon, a tangible mark from that celebrated status as a European capital in 2002. This is during a year that is especially significant for the world of astronomy, which will have a clear reflection in this Festival as the commitment is renewed with the most vanguard staging proposals and artistic actions on the world scene. this is also a time to reflect on the difficulties that affect Get connected! Networks which will bring us closer to new public spaces. One of these current challenges is to be able to make those proposals reach all of the social levels and to create an active dialogue between culture and the general public of all ages, to share the experience of the arts and culture with heterogeneous groups as a means of development. This time, the Festival’s chromatic palette is pink, to surprise and encourage everyone, from the most complicit look to the skin of the stone. A calm and kaleidoscopic look, quietude and rupture just as expressed with rotundity in the image of the Festival’s poster, to live and inhabit the city and its entrails. Maintaining our commitment to innovation, FIACyL inaugurates a new figure in the general program, the special guest artist, which in Calixto Bieito’s case, is one of the most celebrated and internationally demanded personalities on the contemporary scene. Together with the Theatrical Company Romea, we will be brought closer, in the exclusive debut with Ensayo abierto by Don Carlos, of Schiller, while the worldwide premiere will take place two weeks later in Germany. In the programming of Sala (Hall), twelve great creations coming from the United States, Australia, Argentina and Europe will be added. To that tune, on the vanguard scene two companies from Castile and Leon will be the protagonists in two debuts: Fabularia, with “The Tricycle” by Arrabal, and Alicia Soto-Hojarasca/Post Theater, with “Super Gravity-Zero Gravity”. As in the past editions, the 5th Festival commits during the 2009 edition, to promote beatbox and to collaborate once again with the international organization to reinforce this emerging artistic discipline in the 2nd National Championships. From the firmament of science, we will venture down to walk on the paths all interconnected, of the live patrimonies of the city, the districts and the numerous varieties in the street art. We will rediscover new ways to inhabit other spaces, like in “Conchas silenciosas”, of poetry and contemporary music. Electronic music, singer-songwriters, jazz, indie pop, hip hop… We will find in the night, from bridge to bridge and from the Plaza to the Rúa Mayor… Physiognomy changes to discover “La vie en rose”. Outstanding alternatives, interdisciplinary programs, to present art and to take part in our surroundings and with those who surrounded us. We continue to build walkways, links towards voices and people with different perspectives. Connections and ways of coexisting with which, through this network of actions, we will keep imagination and creativity afloat without losing the emotion.

Desde su Miranda de Ebro natal Calixto Bieto se traslada con su familia a Cataluña a los 15 años. Estudia Filología Hispánica e Historia del Arte en la Universidad de Barcelona, Interpretación en la Escola d´Art Dramatic de Tarragona y Dirección de Escena en el Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona. A partir de ahí continúa su formación y perfeccionamiento con Judy Dench, Brian Cox y Bruce Myers, y maestros como Grotowsky, Peter Brook, Giorgo Strehler, Ingmar Bergman y Andrej Wajda. Su andadura en el mundo del teatro profesional la emprende con 20 años. En 1992 viaja a París, al Teatre Odéon, con Lluis Pascual. A partir de 1995 Focus comienza a producir sus espectáculos teatrales. Lleva La verbena de la Paloma (1996) al Festival de Edimburgo. Aquella producción, junto a La vida es sueño (1999), que presenta en inglés con la Compañía del Royal Lyceum Theatre en Edimburgo y en Nueva York, inician la imparable proyección internacional de su carrera.Desde 1999 es Director Artístico del Teatre Romea de Barcelona, con cuya Compañía, Teatre Romea, ha estrenado en el Reino Unido, Francia, Alemania, Noruega, Italia, Finlandia y México. En la actualidad alterna la impartición de cursos internacionales de dirección e interpretación con la dirección de escena de ópera, teatro y zarzuela en los escenarios más prestigiosos del mundo.

From his birthplace in Miranda de Ebro, Calixto Bieto, at the age of 15, moved with his family to Catalonia. He studied Spanish Studies and Art History in the University of Barcelona, Performing arts at the Escola d´Art Dramatic of Tarragona and Stage Direction in the Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona. From there he continued his education and development with Judy Dench, Brian Cox and Bruce Myers and maestros like Grotowsky, Peter Brook, Giorgo Strehler, Ingmar Bergman and Andrej Wajda. His professional career in theater began at the age of 20. In 1992 he traveled to Paris to the Odeon Theater with Lluis Pascual. In 1995, Focus began to produce his theatrical shows. He took La verbena de la Paloma (1996) to the Edinburgh Festival. That production, together with La vida es sueño (1999), presented in English with the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company in Edimburgh and in New York, marks a turning point in his unstoppable career. Since 1999, he has been the Artistic Director of the Teatre Romea of Barcelona whose Company, Teatre Romea, has performed in Great Britain, France, Germany, Norway, Italy, Finland and Mexico. Currently, he takes turns between teaching international courses on direction and performing arts and directing opera, theater and zarzuela on the most prestigious stages in the world.

Calixto Bieito Por más que me haya convertido en un ciudadano europeo que un día se acuesta en Berlín y se despierta en Basilea o en Oslo, mis raíces siguen estando claras y cada vez que piso tierra castellano y leonesa regreso de alguna forma a mis primeros recuerdos. Me siento feliz de que se me requiera nuevamente desde Salamanca, porque además uno no es siempre “profeta en su tierra”.

No matter how much of a European citizen I have become, where one day I go to bed in Berlin and wake up in Oslo, my roots will continue to be clear and each time I touch down in Castile and Leon, I go back in one way or another to my earliest memories. I feel happy to be called back, once again to Salamanca, because one isn’t always “a prophet in his own land”.

