This weekend we welcome the visit of Fr. Jesu Amal Raj, MOP who will preach at each of the Masses to impart upon our congregation the works of his brotherhood, Missionaries of the Poor based in Kingston, Jamaica.



The Missionaries of the Poor was founded on July 19, 1981 by Fr. Father Richard Ho Lung who had been associate pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Papine, Jamaica. Missionaries of the Poor become the first male Catholic religious institute founded in the Caribbean to receive Vatican approval on March 25, 1998. 



The spiritual focus of the Missionaries of the Poor is to fulfill Christ’s desire to be present in this world, to have Him use the brothers within His Mystical Body in order to accomplish His life and work among the poor. They do this through: 

 A life of prayer which makes them aware of God’s special love, His special favor and plan for each of them;  A life of love of the members in their religious community,  A life of service of the poor;  A life of loyalty and dedicated service in the building up of our Roman Catholic Church. 

One of the central objectives of the Missionaries of the Poor is the building of a sense of community among the poor. The poor are gathered together as a family and relationships are forged with the wider society. However, this depends upon the building a community of men±religious Brothers and priests± who live in community, share all things in common, follow a common spirituality and charism with a common ministry of service to the least in society. There are four central aspects of this community: Prayer, Community, Apostolate and Study. 

Prayer: The daily life of the Brothers revolves around a life of prayer, beginning at 5:45am and ending with night prayer at 9:00pm. The annual prayer schedule of the community also consists of a monthly day of recollection, 3day retreats thrice per year and one 8day retreat. The members also make a 40 day retreat in their novitiate and every 6 years after profession.



Community: Led by Father Ho Lung, the Brothers and priests of this religious community, coming from as many as 13 countries (as diverse as West Indies, Central America, North America, Africa, India and the Philippines) unite as one brotherhood in Christ. Living a materially simply and austere life, they own nothing personally, hold no personal bank accounts, do not watch TV or listen to radio, and do not drink alcoholic beverages or smoke. They sleep on bunk beds in dormitories, pray, eat, recreate, study, work and travel in community. The Brothers live a partly monastic life in cloister, but graciously welcome visitors to their monasteries and ministries.

addition to the three vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, the Missionaries of the Poor take a fourth vow of free service to the least of our brothers and sisters. Through this vow of freeservice to the least, none of the Brothers received any salary or payment for his services and neither the community nor the individual charges for its services to the poor and needy.



These services include handson care of the destitute homeless, orphans, elderly and sick in our care centers, where we provide food and drink, clothing, shelter, basic medical care. In addition to these works of mercy, we provide spiritual care that includes catechesis, bible study, music, worship and song worship, devotion to the Eucharist, to the Blessed Mother and other liturgies. 

The Institute also provides spiritual care to our Lay Associates, which includes counseling, retreats, music and song worship, seminars and bible study. Many come from overseas to partake in the community’s prayer and works among the poor for a pilgrimage/retreat experience. This service is given in return for our Lay Associates’ support for the community.



Study: In the Missionaries of the Poor’s Institute of Learning, Brothers receive the spiritual, theological and practical training needed for their life and work. Courses are equivalent to any Catholic seminary program and include biblical studies, theology, MOP spirituality, ecclesiology, homiletics and seminars as well as practical studies that include music, nursing, gardening and building. Of course this study is not limited to the time in the classroom. The Brothers are constantly studying and growing both spiritually and intellectually through the participation in every aspect of community life with time set aside daily for meditation.

