MOTHER MARIA DA PURIFICAÇÃO GODINHO KNEW that Jacinta was a very special child. She took notes of all her conversations and dealings with her during her 12 days' stay at the orphanage, from January 22February 2, 1920. She recalled that a wealthy woman approached Jacinta while she was waiting in the parlor of the orphanage. The woman told Jacinta about her eye troubles and asked her to pray for her. She gave her a two-dollar bill. Jacinta did not speak and the lady went away sad. The child gave the money immediately to the mother superior, who told her to give it to her mother. "No," Jacinta replied, "this is for you. You are having so much trouble with me." Later, the superior asked Jacinta why she did not answer the woman with eye trouble. "Look, my dear Mother, I have prayed much for her," the nine-year old girl replied. "I didn't say anything then as I was afraid I might forget it, I had so many pains." The young child had learned quickly to distinguish between love and sentimentality. Jacinta's mother remained in Lisbon only a few days, to ensure that Jacinta was in good care. Jacinta was quite happy at the orphanage. She loved the mother superior, who was a real spiritual mother to the child. She also enjoyed the company of the other children. What she loved most was that she lived in the same house as Jesus, present in the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel. She could adore the Eucharistic Jesus from a little balcony, near her bedroom and overlooking the sanctuary of the chapel. She spent every possible moment adoring Our Lord, Whom she received every morning in Holy Communion, when she had

to be carried to the altar rail. She went to a nearby church early one morning for confession. "What a nice priest," she recalled. "He was so kind. He asked me many things, so many things." During her time adoring the Blessed Sacrament, Jacinta witnessed the lack of proper reverence of visitors to the orphanage's chapel. "My dear Mother, don't allow that," she begged the superior. "They must act before the Blessed Sacrament as is proper. Everyone must be quiet in church; they must not speak. If these poor people knew what was waiting for them!" Again, Jacinta returned in her mind to the vision of Hell. The superior would then speak with the visitors, sometimes without success. Jacinta would want to know how the correction went. When told they would not listen, she encouraged the superior, her face filled with sorrow at the irreverence, "Patience. Our Lady is pleased with you. Will you tell the Cardinal? Yes? Our Lady does not want us to talk in church." It is clear that in her final days Jacinta had become something of a prophet, bearing messages from Our Lady for the whole Church. †

Jacinta estaba muy feliz en el orfanato. Ella amaba a la madre superiora, que era una verdadera madre espiritual para la niña. Ella también disfrutó de la compañía de los otros niños. Lo que más amaba era que vivía en la misma casa que Jesús, presente en el Santísimo Sacramento en la capilla. Ella podía adorar a Jesús Eucarístico desde un pequeño balcón, cerca de su dormitorio y con vistas al santuario de la capilla.