El Festival Internacional de las Artes de Castilla y León ha vuelto a contar conmigo, después de haber apostado ya en tres ediciones anteriores por mi trabajo con la Compañía Teatre Romea. En esta ocasión me han ofrecido además la posibilidad de colaborar más estrechamente con la dirección del festival y para agradecer ese gesto he querido brindar por primera vez al público del festival algo nuevo y diferente, la posibilidad de asistir a un ensayo abierto de nuestro próximo espectáculo, Don Carlos de Schiller, que se estrenará pocos días después en Alemania abriendo las prestigiosas Jornadas Schiller que organiza el Teatro Nacional de Mannheim, para que puedan vivir en directo conmigo y la Compañía Teatre Romea una de las fases de la creación de un espectáculo que más nos apasionan a los que nos dedicamos a esto.

The International Arts Festival of Castile and Leon has once again included me, after having confided in my work with the Teatre Romea Company during the past three editions. This time, I have also been offered the chance to directly collaborate with the Organization of the festival and to acknowledge this gesture I would like to offer something new and different, for the first time, to the general public at the festival. This will be the possibility to attend an open rehearsal of our up-coming performance, Don Carlos of Schiller, which will premiere in Germany a few days afterwards, as the opening to the prestigious Schiller Conferences that the National Theater of Mannheim organizes. In this way, the audience will be able to experience live, with me and the Teatre Romea Company, one of the creative phases of a performance that most excites those of us who are in this field.

Me hace feliz colaborar nuevamente con el Festival Internacional de las Artes de Castilla y León porque reúne varios ingredientes con los que me identifico. Creo que a los responsables del Festival les mueve lo mismo que a mí: la pasión por las artes, no sólo las escénicas, sino por la creación contemporánea en cualquiera de sus manifestaciones, especialmente las más innovadoras y arriesgadas, procedentes de todas partes del mundo y en todos los idiomas. La programación del Festival reúne en esta edición espectaculares propuestas multimedia, propuestas singulares en las que confluyen diferentes expresiones artísticas como el teatro, la danza, el cine y la música. Una oportunidad única para conocer lo que están haciendo ahora mismo artistas de Australia, de Estados Unidos, de Argentina, de Italia, de Bélgica, de Alemania, de Japón, de Austria, de Francia... y por supuesto también de España. Me sumo también al homenaje a Fernando Arrabal*, transgresor, polémico, siempre lúcido. El Festival Internacional de las Artes de Castilla y León ha preparado una enorme fiesta de la creación contemporánea internacional. Como dice el título del espectáculo que presenta el gran coreógrafo belga Jan Fabre, una magnífica “orgía de la tolerancia” a su alcance desde una de las ciudades más bellas y con un enorme patrimonio histórico. Prepárense para disfrutar, por unos días Salamanca no está tan lejos de Berlín, de Nueva York o de Tokio.

I feel happy to collaborate once again with the International Arts Festival of Castile and Leon because it brings together various ingredients that I identify with. I think that those in charge of the festival are moved by the same thing I am: passion for the arts, not only for scenic arts, but for any contemporary creation in any form, especially the most innovative and spectacular multimedia proposals, unique proposals where different artistic expressions come together like theater, dance, cinema and music. A unique opportunity to get to know what artists from Australia, the United States, Argentina, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Austria, France, and of course, Spain are doing. I also include myself in the tribute to Fernando Arrabal*, transgressor, polemic, always magnificent. The International Arts Festival of Castile and Leon has prepared an enormous party for international contemporary creation. As the title of the performance by the great Belgium choreographer, Jan Fabre, states, a magnificent “orgy of tolerance” within reach from one of the most beautiful cities with a incredibly important historic patrimony. Por segunda vez el Festival Internacional de las Artes recibe a la compañía estadounidense The Builders Association y a su directora Marianne Weems para estrenar en España su última creación, “Continuous City”. Un espectacular escenario multimedia que retrata un paisaje urbano nacido de la unión de fragmentos de diferentes vidas y localizaciones, virtuales y reales, entre ellas la propia ciudad de Salamanca y sus habitantes. La desaparición de un hombre de negocios protagoniza esta excelente composición surgida de la interacción entre la propia existencia de sus personajes y los lugares que concurren tanto en su realidad como en su propia imaginación. Tecnología al uso de la expresión de pasiones, anhelos y necesidades que dirigen el destino de unos personajes, que en la distancia y sin ser conscientes, viven inmersos en un universo sin definir. “Presentada con una inteligente puesta en escena y un impresionante conjunto de pantallas multimedia, esta producción captó con éxito el interés de los espectadores y encendió el pensamiento y la discusión…” (News Gazette Review – Patricia Stiller)

For the second time, the International Arts Festival welcomes the American company, The Builders Association, with director Marianne Weems, for the Spanish debut of their latest creation, “Continuous City”. A spectacular multimedia stage which portrays an urban landscape born from the union of the fragments of different lives and locations, virtual and real, among which include the actual city of Salamanca and its inhabitants. The disappearance of a businessman takes the leading role of this excellent composition which comes out of the interaction of the actual existence of its characters and the places which concur both in reality as well in imagination. Technology in the expression of passions, desires and needs that conduct the destiny of some of the characters, who, from afar and without realizing it, live immersed in an undefined universe. “Presented with clever staging and an impressive array of media screen, this production successfully engaged viewers and ignited thought and conversation…” . Motus invita a los espectadores a ordenar la evolución de una vida: Deconstrucción-Construcción-Deconstrucción? Incomprensión, duda, miedos y expectativas plasmados en imágenes grabadas por la compañía en tres ciudades, creando un complejo híbrido de baile desacompasado y música estridente, provocado por la relación con el asfalto de las calles como reflejo de la coexistencia del ser humano con el ser humano. “Un espectáculo visualmente seductor, repleto de referencias al arte contemporáneo” (La Repubblica)

