P REPARING FOR THE C ONSECRATION OF THE A RCHDIOCESE OF S AN F RANCISCO TO THE I MMACULATE H EART OF M ARY Part 49
ON FEBRUARY 24, JACINTA’S BODY WAS PLACED IN a leaden casket sealed in the presence of the authorities and some pious women. It was transferred to the family vault of a generous and devout man from Ourem. The Mother Superior accompanied the body and thus was able to visit the Cova da Iria, as Jacinta had prophesied. Jacinta’s father was at the train station to meet the body. “When I saw so many people around the little casket of my Jacinta, it was all so nice, I burst into tears at the sight, just like a little child. I never cried so much in all my life. ‘Nothing helped you,’ I sobbed, ‘nothing would cure you. You stayed here for two months, then you went to Lisbon…There you died alone, all alone…’” Fifteen years later, on September 12, 1935, the Bishop of Leiria commanded that Jacinta’s body be transferred to the parish cemetery in Fatima, where she was to be buried with Francisco in a grave built for two children. When Jacinta’s casket was opened, her body was still whole and incorrupt. In 1951, the body of Jacinta was transferred to the basilica of the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary of Fatima. Francisco’s body was transferred to the basilica shortly afterwards. The basilica had been constructed on the place where the apparitions occurred. The construction of the shrine at Fatima was not without obstacles and has a long and beautiful local history, with the heroic devotion of the local people at the center of the drama. The Freemasons placed two bombs at the shrine in 1922, one of which exploded, destroying the roof of the little church that had been built at the place of the appaitions. The other bomb had been placed at the holm oak where Our Lady appeared and that bomb did not explode. The little church is still there today. On May 13, 2000, Francisco and Jacinta were beatified by Pope St. John Paul II and on May 13, 2017, on the 100th anniversary of the first apparition, they were canonized by Pope Francis. We must beg them frequently to pray for us, so that we can be faithful to the daily Rosary, the offering of our everyday sufferings, and the frequent reception of the sacraments, so that we can get to Heaven. †
