Stewardship-Sharing Our Treasure with the Community

“ACCL – A COMMUNITY CARING FOR LIFE” IS THE JANUARY RECIPIENT!

The second collection in January will be used to help our local “Southwest Options for Women” (previous name – Minnetonka LifeCare Center) on Mainstreet in Hopkins. A small portion will be set aside for our ACCL Committee to provide Pro-Life Education, including future speakers, pamphlets, DVD’s, flyers, postage, etc. Parenting programs, child development classes, financial assistance and even housing are a part of what Options For Women Centers provide.

It’s not enough to say “don’t have an abortion” — we can all be a part of helping women consider the pro-life decision by letting them know about the no-cost services and life-affirming solutions available for women. The Southwest Options for Women is expanding! They will continue to support people with pregnancy testing, maternity and baby needs including formula, diapers, baby food and more! They hope to purchase an UltraSound Machine and more! Pray that all these mothers can make a fresh start, a new beginning and share a positive future with their babies. Cash, coin, and checks are welcome or give online direct from your bank account or credit card. Checks are to be made out to St. Gabriel the Archangel Church with “ACCL” written in the memo section. Visit the parish website to give online. Please be generous.

Dear Parishioners, Happy New Year, everyone. I pray that 2017 will be a year of blessings for you, your family and your parish. As Deacon Francis pointed out about a month ago, the Church year begins with the season of Advent. And so he encouraged us to make our resolutions right then, rather than waiting for the secular new year. Why not get a head start, and use our resolutions to help us prepare to celebrate Christ’s first coming at Christmas and his second coming any day now? For those who followed that advice – good for you! Keep it up! For those who didn’t, I encourage you to do so now. That might sound odd, coming from a Catholic priest – what do I care if you make a New Year’s resolution? It’s not even a religious holiday. The reason I encourage making resolutions is because it signals a desire to grow, to improve. I can say with confidence that you, reading this right now, have some room for improvement - things you need to work on. You are not yet the best possible version of yourself – you are called to something greater. But before you can grow, you need to decide that you’re going to try; you need to make a resolution. So, what bad habits can you tackle? What good habits can you develop? Even if they are not explicitly spiritual in nature (though let me put my Catholic priest hat back on: Pray daily! Fast weekly! Give to the parish!), human growth is good, and having better order in your secular life will facilitate growth in your spiritual life. In what areas of your life do you have room for improvement? May you look back at 2017 and see that you made progress in those areas. Fr. Liekhus

SMALL GROUP MEDITATION

January 1, 2017: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God Numbers 6:22-27; Psalm 67; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21

another person, can we know more fully who he or she truly is. We see the family resemblance, the emotions, the meaning between the words. From birth, babies instinctively identify and gaze upon their own mothers’ faces. God created us this way and so when he planned our salvation, he gave us his face to gaze upon, in the face of Jesus. But he did not stop there; he also gave us the face of Mary, a mother, a humble woman, to gaze upon so we would know we are loved and cared for in the unique love of a mother. When we gaze upon the face of Mary, (another meaning of gaze is “to ponder”), we see and understand more who Jesus is, how he loves us and cares for us. Mary leads us to Jesus, because she loves us and cares for us as only a mother can. For more information or to sign up for a small group contact Karen Fish at (952) 239-1949.

Why did Jesus come into the world as an infant, born of Mary? He is God, and as God he could have chosen any other way to save us. Why did he come in such an unexpected and humble way as to be born of a human woman, and a poor rural woman at that? These facts of the Incarnation are rich with meaning, so much meaning that the Church has set aside a holy day to ponder it, and our readings for this holy day are the place to start. In the first reading from Numbers, God instructs Moses how to bless the people, saying, “The Lord let his face shine upon you.” This idea is repeated in the responsorial psalm, “May God have pity on us and bless us; may he let his face Reflection Questions: shine upon us.” In the gospel reading from Luke, the  What is your devotion to Mary like?

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