A subjective immersion into the psyche of the adolescent world as a reflection from maturity. This is not a nostalgic look at the years of youth, but a mirror reflecting the reasons for the fundamental difficulties of this age. Motus invites the audience to put the evolution of a life in order: Deconstruction-Construction-Deconstruction? Incomprehension, doubt, fear and expectations captured in images recorded by the company in three cities, creating a complex hybrid of disproportionate dance and shrill music, provoked by the connection with the asphalt of the streets as a reflection of the coexistence of the human being with the human being. “A visually seductive show, full of references to contemporary art”.

Su nueva producción es un bosquejo con múltiples capas superpuestas acerca de nuestra mediatizada sociedad. Una absurda referencia al mundo de los excesos. Un pinchazo al superpoderoso globo de la normalidad, con ecos de humor tortuoso al más puro estilo de Monty Python, cuyas hilarantes representaciones arrojan sal sobre nuestras heridas. With dancers, musicians and actors on the stage, the renowned Belgian choreographer, Jan Fabre, portrays the panorama of tolerance as a caricature and projects his invective on our young 21st century, venting his incomprehension in a very personal way. Yo en el futuro

De la mano del distinguido y galardonado cineasta y director teatral argentino Federico León, llega por primera vez a España su espectáculo “Yo en el futuro”, la perfecta fusión de dos expresiones, cine y teatro, la reinvención de un lenguaje artístico. Dentro de una sala de cine tradicional, un escenario repleto de vivencias que coexisten en diferentes espacios temporales, seis actrices y tres actores que inducen al espectador a la reflexión más profunda sobre el paso del tiempo, la perdurabilidad de las experiencias y su influencia en los diferentes ciclos vitales. Tres niños que intentan dejar constancia de su paso por esta vida grabando unas imágenes experimentales que atravesarán las generaciones ulteriores para intentar modificar tanto el presente como el pasado. Under the guidance of the distinguished and award winning film and theatre director, the Argentinean Federico León’s show “Me in the future” is coming to Spain for the first time. It is the perfect fusion of two artistic expressions, cinema and theatre, the reinvention of an artistic language. Housed within a traditional cinema, the stage is full of experiences that coexist in different temporary spaces. Six actresses and three actors lead the audience through the most profound reflection on the passage of time, the everlasting nature of the experiences and their influence on different life cycles. Three children try to leave their mark on their passage through this life by recording some experimental images which will pass through to subsequent generations to try to modify both the past and present.

Created for the city of Linz, European Capital of Culture 2009, and for the KunstenFestivalDesArts, “An anthology of Optimism”, a project for the early 21st century, is conceived after the first meeting of the directors Jakob Wren and Pieter de Buysser. The search for a “critical optimism” began with a letter, which was sent out to writers, artists, politicians, etc., using afterwards the contributions they received as a framework for this performance. A journey through the present, the here and now, pessimism versus optimism, Jakob versus Pieter, they will try to make us question what optimism really means nowadays.

The young Italian company Muta Imago brings to life the diary of Lev Zasetsky, a Russian soldier who is a patient of the renowned doctor in neuropsychiatry, Alexander Luira. With a reduced futuristic stage design which recalls the aesthetic of the videogames, the actors communicate through the thoughts of Lev, a man deprived of his memories due to a bullet wound in the head, who dedicates his life to reconstructing, piece by piece, an identity, a past, and a present and the constituent features of the human condition. EMIO GRECO PC [purgatorio] POPOPERA En “[purgatorio] POPOPERA”, continuación al viaje que inició Emio Greco PC con HELL a través de la Divina Comedia de Dante, el compositor Michael Gordon contribuye magistralmente a la habitual exploración de la compañía sobre la relación existente entre danza y música, haciendo uso de elementos estructurales del rock. Siete bailarines se entrelazan con brillantes guitarras eléctricas. ¿Una cruz? ¿Un tercer brazo? ¿Un apéndice doloroso? Los bailarines se transforman en instrumentos. Los furiosos instrumentos se convierten en frágil carne humana. Encadenados por cuerdas musicales los bailarines buscan purificarse en una rapsodia redentora. In “[purgatorio] POPOPERA”, the continuation of the journey which Emio Greco / PC with Hell started with the Divine Comedy of Dante, composer Michael Gordon enriches the typical EG | PC research on the relationship between dance and music using structural elements from rock music. Seven dancers intertwine with gleaming black electric guitars. A cross? A third arm? A lump of suffering? Dancers mutate into instruments. Raging instruments become fragile flesh and blood sound-boards. Chained by strings a crowd of dancers seeks purification in a redeeming rhapsody. The show, which was enormously successful in the last edition of the Festival d’Avignon, blends raw unpolished musicality with fine physical virtuosity and dissolves the borders of music and dance.