Desarrollar relaciones saludables con los demás requiere disciplina. Esto también es verdad en nuestra relación con Dios. Como cristianos, estamos llamados a ser como Cristo. Esto no sucede solo al azar o cuando es conveniente para nosotros. Sucede cuando pasamos tiempo con Cristo todos los días y nos esforzamos por ser y pensar como Él. Esto no es una tarea fácil. Implica estar dispuesto a ver las cosas, las personas y a Dios de manera diferente. Abandonando nuestros deseos y necesidades auto centradas y poniéndose a Cristo, es una disciplina desafiante por seguir. Sin embargo, si elegimos entrar por la puerta angosta del discipulado, encontraremos paz, viviremos vidas virtuosas y entenderemos lo que significa ser salvo. Descansar y estar acunado en el regazo de Dios y disfrutar de su presencia es donde realmente deseamos estar, aunque tengamos que renunciar a algunas cosas para poder lograrlo.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡buenos días! Después de haber pasado revista a las diversas figuras de la vida familiar ²madre, padre, hijos, hermanos, abuelos², quisiera concluir este primer grupo de catequesis sobre la familia hablando de los niños. Lo haré en dos momentos: hoy me centraré en el gran don que son los niños para la humanidad ²es verdad, son un gran don para la humanidad, pero son también los grandes excluidos porque ni siquiera les dejan nacer² y próximamente me detendré en algunas heridas que lamentablemente hacen mal a la infancia. Me vienen a la mente muchos niños con los que me he encontrado durante mi último viaje a Asia: llenos de vida y entusiasmo, y, por otra parte, veo que en el mundo muchos de ellos viven en condiciones no dignas… En efecto, del modo en el que son tratados los niños se puede juzgar a la sociedad, pero no sólo moralmente, también sociológicamente, si se trata de una sociedad libre o una sociedad esclava de intereses internacionales. En primer lugar, los niños nos recuerdan que todos, en los primeros años de vida, hemos sido totalmente dependientes de los cuidados y de la benevolencia de los demás. Y el Hijo de Dios no se ahorró este paso. Es el misterio que contemplamos cada año en Navidad. El belén es el icono que nos comunica esta realidad del modo más sencillo y directo. Pero es curioso: Dios no tiene dificultad para hacerse entender por los niños, y los niños no tienen problemas para comprender a Dios. No por casualidad en el Evangelio hay algunas palabras muy bonitas y fuertes de Jesús sobre los “pequeños”. Este término “pequeños” se refiere a todas las personas que dependen de la ayuda de los demás, y en especial a los niños. Por ejemplo, Jesús dice: «Te doy gracias, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque has escondido estas cosas a los sabios y entendidos, y se las has revelado a los pequeños» (Mt 11, 35 25). Y dice también: «Cuidado con despreciar a uno de estos pequeños, porque os digo que sus ángeles están viendo siempre en los cielos el rostro de mi Padre celestial» (Mt 18, 10). Por lo tanto, los niños son en sí mismos una riqueza para la humanidad y también para la Iglesia, porque nos remiten constantemente a la condición necesaria para entrar en el reino de Dios: la de no considerarnos autosuficientes, sino necesitados de ayuda, amor y perdón. Y todos necesitamos ayuda, amor y perdón. Los niños nos recuerdan otra cosa hermosa, nos recuerdan que somos siempre hijos: incluso cuando se llega a la edad de adulto, o anciano, también si se convierte en padre, si ocupa un sitio de responsabilidad, por debajo de todo esto permanece la identidad de hijo. Todos somos hijos. Y esto nos reconduce siempre al hecho de que la vida no nos la hemos dado nosotros mismos, sino que la hemos recibido. El gran don de la vida es el primer regalo que nos ha sido dado. A veces corremos el riesgo de vivir olvidándonos de esto, como si fuésemos nosotros los dueños de nuestra existencia y, en cambio, somos radicalmente dependientes. En realidad, es motivo de gran alegría sentir que, en cada edad de la vida, en cada situación, en cada condición social, somos y permanecemos hijos. Este es el principal mensaje que nos dan los niños con su presencia misma: sólo con ella nos recuerdan que todos nosotros y cada uno de nosotros somos hijos. Y son numerosos los dones, muchas las riquezas que los niños traen a la humanidad. Recordaré sólo algunos. Portan su modo de ver la realidad, con una mirada confiada y pura. El niño tiene una confianza espontánea en el papá y en la mamá; y tiene una confianza natural en Dios, en Jesús, en la Virgen. Al mismo tiempo, su mirada interior es pura, aún no está contaminada por la malicia, la doblez, las “incrustaciones” de la vida que endurecen el corazón.