“El Triciclo” es una de las primeras creaciones del dramaturgo español más representado en el mundo, el genial y controvertido Fernando Arrabal. Poesía del absurdo y surrealismo trágico para dar vida a unos personajes marginales que sobreviven dentro de un sistema capital con el que no saben comunicarse, un régimen feroz que se auto-devora sin sentimientos ni sentidos. La compañía castellano y leonesa Fabularia Teatro presenta internacionalmente esta propuesta multidisciplinar en la que confluyen diferentes artes nacidos, como los personajes, de la calle. Así, el artista plástico SUSO33 plasmará en directo emociones y sensaciones de estos personajes, mientras la música del irreverente Korazón Crudo les pondrá el alma del pensamiento, todo ello dentro de la acción dramática como un único latido estético de arte vivo de seres inocentes y crueles que se debaten entre la vida y la muerte. “The Tricycle” is one of the first creations by the most represented Spanish dramatist in the world, the genius and the controversial Fernando Arrabal. Poetry of the absurd and tragic surrealism give life to some marginal characters that live within a capital system where they don’t know how to communicate, a fierce regimen that self-devours without emotions or feelings. The company from Castile and Leon, Fabularia Teatro, presents this multidiscipline proposal internationally where different art forms are born, like the characters, on the street. Chunky Move, compañía australiana, llega a nuestro país de la mano del 5 Festival Internacional de las Artes para estrenar un espectáculo seductoramente visual, “Mortal Engine”, una composición surgida de la unión de la coreografía y dirección de Gadeon Obarzanek, la música de Ben Frost, las imágenes de Robin Fox y la ingeniería informática de Frieder Weiss. Sobre el escenario bailarines que luchan por escapar de la oscuridad, de la mortalidad e incluso de su propia sexualidad, el análisis de las relaciones personales, de la conducta del ser humano, la conexión y el aislamiento. By the hand of the 5th International Arts Festival, the Australian company Chunky Move arrives in our country to debut a seductively visual show, “Mortal Engine”, a composition emerging from the union of the choreography and direction of Gadeon Obarzanek, the music of Ben Frost, the imagery by Robin Fox and the computer engineering by Frieder Weiss. Pequeños barcos de cartón fabricados artesanalmente por los salmantinos navegarán, a través del Tormes, en un viaje inmóvil e iniciático, símbolo de unión colectiva. Al sonido de la noche se unirán en concierto campanas, percusión, tubas y fuegos artificiales creando un ritmo mágico de reencuentro y conexión con el origen: el río. Con la participación de la compañía La Salamandra (F), Llorenç Barber, Los Tambores de Teruel y el Conservatorio de Vigo. «CHESS BOXING» Un evento organizado en colaboración con la Federación de Ajedrez de Castilla y León, la Federacion de boxeo de Castilla y León Y EL ATENEO DE SALAMANCA.

“Las piezas de ajedrez forman el alfabeto que materializa los pensamientos y estos pensamientos, aunque parten de una concepción visual sobre el tablero, exprimen su belleza abstractamente como una poesía…” Marcel Duchamp. Una partida especial, nocturna, envuelta por música clásica en la que centenares de tableros invitan a los aficionados a comunicar en este juego “real”. Continuará con la primera demostración en España de “chess-boxing”, nueva modalidad deportiva que une ajedrez y boxeo, en una investigación artística y física de la agresividad. Música electrónica, videodanza y performance conjugarán arte y deporte y armonizaran la velada. En el siglo XVIII Fernando Gallego estaba pintando una parte del cielo de Salamanca. Con motivo del Año Internacional de la Astronomía, astrónomos equipados de imponentes telescopios, nos ofrecerán en la Plaza Mayor, la lectura del cielo del festival. Planetas galaxias, constelaciones…Científicos van a dialogar con actores, música electrónica y teatro de calle, para conducirnos desde el fascinante mundo del espacio a la búsqueda del planeta rosa. Con la colaboración de las compañías Des Quidams, Les Vernisseurs y la participación excepcional de ADDICTIVE TV en concierto. In the 18th century, Fernando Gallego was painting part of the Salamanca sky. With the motive of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, astronomers equipped with imposing telescopes will offer their interpretation of the night sky in the Plaza Mayor. Planets, galaxies, constellations…Scientists are going to converse with actors, electronic music and street theater, to take us from the fascinating world of space to the search for the pink planet. Voskresinnia brings us an interpretation of the Chejoy’s masterpiece “The cherry garden”. Changing values in society that has adequately grown is the theme which is still relevant today. These artists show us the tip of the iceberg while the audience is imbued on a trip through vanity, yearning and a painful loss of time.

Tras 4 años en La Casa de Las Conchas nos mudamos a una sala mítica de la ciudad, el Cvm Laude. Esta nueva disposición ha permitido al Festival realizar una programación cargada de directos en la que podremos encontrar una oferta ecléctica y heterogénea que reúne a grandes artistas nacionales e internacionales que nos harán descubrir el hip hop, soul, house, dubstep, techno, skweee, jazz, soul, funky, punk… de última generación. El Festival apuesta por los nuevos talentos emergentes de nuestra región creando un programa de teloneros que compartirán escenario con los artistas invitados, cada noche. After 4 years in the Casa de Las Conchas we are moving to a mythical hall of the city, the Cvm Laude. El boca a boca y el éxito de su proyecto paralelo chinatown le han convertido, según la revista Rockdelux, en uno de los mejores dj´s españoles del 2008. UVE was brought up listening to hip-hop, soul and acid-house and once he was conscious of everything that he could do on the turntable, he went on an adventure that has led him to participate in numerous festivals. Word of mouth and the success of his parallel Chinatown project have converted him, according to Rockdelux magazine, into one of the best Spanish DJs of 2008.

No es de extrañarse que al oírlos los asocien con el proyecto de 2 Many DJ’s dado que vienen de la misma ciudad y tienen algunos elementos similares.

Tras el aplastante éxito cosechado con la primera edición del Campeonato Beatbox Battle España en 2008, el Festival vuelve a organizar el evento, esta vez en el nuevo espacio del Festival, la sala Cvm Sonic. La noche del viernes se realizarán los filtros del Campeonato de la mano de un jurado compuesto por Beelow (Director de la Federación Internacional de Beatbox), Eklips (uno de los miembros de la popular banda francesa Le Remede) y MarkoOz (ganador del Campeonato 2008 y representante español en el Campeonato Mundial que se celebra a finales de Mayo en Berlín). Esta noche se decidirán los 8 beatboxers que pasarán a los cuartos de final y contaremos con la colaboración de Dj Uve a los platos. La noche del sábado la reservaremos para los cuartos, semi y final del II Campeonato Beatbox Battle España y tras el anuncio del ganador 2009, los jueces realizarán un showcase de beatbox y pedalera de loops. Esta noche la música correrá a cargo de la revolucionaria Turtle Power Crew. Un lugar cargado de esoterismo, donde se impartían doctrinas de ciencias ocultas. Para que todo el público pueda encontrar un espectáculo de su interés y disfrutar de una noche en este mágico recinto , la programación de la Cueva propone un resumen de las diferentes tendencias del festival: conciertos de música , música electrónica, ciclo de cine sobre Alejandro Jodorowosky, cuenta cuentos, teatro familiar, circo, performances, videocreaciones… 16 noches bajo la sombra de las estrellas siguiendo las huellas del Marques de Villena. This year the Festival, in collaboration with the Tourism Society of Salamanca, rediscover a new enclave in an emblematical part of the city: la Cueva de Salamanca. VIERNES 29 MAYO 22h30’ Michel Gasco y Norma Vila nos muestran la cultura musical Siria en su nuevo documental “aires del desierto”. Un apasionante viaje a través de Siria, de sus músicas, de su pasado y su presente. El grupo “Orontes Project” se crea en 2008 por Michel y Norma y comienzan a tocar con músicos de Homs, Siria. Su música va desde el Folk Castellano al tradicional del norte de Siria, creando un bello diálogo entre instrumentos como el oud árabe, la cítola medieval o la alboka vasca. Michel Gasco and Norma Vila show us the musical culture of Syria in their new documentary “desert air”. It is a passionate journey through Syria, through its music from past and present. The group “Orontes Project” was formed in 2008 by Michel and Norma and began to play with musicians from Homs, Syria. Their music ranges from Castilian Folk to the traditional music from the north of Syria, creating a lovely dialogue between instruments like the Arabic oud, the medieval zither and the Basque alboka.

Una oportunidad de entrar a formar parte de este mundo si todavía no lo has hecho y de profundizar en tus conocimientos si eres un aficionado de alguna de las disciplinas que proponemos.

The urban art party that the Festival organizes each year in Salamanca is already a classic in the city. During two days we will transform Anaya Square in an exclusive place, full of activities linked to urban art, creating an atmosphere of connection and interactivity among the people of Salamanca. The party combines graphic artistic creations, street dance, break, jugglers, parkour, beatbox reggae music, funk, soul, hip hop… We challenge the city to form part of the programmed activities creating free walls, bboying workshops, international art expositions and master classes from authentic graffiti and break dance geniuses. Instalaremos varios cubos en la Plaza donde Mons y su estilo Old School, LNE con su graffiti fresco y colorido y la asociación Remolino de Arte demostrarán su talento con los sprays. El cubo principal será creado por el sólido y reconocido conjunto Alto Contraste y un invitado especial: Bates (Dinamarca), un auténtico referente del Old School europeo. Pondremos a disposición del público un panel libre donde cada persona que lo desee podrá estampar su firma, su dibujo…en definitiva, su huella. We will install various cubes in the square where Mons, in an Old School style, LNE, with his fresh and colorful graffiti and the Remolino de Arte association will demonstrate talent with spray. In this edition we have tried to strengthen the programming of break, creating two championships which will take place during the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday. The first will be a 4x4 and the second will be a 2x2. The winners of both contests will both be compensated for their talent. As special guests we will have two international bboys belonging to Allmost Crew from Moscow and Ghost Crew from Finland. We will also count on the presence of Supersouthnics, Public Chaos and Mind Boggle among other bboys. Throughout the mornings and while the artists create their works of art, we will carry out workshops and master classes with our international guests.

En esta edición hemos querido intensificar la programación de break creando dos campeonatos que tendrán lugar durante las tardes del sábado y del domingo. La primera tarde será un 4x4 y la segunda un 2x2. Los ganadores de ambos concursos serán recompensados por su talento. Como invitados de lujo tendremos a dos bboys internacionales pertenecientes a la Allmost Crew de Moscú y a la Ghost Crew de Finlandia. Por supuesto contaremos con la presencia de Supersouthnics, Public Chaos y Mind Boggle entre otros bboys. Ofrece sus breaks y su dilatada experiencia como dj de batalla para los mejores campeonatos Bboy del continente. Disfrutaremos de su pericia en las semifinales y finales de los Campeonatos.

Instalación que cuestiona los tópicos existentes sobre Brasil y la identidad nacional. Esta tarea se ha llevado a cabo a través de métodos comunes de la investigación etnográfica, tales como el registro fotográfico del sujeto y grabación de entrevistas, para crear con ello retratos --que nos miran y se miran-- y voces que responden a preguntas latentes -- no visibles-- con múltiples respuestas para elaborar una sola voz representativa de los que están y de los que no están. Through various common methods of ethnographical research, like a photographic subject register and interview recordings, portraits -- which look at us and look at each other— and voices which answer latent questions –not visible—with various answers to make up one single voice, have been produced, representative of those that are present and those that are not. GALERÍA ADORA CALVO De martes a viernes de 11h00´ a 14h00´ y de 17h00´ a 20h30´ y los sábados de 11h00´ a 14h00´ y de 17h30´ a 21h00´ Experimentación con lenguajes en los que el artista SUSO33 recoge, a modo de livepainting los restos de palabras que recitan los asistentes, en una acción colectiva, dotándolas de un nuevo contexto plástico y de este modo cuestionando el papel que juegan las palabras que conforman los discursos en el conTEXTO del arte contemporáneo. Por este motivo el texto sugerido es el “Manual de buenas prácticas profesionales en las artes visuales”. In experimentation with languages through livepainting, the artist SUSU33 collects pieces of words spoken publicly by the audience. In a collective action, the artist provides them with a new artistic context which, in this way, questions the role they play forming part of speeches in the conTEXT of contemporary art. For this reason, the suggested text is the “Manual of professional good practices in visual arts”.

La ciudad a imagen del festival Este año, el Festival ha invitado al Grupo SPS, artistas emergentes Salmantinos, a plasmar su imagen dentro de la ciudad gracias a diferentes proyectos artísticos. La SPS (Sociedad Psicogeográfica de Salamanca) está formada por los artistas multidisciplinares ALS Guinaldo, Antonio Méndez y Emilio Papel. La intención de la SPS. a través de sus obras es ofrecer al espectador la posibilidad de interiorizar partes del entorno urbano de una manera distinta a la habitual; produciendo cambios en la percepción y en el estado de ánimo.

This year the Festival has invited a group of emerging artists from Salamanca to give expresion to their images throughout the city through different artistic project. The SPS Group (Psycho-geographic Society of Salamanca) is made up of the multidisciplinary artists ALS Guinaldo, Antonio Méndez and Emilio Papel. The goal of the SPS, is to offer the spectator the possibility to internalize parts of the urban landscape in a different way, through their works, producing changes in perception and in moods.

Diluidas en agua. Beth Moysés Viernes 11 Junio, 19h00’. Plaza Mayor BRASIL La performance ‘Diluidas en agua’ de Beth Moysés defiende como todos sus trabajos los derechos y sentimientos de la mujer: 20 mujeres y 20 vidas escritas en rojo sobre sus vestidos blancos, se lavan al final de la procesión en una conmovedora purificación. Una alianza que les permite olvidar su dolor y el de otras mujeres, para volver a vestirse de nuevo, pero con ropas limpias, sin sufrimiento.

The performance ‘Diluidas en agua’ (Diluted in water) by Beth Moysés defends, as does all of her work, women’s rights and feelings: 20 women and 20 lives written in red on their white dresses, which are washed at the end of the process in a moving act of purification. This alliance will allow them to forget their pain and the pain of other women, where they will able to get dressed again, but this time in clean clothes without suffering. ENLAZ@RTE En su quinta edición el festival ha intentado promover conexiones, reflexión y dialogo con colectivos de Salamanca con el fin de crear una nueva dinámica común donde el festival mire a la ciudad que lo recibe, y que esta ciudad mire a su festival. De tales encuentros han nacido un conjunto de propuestas y de acciones comunes estructurantes que favorecen un cruce de miradas sobre la creación, las problemáticas ciudadanas y la accesibilidad tanto cultural como física a los eventos y espectáculos del FIACYL.

During this fifth edition, the festival has attempted to promote connection, reflection and dialog with the different stratum of society from Salamanca with the objective of creating new common dynamics where the festival looks at the city that is hosting it and where the city looks at its festival. A group of proposals and actions have arisen from these encounters, which contain a common framework favoring attention on creation, problems of the citizens and cultural and physical accessibility to the events and shows of FIACYL.

El espacio urbano traNsformado La Universidad Popular de Salamanca “Nicolás M. Sosa” y el Festival Internacional de las Artes, conscientes de la importancia de las Artes en el desarrollo integral del alumnado, ha buscado una presencia activa del público infantil y juvenil en el Festival de este año 2009. Para ello, se llevará a cabo una Muestra de Dibujos realizados por l@s niñ@s de Salamanca, que se va a exponer en el patio de la Casa de las Conchas durante los días del Festival. También la plaza San Boal será transformada artísticamente con la ayuda de l@s niñ@s Se realiza también una Guía Didáctica de algunos de los contenidos programados por el Festival, de tal forma que docentes de determinadas materias –sobre todo Secundaria y Bachillerato- puedan beneficiarse de sus propuestas.

Urban space transformed The Popular University of Salamanca “Nicolás M. Sosa” and the International Arts Festival, aware of the importance of the arts in the comprehensive development of the student body, counts on the active presence of children and young people in the 2009 Festival. Therefore, a Sample of Drawings done by the children of Salamanca will be on exhibit in the patio of the Casa de las Conchas during the duration of the Festival. San Boal Square, will be artistically transformed with the help of children as well. A Didactic Guide will be prepared for some of the Festival’s content, in such a way that the students of certain subject materials-above all in secondary education- will be able to benefit from the proposals.

Con el ánimo de propiciar un acercamiento real y de facilitar la comprensión y disfrute de las diferentes actividades tanto en espacios abiertos como en salas de exhibición al mayor número posible de espectadores surge esta iniciativa. Las barreras arquitectónicas y espaciales existentes en el entorno constituyen obstáculos muy importantes para garantizar el acceso a los bienes culturales de las personas con discapacidad (en ocasiones mucho más que las limitaciones funcionales). El objetivo de este Plan de Accesibilidad del Festival es ofrecer todos los servicios que una persona con discapacidad física y/o sensorial pueda requerir en el acceso y disfrute de las actividades y programación del Festival.

Accessibility Plan This initiative comes about with the real intention of a bringing the largest number of people together and making the comprehension and enjoyment easier of the different activities, both in the open spaces, as well as in the exhibition halls. The architectural barriers (to handicapped access) and the existing spaces in the surrounding areas together are important obstacles for guaranteeing the access of handicapped people (including the mentally and physically disabled) to the cultural activities. The goal of the Festival’s Accessibility Plan is to offer all of the services that a mentally or physically disabled person may need in order to enjoy the activities and program of the Festival.

RADIO OASIS Radio Oasis es un proyecto de comunicación participativa que transmite una forma de ver el mundo desde la solidaridad y la igualdad, y que acerca la realidad cotidiana del barrio, de la ciudad y del mundo a la ciudadanía. Además, es un punto de encuentro de jóvenes en el que cualquiera puede tomar la palabra y en la que hacemos llegar la radio a personas y colectivos vulnerables de exclusión social. Radio Oasis is a participative communication project that will transmit the way of seeing the world, from a standpoint of solidarity and equality, which is closer to the everyday reality of the neighborhoods, of the city and of the citizens of the world. This is also a meeting point for youth where anyone can take the stand and where radio will be available to socially excluded people and defenseless stratum of society. The civil society, during these ever changing times, takes on special role in the collective search for solutions for the great challenges that we are facing. La ciudad al encuentro con las Artes Escénicas El Festival Internacional, un año más, ha desarrollado, en colaboración con la Asociación Cívitas, una amplia animación en diferentes barrios de la ciudad. Cada día, variadas representaciones se detienen en una de las cuatro zonas de la ciudad enlazando doce espacios de actuación entre parques y plazas de los barrios salmantinos. Las tardes dan paso a diversas actividades de animación infantil dentro del espacio “EmplazArte” con propuestas de espectáculos muy participativos de títeres, circo y talleres creativos. La siguiente etapa propone una cartelera rica de teatro, danza, clown, nuevo circo y de música. Además, durante las mañanas el Festival proyectará esta conexión artística en colegios e institutos. The International Festival, once again, in collaboration with the Cívitas Association, has put together an extensive program within the different neighborhoods of the city. Each day, different shows will stop in each of the four areas of the city, linking twelve spaces among the parks and squares of the neighborhoods of Salamanca. The afternoons will open to different entertainment activities for children, all within the framework of “EmplazArte” (Get closer to Art) with shows that include the participation of puppeteers, the circus and creative workshops. The next stage suggests a full line-up of theater, dance, clown, new circus and music. The mornings of the Festival will project an artistic connection in schools and high schools. An audience, made up of all ages, will be able to enjoy original shows from more than forty companies. Positive encounters to bring each of the forms of art and culture closer to awaken curiosity and to create new dreams. This program represents an invitation to discover and share in all of the proposals of the International Festival. To create a symbolic bridge between the city center and the neighborhoods promoting the existence of a unique space during the festival, regardless of geographical distinction: Salamanca.

La compañía Teatro Milagros crea un universo y una iluminación “a la altura” de este montaje realista, en miniatura, de este teatrito a escala en el que actúan tres muñecos de madera, cinco títeres y los cuatro actores que los manipulan. Esta obra ganadora del premio Fondart 2006, otorgado por el Gobierno de Chile, invita al espectador a un viaje íntimo hacia sus emociones más postergadas, al olvidado sentido de la ternura y de la sorpresa. Based on the homonymous story by the Russian writer Nicolai Gogol, El Capote spells out the minute life of the protagonist, Akakiy Akakievich, who, like many others, is an unsuccessful human being that spends his time resigned to working at his job. The Teatro Milagros Company creates a universe and lighting that is “on par with” this realist staging carried out on a miniature stage to scale, where the acting is done by three wooden dolls, five puppets and the four actors that control them. This show was the winner of the 2006 Fondart Award, awarded by the Chilean Government. Organizado por Grupo VisUsal (Diego Alonso Gómez Aguilar, Carlos Armando García Pérez, Antonio González Torres, Vadim Paz-Madrid Gorelov, Juan García Navarro) en colaboración con Dolores Blázquez, Ana Rodríguez, Katja Sonnenberg, Marleny Salas, Alba Villamil.

El proyecto surge con la intención de crear un escaparate interactivo que permita la expresión del los ciudadanos en el contexto del Festival de las Artes de Castilla y León. Esta iniciativa surgió entre estudiantes de informática y posteriormente colaboradores de otras áreas se unieron al proyecto durante el Laboratorio de Proyectos Colaborativos Interdisciplinares de la Universidad de Salamanca. This project comes about with the intention of creating an interactive showcase that allows citizens to express themselves within the framework of the Arts Festival of Castile and Leon. This initiative came from the students of computer science and later from heads of other areas that joined the project during the Laboratorio de Proyectos Colaborativos Interdisciplinares (Interdisciplinary Collaborative Projects Laboratory) of the University of Salamanca.

THE BODY AS A BATTLEFIELD

El arte como instrumento para trazar líneas de vida alejado de la sistemática científica nunca es un fin en sí mismo como pensaba Deleuze. El cuerpo, como objeto observable (que se mide, se pesa, se calcula, se manipula…) para la ciencia , constituye uno de esos reductos no sometibles a la sistematización ya que por sí mismo es un algo en constante desplazamiento, desarraigamiento o autorreconstrucción, carente del sometimiento a una naturaleza esencial. “EL GORDO DE MINNESOTA”

Art used as an instrument to draw life lines away from the scientific system is never an end in itself as Deleuze thought. The body, represented as an observable object for science (that is measured, weighed, calculated and manipulated…), represents one of those strongholds which is not subject to the systematization since, on its own, it is something in constant motion, uprooting itself and self-reconstructing, lacking the submission to an essential nature.

Suite referente (ESPAÑA) Bigas Luna director y guionista, se introduce en el cine en los 70, adquiriendo con Bilbao prestigio internacional. Actualmente dirige el espectáculo del cabaret El Plata. FRANCESCA WOOMAN. HOMENAJE (USA) Solo vivió 22 años. Su obra es impactante. Ella misma fue el tema, poniéndose frente a la cámara como quien representa un personaje. Fotógrafa y modelo, refleja su idea de sí como alguien para ser representado, haciendo de su obra un objeto teatral.

Presenta una instalación artística que prueba la complejidad del amor y la pérdida. Produciendo imágenes llamativas, sus íntimos espectáculos comienzan melancólica y tiernamente y cuestionan el aspecto social que regula el cuerpo femenino.

Presents an artistic installation which tests the complexity of love and loss. Eye-catching imagery, her shows begin intimately, in a melancholic and tender fashion. They question the social aspect that controls the female body.

Giovanni TINTO BRASS. SEGOVIA (ITALIA) (Milán, 26 de marzo de 1933) Este director italiano empezó como ayudante, entre otros, de Fellini. Dejó el cine convencional y filmó obras desconcertantes. ÁNGELES MARCO. HOMENAJE (ESPAÑA) (Valencia, 1947-2008 †) Estudió escultura en la Facultad de San Carlos y se doctoró por la Universidad de Valencia. Gran innovadora, impulsó el arte escultórico y llevó a lo más alto el arte moderno y contemporáneo por lo que en 1988 obtuvo el Premio “Alfonso Roig” MARÍA SILVESTRE MARCO (ESPAÑA) Licenciada en la Facultad (Valencia), cursó diversos estudios y realizó trabajos de investigación. Comisaria de la Exposición B.3.5 PINTURA + MEDIA (Valencia), obtuvo varios premios y fue finalista en la XXIX Bienal de Moncada en 2003. Radio Persona, el espectáculo que simula un programa de radio, lleva haciéndose con gran éxito en diferentes localidades de Salamanca y Madrid desde 1998, coordinado por Andrés Sudón y su equipo. Radio Persona nació con el propósito de mostrar de manera desenfadada, pero no por ello menos rigurosa, el movimiento artístico alternativo que se encuentra en todas la ciudades por pequeñas que sean. Tiene el formato de un programa de radio no emitido en las ondas en el que se combina una suerte de actuaciones de todo tipo: teatro, poesía, música, performances, etc., con las que queda asegurado el entretenimiento de todos los públicos. Giovanni TINTO BRASS. SEGOVIA (ITALY) (Milan, March 26, 1933) This Italian director started as the assistant to Fellini, among others. He left conventional cinema behind and filmed disconcerting works. ÁNGELES MARCO. TRIBUTE (SPAIN) (Valencia, 1947-2008 †) He studied sculpture at the San Carlos Faculty and received his Ph.D. from the University of Valencia. A great innovator, he promoted sculptural art and took it to the top of modern and contemporary art for which he received the “Alfonso Roig” Award in 1988. MARÍA SILVESTRE MARCO (SPAIN) With a degree from the University of Valencia, she has done various studies and carried out research projects. Radio Persona is a show that simulates a radio program. Since 1998, it has been successfully put on in various places in Salamanca and Madrid, coordinated by Andrés Sudón and his team. Radio Persona was created with the purpose of demonstrating in a carefree yet thorough way, the alternative artistic movement which can be found in all cities no matter what the size. The show’s format is that of a radio program that is not broadcasted, where all kinds of chance actions: theater, poetry, music, performances, etc., combine, assuring entertainment for audiences of all ages. Este año el festival tendrá una oficina móvil de información que se ubicará tanto en el centro como en diferentes barrios de la ciudad. Gracias a la colaboración con la asociación Karwan (Francia) y el Gobierno Regional 13 esta oficina móvil consistirá en un fabuloso “autobús-exposición” que presenta la “loca historia de las artes de calle”. Entrevistas a compañías que han realizado teatro de calle, instalaciones, videos, elementos expositivos creados por las compañías, permitirán al visitante descubrir en 30m2 esta historia apasionante del teatro de calle, desde sus origines hasta hoy. En el final del bus-expo un “salón VIP, el salón de los Viajeros Insatisfechos del Presente permitirá escaparse y descubrir una selección de videos sobre compañias... Mientras que las ventanas del bus-expo reenvían a la calle, como reflejo, sus propias imágenes...imaginadas”* Un conductor-guía-actor y una azafata-actriz recibirán al público para contarles mil anécdotas sobre el teatro de calle e irán proporcionándole todas las informaciones sobre el Festival Internacional This year the festival will have a mobile information office which will be located in the center as well as in different neighborhoods of the city. Thanks to the collaboration with the Karwan association (France) and the Regional Government 13, this mobile office will be a fabulous “exhibition bus” that will present “La loca historia de las artes de calle” (wild history of the arts on the street). The visitor will discover in 30m2, the fascinating story of street theater, from the very beginnings until the present day through interviews with companies that have done street theater, installations, videos and exhibition elements created by the companies. At the back of the bus-expo there will be a “VIP room, the room for the Unsatisfied Travelers of the Present which will provide escape and discovery during a collection of videos about the companies…Meanwhile the windows of the bus-expo will send back to the street, in form of a reflection, its own imagery-imagined”* A driver-guide-actor and a hostess-actress will greet the general public to tell them a thousand stories about street theater and they will provide all of the information pertinent to the International Festival.
